Wii to Wii U (VC, WiiWare, Mii) transfer details

http://gimmegimmegames.com/2012/09/...-wii-u-to-transfer-datagames-between-systems/

Thank you for writing. I can confirm that you will be able to transfer your content from your Wii to the new Wii U. Wii U owners can wirelessly transfer content such as Miis, and WiiWare and Virtual Console games to their Wii U systems. Both systems will need to be connected to the Internet and the Wii U will need an SD card to facilitate the transfer. The process is very similar to transferring content from Nintendo DS to Nintendo 3DS or from Nintendo 3DS to Nintendo 3DS XL; which has been received positively by consumers. Transferred Wii content is accessible and can be played through Wii Mode, an application on the Wii U’s main menu. For updated information please keep checking our website at:

Probably needs a firmware update too.

- Wii Virtual Console Titles Not Playable on GamePad - http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31715

Wii, WiiWare, and Virtual Console games will be supported on Wii U much the same way that GameCube titles were supported on Wii, without any special features or GamePad support.

In an interview with Nintendo of America, they stated that the Virtual Console transfer process was not confirmed to be available at launch, and would require both systems to be present and an SD card. The transfer process works much in the same way the DSi to 3DS process works today.

Transferred content will be played through Wii Mode, available from the home screen

Ech... just makes me think they're going to be super lazy with the emulation and we won't be able to use OS features/play on the WiiPad.

Eh wait, Wii mode? So the content is simply not baked into the Wii U interface? It just starts emulating a Wii? Sounds super lazy. Well, it's Nintendo.

So still no account solution???

Fuck.

Maybe, just needed for the Wii to WiiU transfer, then stuff gets added to your account???

Yeah, the wording on that is very worrying for the prospect of VC games on the Gamepad.

edit: I also don't understand how it's "very similar" to DS to 3DS transfer when "an SD card is required" to do it and the latter was just done via wifi.

edit: Also disappointing that we can't just transfer by somehow registering content to the new account system. Needing to have both my Wii and Wii U hooked up and connected to the 'net to move my games over sounds pretty cumbersome.

Thank god. Just finally bought a bunch of Virtual Console games and I know I'm not even going to get to half of them before the Wii U comes out and the Wii gets shoved in the closet.

Happy to hear more details on this. My Wii's SD card slot stopped working a while ago so I was worried about transferring my games. Good to hear it's done wirelessly. I may be out of luck on my saved games though. At least I'll still have the games.

Wii mode? So future VC/Wiiware from that point will be playable natively, but the old ones need to be launched from Wii mode. I don't really like that

Will I be able to transfer from two Wiis?

This is important. One Wii has all my VC stuff, the other has all my game saves :(

Jeez, really? I was just thinking about playing Majora's Mask on the gamepad and how awesome it would be. Maybe it's just a temporary solution.

That's a shame. VC compatibility with the WiiPad would have been a potential killer app.

Oh it's not confirmed, it just sounds to me like it's the case. Lazy emulation is no stranger to Nintendo, with the DS games they really phoned it in. Can't use the Game Notes/Browser, which sucks.

I don't really want to lose my games on the wii since I love having it as my retro console. I probably won't transfer if there isn't any real benefit.

Will your games still be playable on your Wii after you transfer?

Nope deleted if the 3DS transfer is the model.

It's to prevent Wii stuff from opening exploits in the Wii U, I believe. I would think they'd create new Wii U releases of VC stuff for new purchases.

There's no reason why a Wii-mode would not use the gamepad especially given it has it's own sensor bar and plays Wii games at native res. I guess if they were really lazy and didn't do input emulation you could sit it on the stand.

Also, my guess is that VC content will be updated over time. I was expecting as much.

There HAS to be a better way. I assume they are gonna keep the WiiWare/VC stuff on the new Eshop, why can't they match licences or something?

Will the ambassador status transfer too? I mean, I have all the Nintendo's NES games for free, that will be the same on the Wii U?

This leads me to believe that in order to have anything running on the gamepad, its codework needs to be edited to include support for it, and that it's not a system-wide "thing" by default.

I think we should wait for the transcript of that interview before jumping to conclusions

I think the VC games will have no gamepad support in that they will show nothing on the gamepad screen when played on the TV (makes sense), but I believe that they will probably be playable in Gamepad-only mode, using the pad as a TV screen.

yeah as expected if the Wii games where able to stream to the GamePad it would have been a major bulletpoint in talks but they ignored to raise that point this long so guess its not happening

that being said no reason for me to trainsfer Wiiware to this I'll only buy VC I can stream

WHY DO I NEED TO ENTER WII MODE TO PLAY EMULATED VERSIONS OF OLD CONSOLES.

GET A GRIP, NINTENDO.

Does this confirm that VC titles won't have their own WiiU emulator... and therefore won't be on the WiiU eShop?

Well, that sucks. Major buzzkills going on in this thread.
