Wii to cost $640-$690 in Brazil

That's new to me... Do you know why the name change?

No idea. I was caught by surprise, too -- whenever I contacted them to know who was in charge, it was still the same guy :)

And by "importing" you mean "stashing the console and its accessories under your clothing". :)

Jokes aside, I think I'm gonna import mine the good, lawful way. :P

Well, my Xbox was bought that way, probably the guy that brought it from Paraguay has a Neo-like coat to stash it. :lol

But with the Wii, I think I will ask to my cousin who lives in Miami to send one to me, as gift. :)

He could put it as a backpack, pulling a Hunchback of Notre Dame look too. :lol

Hahaha... but the worst is that this is really true, I saw many times on tv the "sacoleiros" bringing a lot of stuff on that way. :lol

But buying things from Paraguay is not as cheaper as once was... direct importing from the US is actually the cheapest way.

I'm waiting to see how much will cost the Xbox 360 that Microsoft Brasil will release... it will be a shock, in a negative way. :P

Jesus Christ! Latamel is not Nintendo Brasil. People should know better, specially kids from "the press".

Latamel are importers, just like any other store that decides to bring consoles to the country through the most common import procedures. They don't have any advantage over anyone, person of company, that wants to import a piece of hardware to Brazil.

Wii will cost the US price + 60% import taxes + 40% extra (state) taxes + shipping in Brazil. That's the "official" price.

If it serves as a parameter, a manager from Microsoft Brasil told me (this is old news, when they didn't announce their plans to release the Xbox 360 down here) and the folks from UOL Jogos that they couldn't release it for less than R$ 4.200,00 with all taxes, handling and profits included.

I'm fairly sure they have a decent backup plan to sell it cheaper than that when they release it, or else they'll bomb for sure.

Um, I fail to detect where Latamel was defined as "Nintendo Brasil". Anyway...

Yeah, I remember that, but they must know that there's no way to release here a videogame console for under R$ 3.000, it will not sell.

A price on the R$ 1.500 - R$ 2.000 line, while still costly, will be more on our reality, and if they advertise heavily the system running on plasma and lcd tv's on great mass electronic stores, it surelly will sell a lot to the people who bought this type of tv to see the World Cup and now are looking for other ways to justify the aquisition. ;)

And I fail to understand the importance of this thread, considering no one is talking about an official Nintendo launch, but just a commentary from one among dozens of other companies that plan to bring Wii to Brazil.

The word "launch" itself is being misused in the reports and in this thread.

I'm just trying to make things clear as people who are not familiar with the latam market might think Nintendo is ripping off their customers in Brazil.

You're right. But if Nintendo themselves (or a 3rd party company like Gradiente) even assembled it here, it would still be about the same price because the parts would still have to be imported, and they would be taxed each one individually. See: Tectoy/Sega. But at least they pressed theirs CDs/GD-ROMs and printed Portuguese manuals.
I hope that new flextronics plant in SĂŁo Paulo changes things a bit someday :(

I doubt it.
You doubt it would be the same price? Even simply assembling it here would more expensive than in China, since our taxes are so absurdly high and we don't pay $1/month wages :lol

Ehm, that makes no sense.

GC launched at 999 reais (at the time 333 dollars)

To add to this, GC was launched in September 2002 by Gradiente, PAL consoles that ran US games. It was assembled in Manaus and launched with Luigis Mansion, NBA Courtside, Wave Race and Eternal Darkness. English game, portuguese manual/box. Games were 279 reais. (almost 100 US)

Actually, according to several sites which talked about Latamel, that isn't exactly true, they seem to be considered the Nintendo representative in Brazil. Importing Nintendo products is their main activity, but it's not their only one...

Wealth-wise, what's it like? From what I've heard there is a MASSIVE disparity in income...

And to keep this on topic, I hope this means Nintendo is gonna add Master System capabilities to the VC :D

Key word is importing though. Unlike Gradiente, the old official distributer, who set up a factory in the country as to pay lower prices.

Being official only means its harder for them to evade taxes.

Just a heads up: Latamel IS Nintendo's main representative in Brazil. "One among dozens of other companies" is very misleading -- warranty, events representing the company here, all of these are handled by Latamel.

Apart from that, I've no corrections regarding what you said before. Latamel is NOT Nintendo Brasil. If other companies decide to import it directly to sell it around here, no problem... but Latamel IS their main business representative down here.

He, my dad is going to US in october... So, I don´t have to worry about it.

Still, I don´t know how true is this, but videogames are VERY expensive here.

Em sua volta oficial ao mercado nacional, a Nintendo anunciou nesta sexta-feira (04/08) que pretende trazer o Wii, novo console da marca, ao país até o final do ano.

WTF! See, that's the kind of message people are getting from this bs about "Nintendo in Brazil". Nintendo is not back. Latamel is not back, since it's been in Brazil for what... 4 years without notice?

Latamel is the official importer, just like NC Games is the official Konami in Brazil. The support or any aggregate value to justify their "official" presence in Brazil is close to zero though.

WHO WANTS TO MAKE A NEW THREAD GUYS

http://wii.ign.com/articles/723/723894p1.html

A number of big-name publishers are set to release their Wii games in mid-to-late October, which suggests that a system debut could not be that far off. And several insiders have told IGN that Tuesday, November 2 could, in fact, be the big day.

Thing is, not all of our contacts are in agreement on the date. Some have suggested that November 12 could, instead, by Wii's launch date. Regardless, though, it seems that Wii fans can look forward to their console sooner rather than later.

Sources suggest that Wii will launch with a $229 price tag and will be available in both black and white.

Who wants an ever better example of how everything game-related is over priced here?

FFX-2. 145 bucks. That's around, what, ~70 US dollars?

SEVENTY DOLLARS. FOR FFX-2.

Gaf should start a "Help Brazil Stop Sucking" program or something. We'd appreciate it. :(

I know this is election year. but I think -- in the purest of intentions -- that we should try to make ourselves heard regarding a change in game consoles legislation. This is the kind of thing that stumps Brazil's game development scene, which has very talented people with their potential smothered by a lack of a fully acknowledged VG culture.

Why do PC games get reasonable prices but not consoles?

Until recently, it was cheaper to buy a new PC game in Brasil than in the US (when the real was 1:3). EA brings all their big titles completely translated

Just as I expected: the article looks just a press release with some optional commentary by the journalist in question.

Because PC games are manufactured here -- namely, in Manaus -- and that doesn't happen for consoles for several reasons. In Nintendo's case, it's even more complicated: the manufacturing process is too big a investment to let every other country have it... doubly so if Nintendo themselves are not officially in the territory.

I daresay it's impossible. Hell, one of them congressman wanted all foreign movies to be subtitled because he couldn't follow the plot of the Da Vinci Code or some shit BECAUSE THE SUBTITLES WERE MOVING TOO QUICKLY OMG STOP THE WORLD

I shit you not, Gaf. Our president quit school after the 4th grade or something. Yay, Brazil.

This is what the dumbass who wants every movie to be dubbed had to say:

- Dubbed movies will help spread our national language, and subtitles make that harder.
- He had watched The Da Vinci Code, but couldn't keep up with the plot because the subtitles were too quick, and so he couldn't read all of them.
- Only people who have a good grasp of English are in favour of subbed movies.
- Whoever likes movies with their original audio can still enjoy it ON DVD.
- In Brasilia, in a room with 100 people, only 3 can follow the subtitles perfectly.

Yay, Brazil. I want out, Gaf. Seriously, I want out.
