Wii U Ethernet Adapter

Was this an issue on the Wii as well? I'm tempted to test this since I never both to with the Wii. I Also wonder if swapping USB slots for the adapter on the Wii U would help.

Maybe the browser is bad and in other modes (like playing online) the RJ45 adapter is faster and with less ping that the wifi connection....

Using the Nyko Wii adapter, and its been working fine so far.

EDIT: Of course I havent had an accurate way to test, but Miiverse and other apps seem to load faster than when i had it connected via wi-fi. So without testing, a normal wi-fi connection would actually be better than using the Nyko USB ethernet adapter?

horrible site to test it at. It is not accurate. I did test it at home and my job and compared it to others site. It is off by a lot.

Again, for the 100th time, you need to do comparable tests. It's clearly showing that there is a slower difference with Ethernet over WiFi. While it's not an accurate measurement of what your actual speed might be, it is a clear indicator that Ethernet is slower. Don't compare it to other sites, use everything to compare within that site.

Use the site posted in this thread to compare your WiFi connection to Ethernet. Every case indicates Ethernet is drastically slower.

It doesn't have an ethernet port?

(not trolling, I swear)

Nope, focused on wi-fi but can use a USB adapter.

But yeah if thats the case, its going right back to Amazon.

Yup, even if its not accurate, it does show a clear difference for me that my Wi-Fi connection is faster than using the USB ethernet adapter.

Of course my internet isnt all that awesome in the first place, but it gets the job done.

WiiU bandwidthplace test:

Wired USB
Download: 2.56 Mbps
Upload 0.89 Mbps

Wireless
Download 2.72 Mbps
Upload: 0.89 Mbps

Wireless might be faster with the Wii U, but your results don't show conclusive evidence at all. Such a minuscule bandwidth difference is well within normal measuring inaccuracy for speed testing sites. With other people here achieving higher speeds through the Ethernet adapter than you are, I doesn't seem like your connection is throttled by it.

Regarding bandwithplace.com: An inaccurate test will often deliver varying results, that's why this site can't be trusted in any way. I've tried multiple servers, and most seem to max out at around 1 Mbps and lower - I have a 100 Mpbs/10 Mbps connection, speedtest.net measures it accurately.

im having a heap of issues with my wifi network due to me living next door to a uni dorm so there are about 30 or so wireless networks running in the area at anytime and its pot luck my wii u connects to my network...my mates ds has never connected to his router for the same reason nintendos consoles must have some crappy wifi cards that get interference really easily

Why didn't they just include a bloody Ethernet port on the console

will order one of these usb things so hopefully i get some reliable online

I guess the real test will come down to when i'm playing online. Honestly not sure what to do at this point aside from just testing it out with an online game. Just sitting down with Sonic Racing today, so we'll see.

After reading this thread, I've decided to just avoid the ethernet adapter and see if this ever gets adjusted before I go that route. Connections are slow as it is, so I don't see the point in getting something that makes things slower. Thanks for the responses, guys. Was really helpful.

Bought a USB Ethernet adapter off eBay and I'm having trouble using it.

I choose wired connection, hit ok, then it says connect the adapter to one of the USB ports which I do. I hit ok then it goes back to the Internet connection setup screen.

Make sure you have everything connected before turning the system on. If it keeps going back without attempting to connect, you may have gotten a defective adapter.

Yep, that's how I started everything first with everything connected

It's showing up on the first port of my modem where it's connected. Don't think it's defective.

Edit. It may be defective, it's not lighting up on the port on modem (got confused with another connection) and I tried using it on my MacBook and nothing showed up as well (showing that no Ethernet connection and the port isn't lighting up)

And I guess you tried both USB ports? If it is a third-party adapter, it may show up on the modem since it is getting power from the USB port, but it may not be compatible with the Wii U for whatever reason. Did the seller advertise it for the Wii or the Wii U? I know they should be the same, but there is always the chance something could have changed with the Wii U to make certain adapters incompatible. :(

I may have to move in a few months so looking to see if the issues with the ethernet through USB speed have changed but it seems people are still reporting slow than Wi-Fi

smh

Mega super bummer the ethernet adapter kills speeds...ever since I started connecting my ethernet cord to my consoles...everything is so much smoother.

Didn't know there was an official one

Any USB ethernet adaptor will do... particularly the Wii one

I don't think that's particularly true. It has to be a Wii-compatible Ethernet adapter. Any old Ethernet adapter shouldn't work.

I never tried or seen one, but Giantbomb folks tried using one they were using on a MacAir and the WiiU didn't even recognize it. Then they found a Wii one and it started working, even without power cycling the console.

I'm really interested in knowing if you can plug one of those on the Wii Mini that's coming out and give it Internet Access back.

It's still very possible the way the console manages USB could be responsible for this though.

Anyway, this is all a bit baffling from a consumer standpoint considering one would want Ethernet for higher and more reliable speeds.

