Wii U Experience Atlanta Impressions

Nintendo Land – When I first came in, I walked up to the empty Nintendo Land demo in the middle of the room, picked up the controller and I was about to play the Zelda game, then some Nintendo girl showed up, took my controller and said we were going to play Luigi’s Ghost Mansion. “B-b-b-but I want to play the Zelda game...” Then I left. I did not pay any attention to Nintendo Land for the rest of the event.

Zombi U multiplayer in the stink room - I played this for about 2 minutes, but I'm not interested in Zombi U. I really just wanted to fondle the Pro controller. So, in Zombi U, you have to hold the L trigger to aim your gun and then press the R trigger to shoot it. Major turn off. I guess they're not going for the whole "FPS that controls like every other FPS" thing. They also had the aim set to "normal" or non-inverted. So I spent most of the time looking at the floor. Then I passed the controller to some kid who looked about 10 years old. Oops.

Pro Controller - OK, so this thing might look like a 360 controller, but it doesn't really feel like one. I thought it was a bit lighter and it wasn't as curvy and bulbous as the 360 controller. The controller looks and feels much more like a Classic Controller Pro than anything else. The shoulder buttons, the sticks, the d-pad, ect, it's all CC Pro. The left stick and face button placement did feel kind of weird at first, but I think it'll just take a little getting used to and it'll feel fine. They felt better than when holding the Wii GamePad. I held it as if I was playing a SNES game and it felt fine. The buttons are in a good position for Virtual Console games and stuff. I also tried pressing in the sticks and they had a nice click to them, so they were alright.

Wii U system - It looked really long. This thing is like a Wii and half long. I found that kind of weird. Notice in this picture how the back of it was covered. That's not where it stops. It keeps going all the way back.

Wii U GamePad - I only used it for NSMB U multiplayer, Ninja Gaiden 3, and Project P-100. In Mario, I used it to put blocks on the screen and hit enemies. It felt fine holding it with 1 hand while I used the stylus on the screen. It was actually a bit heavier than I expected. It's a little bit heavier than a CC Pro. You can kind of feel where the battery or rumble pack is or something. I thought the button and right stick placement was a little disorienting while playing P-100. I had to look at it to make sure I was pressing B and not A and stuff. I like the Shoulder button placement quite a bit. I thought it felt good enough to have fingers on all the shoulder buttons at once. I think the thing is just going to take me a while to get used to and then it'll feel really good. It's going to feel weird at first though.

Project P-100 – I got like 3 minutes to play at the very end of the event and I had no fucking clue what was going on. I wanted to leave feeling like, “Fuck yeah! P-100 is badass!”, but I left feeling more like I need to play some more to be convinced.
VDlwG.jpg

Rayman Legends – I did not play it, but god damn it looks pretty.

Ninja Gaiden 3 - I've never played the PS3/360 version, but I did play NG2. This felt a lot like Ninja Gaiden 2 and it was hard as fuck. There were no QTEs in sight. The GamePad screen shows your combos on it and you can use it to pick your weapons and ninpo. The Nintendo dude really played up the dismemberment for some reason. Maybe I looked kind of bloodthirsty to him. The demo was the same desert area in many E3 videos.

Wii Fit U – Did not play it. Had a loud Nintendo dude by it. There’s a really crisp looking Wuhu Island with the same polycount as always in it.

New Super Mario Bros U – The graphics looked better than in any other NSMB and the game looks like it’s going to turn out great, but I really didn’t like how they were only letting people play it in multiplayer. I really don’t like NSMB multiplayer. One time I played with a sideways Wiimote while the Nintendo dude yelled at me to GO GO GO!! Don’t pick up coins, GO! Don’t hit blocks, GO!! I guess he was doing some kind of contest. I just wanted to play the damn game. I finished the level with 340 on the clock. Whatever. Then I played with the GamePad, putting blocks down and hitting the enemies for other people. I didn’t find it fun at all, but I’m sure little kids will love it.

Pikmin 3
– Definitely the best game at the event. I played with the Wiimote and nunchuck and it felt great. It felt natural and it worked. I played a stage where I had to get fruit and carry it back to the ship. It was really easy, but it showed off what the game is all about really well. In the level, I found Pikmin standing around and called them with my whistle, broke some mud walls down, killed some enemies, and built a bridge out of stones. I also encountered the rock Pikmin which you could throw at stuff like glass and break it. I guess they also hit harder when you throw them at enemies. I was really impressed with Pikmin 3 and if I had to only get one game for the Wii U launch, it would definitely be Pikmin 3.

I saw a double rainbow on my way there. What does it mean?

I'm going on Saturday. Do they care if I film stuff, or is it pictures only?

And how many StreetPasses did you get? :P

EDIT: And how is it set up? Like, you wait in line for a demo and get a certain amount of time, or is it just wandering around a big room from with units all over the place?

When I played P-100 I beat the whole demo in 7 minutes :D

So gooood.

Also contrary to your reaction, I actually thought the WiiPad was surprisingly light. Reaaaaally lightweight.

I went to the Chicago one. They didn't allow filming in the small room demos (like ZombiU Multiplayer), but I was able to moderately take pictures and a small amount of video in the normal floor area.

Fuck yes!

The Nintendo Land bit is hilarious.

Also, I didn't know there was a Wii Sport U. Are you sure that wasn't Panorama?

no no no no no

you're supposed to place blocks around the other players, to impede their path, and make them run into things.

Nice write-up and impressions, even has pics. Can you not fire from the hip in ZombiU? Is that what you were saying about having to hold L

I saw a lot of people taking video with their phones so I guess that's cool. I even saw a dude running around with handheld camera.

I got 17 streetpasses and I finished my OOT and SF64 puzzles and finally got a Rhythm Heaven piece. I got 4 Street Fighter IV hits, 9 Kid Icarus, 1 DOA, 3 Mario 3D Land, and 10 for Mario Kart.

I thought the controller was light, but it felt a little heavier than a CC Pro because of whatever was inside it.

The Nintendo Land bit is hilarious.

Did you mean Wii Fit U or did a new Wii Sports totally slip past me?

I meant Wii Fit U. There was no Panorama there.

no no no no no

I did block people from wall jumping out of a hole a few times. :)

Panorama, I'm telling you!

No Panorama there as far as I could tell.

Nice write-up and impressions, even has pics. Can you not fire from the hip in ZombiU? Is that what you were saying about having to hold L

As far as I could tell, you could not fire your weapon without holding down the L trigger down. If I just pressed R, it did a melee attack with the weapon.

Here's some bad quick pictures at the Chicago event lol;

I wish I took more than 6

and I didn't even notice there was Pro controller out there!

Tip: see that guy with the headset? He's playing Zombi:U...
He took SUCH a long time with it, I just left to go play something else, just a heads up, don't waste time waiting on it if it's crowded.

CCPro is the cheapest feeling controller I've ever held. Why do people actually like that thing?

It feels cheap because it's pretty light, aside that it has a great d-pad, and the shoulder buttons are easy to reach and switch. I think it's great, at least it feels great in my tiny hands.

Nice impressions Oni Link. How are the triggers on both the GamePad and Pro Controller? Are they Analog or Digital? Been wondering this since E3...

Posted this in the WiiU community thread, figured it should go here as well:

Just got back from the Atlanta WiiU Experience. Had a fun time, most everybody seemed to have a blast.

Anticipation going in (for games available to play):
1. ZombiU (played single/multi)
2. P-100 (didn't play)
3. NSMBWiiU (played with Gamerpad and wiimote)
4. NintendoLand (played three minigames)
5. Arkham City (didn't play)
6. Pikimin 3 (played)
7. Rayman Legends (played with Gamerpad)
8. Game & Wario (didn't play)
9. Wii Fit U (didn't play)
10. Ninja Gaiden 3 (didn't play)
11. Just dance 4 (didn't play)
12. SiNG (didn't play)

Note: Scribblenaut, AC3, Mass Effect 3, etc. not available to play.

Gamerpad: felt comfortable, lighter then expected. The back buttons are nicely placed, and the controller just felt right inside my hands. Touchscreen was surprisingly very responsive to fingers, in fact I did not see one demo using the stylus.

CCPro: Felt like a 360 controller....almost exactly like a 360 controller. Which is a good thing.

Overall, I had zero problems with controls at the events, and everything I played felt surprisingly intuitive.