That's a possibility: The Gamecube Broadband adapter was a 10/100mbit piece of hardware, but the port didn't have enough bandwidth to transfer at 100mbit/sec.

On the other hand, you're supposed to plug hard drives on the Wii U through those USB ports, so I don't see how that's a possibility.

But then again, we're talking Nintendo here.

i just got the official nintendo adapter and occasionally it just stops being recognized. What i mean is that, randomly, i wont be connected to the internet, and when I go do a connection test it'll say something like "cannot find your adapter, please make sure it's connected to your console" (dont remember the exact wording). I have to go to the console and unplug it then plug it back in, and voila', internet.

Anyone have this issue?

Did a little research into why it seems the average speeds people report from a website like bandwidthplace.com on the Wii-U browser seems to be always under 3Mbps...has something to do with the nature of using HTML5 in this webbrowser to do the test... it is not fully compatible and how it gets its speed results is not accurate with the method it transmits the information.

http://html5speedtest.me/about/

I've tested these HTML5 based speed test sites, even on my computer and they all turn up basically the same as if I tested it on the Wii-U browser, all under 3Mbps on average when I know my connection is way way faster than that

Something to keep in mind when doing your tests

I got 10mbps through WiFi on the site I've been using.

10Mbps through your computer or Wii-U browser?

And like the website says, through that testing method, it is not really accurate for people who have much faster connections

I just knew something was way off when it said my upload speed was twice as fast as my plan's allowance

Through my Wii U browser. I got 1.5 to 2mbps through Ethernet on the Wii U and 10mbps with WiFi on the Wii U.

I am not saying it's not possible to get higher Mbps readings on those sites, but the method to measure it via the browser and HTML5, you will never get an accurate reading. Until Nintendo creates a bandwidth reading app or some program that tell us, we simply won't know.

Given the fact I can load 1080p youtube video off the wii-u browser as fast as my iPad 3, whose average scores are over 20Mbps (which probably isn't accurate either), I'd say it reporting 2+ Mbps on average is obviously erroneous.

Ya, I'm not saying it gives the accuracy of the speed, but shouldn't it at least be an indicator of which one is faster when you compare the two?

I tried the test again since the thread has popped back up. Ran the test on each device multiple times and took the average results.

PC: 23 Mbps
Wii U Wireless: 11.3 Mbps
Wii U LAN: 5.6 Mbps

Even if the site is wrong or is testing improperly because of the Wii U browser, shouldn't the LAN and Wireless speeds be wrong together?

802.11n real world speeds are 2-3 times faster than 100 Mbps Ethernet. Unless there's a Gigabit Ethernet USB adapter that's compatible with Wii U, you won't get better speeds than WiFi (you won't get 1 Gb/s over USB 2.0, but it will still be much faster).

Of course, you will still get other benefits from Ethernet, but it depends on the wireless interference where you live.

But we're not dealing with data transfer rates over a LAN. The bottleneck will still be your ISP connection. So it shouldn't matter what either max theoretical or even realistic world speed is when in most cases, your Internet speed will be less than that.

Has anyone ever tried to find out exactly what adapters or NIC chipsets the Wii and Wii U are compatible with? Does it require some Nintendo-mandated custom thing, or is it just a particular class of Realtek NICs or something?

Not an expert on Wireless N, but aren't your real world speeds dependent on the antenna configuration of your router? That is, if you buy a top end router and have good (multiple?) antennas on the other end, maybe you will see those kinds of speeds?

All I know is that my cable modem (with integrated router and WiFi, which doesn't seem to be easily disabled) doesn't seem to be able to give me a WiFi connection that can handle all the bandwidth of my net connection (50mbps) on most of my devices. I am trying to think about how to get a long ass Ethernet cable upstairs without my wife killing me :p

Real world USB 2.0 speeds are 20-30MB/s

N300 is 300Mb/s (or realistically about 25-30MB/s, remember upper case and lower case B's are important)

Even if you got a gigabit USB connector, you'd still be limited to the USB 2.0 transfer speeds, assuming that Nintendo's USB ports are even fully up to 2.0 spec, which may not be given the transfer speed results.

Question, has anyone taken the Wii USB adapters, plugged them to their PC and tested the speeds via them instead? This would give us a better idea whether it's a limitation of the ethernet adapters or a general USB/Wii U issue.

Crap. I was all set to get a Wii U then I, thankfully, discover that it doesn't have an ethernet port?! It might sound a minor reason but I'm quite a distance from the router so the speed would probably be tripe (it is through my PS3, at least).

Not sure what to do now. Wanted to play online and access the E-Shop etc.

Are there any reliable LAN adapter's here in the UK you can buy?

Edit: Have found the official one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BERB8B8/ Anybody have any experience?

i bought this one:

my wii u wouldn't stream hd video from youtube when i first bought it but after the last update, it does.