ZombiU (single-player): I was really shocked at how easy the section seemed to be. I breezed through the Nusery, mostly without bullets and a cricket bat. In fact, I killed the Nusery 'boss' with two bullets and tons of whacks from said bat. I only had two bullets because they seem to be very scarce, and so are weapons. You die with one bite, but you have two injections (per character) that will kill a zombie if he grabs you (as long as you press the proper button in time). No idea if you can collect more or not. I would like to add that I had already seen a full walk-through of this stage before, and the mumbled sound really took away from the atmosphere/scares. As for controls, the touchscreen worked really well with the fingers, and the need to constantly switch back and forth made for some tense moments. The game controls were extremely intuitive, and I had the hang of them within a minute. Overall, ZombiU seems to have a ton of potential.

ZombiU (multi-player): I only got the chance to play with the CC Pro/Human, and while the mode was fun, it seemed to lack much depth. You are in a fairly small area, and you have to capture the flags before the Zombie creator does. Maybe the guy I was playing against sucked, but I breezed through each zone (even without inverted Y-axis....ugh) and completed my task within ten minutes. I would of liked to get a go at the Gamerpad, but time had ran out. :/

P-100: They only had one station up, and the line was fricken crazy long at all-times besides the beginning (while I was playing ZombiU right next to it). At one point I was waiting in line for it, but I saw that NintendoLand had opened up and I had at least four people in front of me, so I dashed over there instead. Everybody I talked to had no fucking idea what it was, but enjoyed it immensely. The graphics looked surprisingly good, and the game looked like it was neat. Wish I could of played it. :/

NSMBWiiU: It's NSMBWii with awesome backgrounds.... and touch platforms. As always, 2D Mario was a joy to play, and had by far the longest line. There was a crowd around both stations the whole two hours. I didn't get to play in the tournaments, but I did get some time with the Gamerpad. It seemed to me that the touch platforms could be used to make some amazing speedruns, and elsewhere could be fun for someone who can't handle actually playing Mario.

NintendoLand:

Luigi's Mansion - A better version of Pac-Man Vs. I only got to play as the ghost, but sneaking up on people and being able to drag their bodies around to set up other players is evil... and genius. Everybody I was playing with was laughing their heads off, and it seemed to be a really popular game at the event.

Animal Crossing - Basically Chase Me, but a bit deeper. Played both the runners and the guards. As runners, you really have to work with your teammates because the guards have a huge advantage. Runners are so simple to play, but being able to drop fruit to outrun/escape guards only to swoop back around to pick them up later was grin inducing. As Guards, you are bad-asses. You can trap the little runners like mouses, and it's easy to do with some proper planning. I was surprised how easy it was to control two different characters with each analog. Other games should try and use this technique. Anyways, I beat the runners within 30 seconds because they were all gathered at a three-button-fruit tree and I surrounded them before they knew what was coming. No stolen fruit on my watch!

Donkey Kong - Played in a tourney, got three chances to reach the princess. I was the first one to play, so I messed up pretty badly the first two times, but I still had a good time with it overall. Seems like a neat sidescrolling version of something like Korniopa, which I dug. The controls are very sensitive, and you have to keep a certain speed/angle for all different kinds of slopes, or otherwise you will hit a wall or tilt over like in Trails HD. No one ever made it to the princess, so the game was pretty hard.

Overall, I was really surprised at how fun NintendoLand was. It's not Wii Sports, but everybody I saw playing looked to be having a great time. As a bundled game, I do think it could move some consoles. I saw the Zelda Quest which looked badass (combination of Swordplay in Wii Sports and Archery), but I didn't get to play. :/

Arkham City: I saw a bunch of people playing it, never got my hands on it though. Arkham City was my GOTY last year, and this version looked basically identical (graphically and content-wise), but the gadget menu being on the Gamerpad could help make it a smoother experience. I did see some gyro controls that looked a bit shoehorned into the gameplay, but overall it looked like a good port.

Pikimin 3: My game of the show. This is the one game that made me want to put my money down for a WiiU NOW! And you know what? I don't even particularly like the previous Pikimin games. I thought they were fine games, but had clumsy execution through the gamecube controller and lack of proper hardware for such a game. Pikimin 3 solves both of these problems. You have an overhead map on the gamerpad (which is propped up right in front of you with a stand) and wiimotion+ along with the nuncuck to control Olimar/the Pikimin. The whole experience just felt so intuitive, like the game was MEANT to be played this way. I can't even put it fully into words, but this game sold me on what Nintendo is trying to do with the WiiU. The combination of all these controls methods so wonderfully weaved together creates an experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else. A hardcore experience that HAS to be experienced on WiiU.

Rayman Legends: My surprise of the show. Legends looked absolutely wonderful. To be frank, it made NSMBWiiU look bad. The Gamerpad controls also made NSMBWiiU's touchpad functions look like a joke. There is so much you can do here (from creating platforms, collecting items, tilting platforms, sling-shooting items at monsters, playing a fricken musical sidescrolling level, and unleashing traps on monsters) that it almost felt like its own game. Origins is a good game (though I have some personal problems with it), but Legends felt like a step above in every single way. I could only imagine playing this on five players, what a blast that would be!

Note: The Rep said the game can only be played with two or more players (don't know how reliable she is). But, the gamerpad controls are so in depth I really can't imagine how you could play the game WITHOUT some one controlling the helper. Maybe we were playing special stages, but I can't help but wonder if somehow, in some crazy way, Legends isn't single-player compatible. And if so, I can't see how any other platform could totally replicate the experience found here single-handily (you would need two Vitas, two 3DSes, Wii and 3DS, Ps3 and Vita, or Smartglass with the 360).

Game & Wario: Literally saw nothing of this game, and it had the shortest line of the show.

WiiFit U: I saw some brief glimpses of some of the games, which all honestly looked like fun. One had you walking on the balance board while balancing a try (the gamerpad) with food on top, trying to serve people without dropping anything. The other ones were a trampoline game with the Gamerpad set on the ground to aim your fall/create the illusion of going higher, and a bobsleding-like game only using the balance board. Once again, looked like fun, and everybody who played it was extremely sweaty after.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Had the second shortest line, the graphics looked pretty darn good. Didn't get a chance to see how the game really controlled, but I talked to a guy who said it was actually a pretty enjoyable experience.

Just Dance 4 and SiNG: These were in separate rooms, with a handful of people playing each at all times. I didn't get to see much, but I heard a lot of cheering.

Overall:

WiiU seems to be a system with a ton of potential, and a good launch line-up for casual gamers and Nintendo fans. Like the generation before, the WiiU will no doubt be the king of local multiplayer. It also looks to have the potential to be a better Wii in every way, with great Nintendo games (like expected) and some nice third party titles along the way. That's all I'm currently expecting after my WiiU experience, and anything else would be gravy for me.

Anticipation coming out (for games that were available to play):
1. Pikimin 3
2. Rayman Legends
3. Nintendoland
4. ZombiU
5. P-100
6. NSMBWiiU
7. Arkham City
8. Wii Fit U
9. Ninja Gaiden 3
10. Game & Wario
11. Just Dance 4
12. SiNG

Nice impressions Oni Link. How are the triggers on both the GamePad and Pro Controller? Are they Analog or Digital? Been wondering this since E3...

They're digital. They're really just buttons and not triggers. You can't even push them down that far.

Oh, and I'm glad to see you made it out there and had a good time, Skiesofwonder.

The one I went to in San Diego had a station set up for each individual Nintendo Land game they were showing (5 in all I think) so there was no "No, we're going to play this." Also, the Luigi's Mansion game was the most fun Nintendo Land game I played while the Zelda one was pretty lame imo.

I also thought the Pikmin 3 demo was lackluster. Worst graphics there and I couldn't figure out how move my entire group of Pikmin (like you do in the GCN games with the C-stick) so I had to throw Pikmin individually at items and walls and stuff which is lame.

See, this is why I thought they weren't clickable. I also noticed how long the WiiU was in the ZombiU multi room, even took a picture lol.

No you can't. The firing button is the melee button when you aren't holding down L to aim.

holy shit. when where is this in atl?

gonna be back in the states saturday midnight. will i be able to make it?

They didn't have me on the list (even though I signed up through one of Oni Link's invites) but they still let me in. So.... you mostly likely can get in without an invite.

I'm not even bothered that you can't fire from the hip. The way ZombiU is shaping up it seems to want to focus on a slower paced survival game. Not a squeeze-and-cheese fps.

Oh ok just as I thought. Thanks!

Ha, thanks for the invite! I kept scanning the crowd, thinking "at least one of these people is a Gaffer", lol. Looks like we both came out thinking Pikimin 3 and Rayman Legends were the two stand out games.

I went to one of these events but never really said much about it. If anybody cares:

WiiU Gamepad - Felt better than expected and so light I doubt they had batteries in them.
WiiU Pro Controller - The buttons and sticks felt more like the restyled Wii classic controller than an Xbox 360 controller, which is not a good thing in my book. No rumble.
WiiU System - The OP isn't kidding, that shit was long. They didn't want any photos of it because it's not final hardware. It better be shorter or it won't fit in my entertainment center.

Rayman Legends - Game of the Show. The asynchronous co-op felt fresh and sublime. I had equal fun being the helper or Rayman. The look was overall a nice upgrade over Origins (although I don't love the polygonal stuff). Justified the existence of the Gamepad for me.

New Super Mario Bros. U - I won the speed-run tournament. Core game felt solid if unremarkable. Being the helper with the gamepad was a huge downgrade from Rayman.

ZombiU - Disappointment of the Show. The melee and shooting did not feel good, even after spending some time with them. I've heard that your character improves the longer you stay alive but the combat I played felt kinda bad.

Project P-100 - Has a ton of potential. The gamepad stuff was pretty gimmicky, and I can envision the game being played without a gamepad, but it didn't negatively impact my experience. Defeating mid-bosses and adding them to my posse was neat. Art was playful and really shiny.

Pikmin 3 - Played like Pikmin. I didn't experience anything new or exciting. Looked nice.

Game & Wario - The mini-game I played was trading off the same gimmick as Takamaru's Ninja Castle. No me gusta.

Batman - Hacking mini-games were a real turn off. Game looked worse than PS3 and 360 thanks to erratic tearing and framerate but that will probably be fixed.

Ninja Gaiden 3 - Played through the desert level. More weapons, dismemberment, and less "steel on bone" still don't make it a good game.

Nintendoland - Overall the mini-games didn't seem like things I would go back to.
*Donkey Kongs Crashcourse - Very challenging. Felt and looked like a $0.99 iPad game.
*Luigi's Ghost Mansion- reminded me of Pac-Man versus. Communication between players was important. Enjoyable, but when it was over nobody wanted to play it again.
*Animal Crossing Sweet Day- similar asynchronous multiplayer concept but we had less fun with it
*Takamaru's Ninja Castle- Boring in less than a minute in, shows the weakness of aiming at the tv by using gyros and not IR.
*The Legend of Zelda Battlequest- By far the most interesting game. Holding the Wii U gamepad and being the archer was neat. Using the "panorama view" to look around and aim worked well. My teammates using swords seemed to be having less fun.

Just Dance 4/Sing/WiiU Fit- meh

Um, I'm pretty sure that's how all FPS games work. I've never played one where you can toggle the scope in and out. Crouch, yes, but nothing else.

Holding L to aim and R to shoot is wrong? What?

It just felt like it was overly complicated to have ZR do 2 things with ZL as a modifier when they could have just made ZL melee attacks and ZR shoot like in other FPS games.

Ha, thanks for the invite. I kept scanning the crowd, thinking "at least one of these people is a Gaffer", lol. Looks like we both came out thinking Pikimin 3 and Rayman Legends were the two stand out games.

Nothing really wrong with it, just felt a bit weird without the option to hip fire.

Did you see a bald Puerto Rican dude with a black Slipknot workshirt on?

Rayman was totally the best looking game there. No ifs or buts about it. Best graphics period.

Like you said, the controls are really what made Pikmin 3.

Um, I'm pretty sure that's how all FPS games work. I've never played one where you can toggle the scope in and out. Crouch, yes, but nothing else.

That's not how other FPS game work at all. Usually it's more like, L throws a grenade or does a secondary fire and R shoots your gun. In Zombi U, ZR does a melee attack and ZL works as a modifier. If you hold down ZL, you can press ZR to shoot your gun instead of doing a melee attack.

hmmm.... I think I remember seeing someone wearing a slipknot shirt, but for whatever reason I can't tie a face to it. I was wearing a blue polo with a pink collar, some shorts, and sandals.

Yep, Rayman was fricken gorgeous, and Pikimin 3 controlled like how all real time strategy console games from now on should.
