Oh wow, that sounds extremely juicy. Practically THE moment people have been waiting for if I understand correctly. I'm already excited at the prospect of the Wii U being blown wide open, but apparently the community has been lead like this quite a few times in the past, so I guess I shouldn't get hyped *just* yet.
But fingers crossed!
If the Brazilian devs showed us anything is that sometimes people do act on their words. Hope is not lost!

Besides, I honestly believe when team SALT says they are working on polishing the tools to make them as user friendly as possible.

Once USB loading gets sorted out, is there any reason I shouldn't expect to be able to use the Hdd that's attached for my original Wii games?

I think it has to do with the fact that the Wii U formats the HDD to a file system that only it uses, and you can't create partitions within it.

If IOSU doesn't let people enable different partitions within a HDD, the best solution would be to have a WFBS-like folder for Wii U games, just like Wii USB loaders work nowadays.

Really late edit: It seems a partial redNAND tool has been leaked. It seems to be unfinished and not "official", so wait until there's a proper release to use it!

Hey, guys. So, yeah: a partial release of RedNAND is floating around. I would advise against using it, since it's incomplete and it lacks the NAND dumper you need to, well, dump your NAND.

Two important things to notice:

The ETA/tentative release date is on Monday. It's subject to change, of course, but the WiiUBrU team seems to already have everything tied down.

You will have to dump your NAND. The NAND is, in general terms, the internal memory of the Wii U. That means that you will need AT LEAST a 64GB SD card to dump the NAND of a 32GB Wii U. It's not known at this moment of 8GB Wii Us work.

I was going to ask if the same SD that is used for other things (like storing Miiverse photos and screenshots or Nintendont) could be used with RedNAND, but the topic on GBATemp was closed...

[How-to] Load a fw.img for Any File Dumping + WiiUBru status update

For the past three weeks there has been heavy active development on our WiiUBrU forums regarding the IOSU exploit by generous users of the community. It has been developed in the public-eye, and as a result was able to gain speed quickly by not creating a barrier for people who wanted to get involved.

Today, one very important thing is being "officially" released:
CFW Booter - A .elf file for the Homebrew Launcher which will boot a custom fw.img off the root of the SD card. In other words, this is a stable version of the long-coveted "IOSU exploit" for 5.5.x users only !!
Expect TIK files for every game in the near future :)

Anyone heard something about the brazilian hack ?

A friend wants to "instal" his super mario maker disc to digital and i heard patched rips are already on the internet ... anyone knows if it updates normaly ?

edit :
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-usb-loading-install-wiiu-games-to-usb-or-internal-memory.445514/

You can update the game (remove the server filters or use NNUPatcher before launching the game) or use WUP installer to install manually.
[..]
You cannot brick your WiiU with this method, as long as you try games and updates. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL ANYTHING ELSE (like system titles) OR YOU WILL BRICK.
It can be done, will not brick but it is hard to find the WUD

This is a very... controversial topic, since you need a TIK file that, until yesterday, could only be obtained by illegal means. You don't need WUDs anymore, though. Most, if not all, of the games that had been dumped in WUDs have their tickets available as a separate download on some certain sites. You know where. With the method released by team WiiUBrU yesterday, you can get your own TIK ticket files if you are willing to do a bit of tampering and homebrewing here and there. And then you need to download the game from the NUS... so the method itself can't be discussed here.

yeah ... not sure if it is worth the trouble for what it gives =P
Well, for what it's worth, I'm in love with having my physical collection on my HDD. It'll be wise to wait until tomorrow, though, since it's the rumored release of RedNAND and that may get rid of the need to use TIK files to install your games. You may be able to dump them directly into the Wii U, if I have to guess.

I did the new hack without using a PC and I have a question: do I have to go to the Wii U browser every time I want to launch homebrew? Is there anyway to create a shortcut on the actual Wii U home screen?

Not yet. A IOSU exploit is just around the corner (it's actually out, if you know what you're doing, but it doesn't have coldboot) and that will allow you to install homebrew to the Home menu.

spoiler : you don't know what are you doing.

Neither of us know
Eh. The process of dumping the NAND and setting up RedNAND is fairly straightforward and pretty much brick risk-free. The dumper is unstable and fails a lot, but it only reads the NAND, it doesn't write to it, so it should be a brick-free experience. The issue is more that there's not much you can do once you have the RedNAND up and running. You can fake tickets and install VC and eShop games, but that's about it. You can't install homebrew (like the Homebrew Launcher) just yet. And there's no coldboot, so you'll have to use the browser every time you want to boot to it.

I would do it myself, but whenever I start doing something just for the sake of it, as soon as I'm done the proper, easier method comes out immediately afterwards :p

Haha yes, exactly this. Spent a whole weekend doing my 3DS only for easy stuff to come the week after.

WUDs can now be used to install games not available through the NUS via USB, thank's to Crediar's new DiscU. That means games like Super Luigi U (standalone), Project Zero or the Call of Duties.

Being able to have all my physical disc games installed to the home menu as if they were digital titles is
great. and no longer having to do the whole web browser>exploit site>homebrew launcher>loadiine song and dance is even better. =D

How the hell do you do that?
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-usb-loading-install-wiiu-games-to-usb-or-internal-memory.445514/

This method is using WUP installer to install the eShop version of a game using its ticket extracted from the disc version of the same game. The ticket from the disc can be extracted from a WUD image or from a console who already played that game disc.
So :
- The game needs to be on eShop.
- The WUD needs to be dumped for that game, or you need a ticket dumped from someone else's console.
- Tickets extracted from a WUD image need to be fixed (IF they are wrong). Tickets extracted from NAND are already good.

GBATemp moderator FIX94 has just published wuphax, a way to hack the vWii using IOSU, without the need of an exploitable Wii game! That's great news for everyone getting a Wii U these days, either because of the Switch lacking BC out of the box or thanks to the advances in the scene :)

Now to do this you have to do the following:
Make sure to have iosuhax with only wupserver enabled set up already, this version can be found in my fork of iosuhax which is part of the thread I pointed out already.
If you did not acquire iosuhax by compiling it yourself, make sure you also install python for this to work, I tested this only in python 2.7.
Download the release of this project and extract it into a new folder.
Download the hackmii installer and put its boot.elf on your sd card.
From now on, everything will happen in the new folder you created for the release of this.
To use this start up iosuhax and edit the wiiu ip in wupclient.py (line 29) to match the one you have.
After that run backup.py, this should give you a 00000001.app if everything went well.
Run injectdol.py, this should give you a boot.app.
Now just run writedol.py and wait for it to upload the new executable.
After that is done, shut down your wiiu, unplug its power, replug it and go into wii mode.
In wii mode, run the mii channel, this should start up the boot.elf on your sd card root, install homebrew channel from here.
To restore your original mii channel, start up iosuhax again and run restore.py.
After that is finished you can just shut down your wiiu again, unplug the power and replug, after this point your mii channel should be back to normal.
This will get you both Wii backups and Nintendont (GameCube games) on your Wii U. The little Nintendo console that could.

Calling it a "hack" is giving it too much credit. I'm not saying the Brazilians who discovered this don't deserve some recognition, but it's more of a gross oversight from Nintendo than a proper "hack", like iosuhax can be.

Speaking of which, if you don't fully know what you're doing, I wouldn't recommend diving into iosuhax right now. Not that there's any chance of bricking (very little, if any), but the process is really cumbersome and prone to fail at the moment. It's better to wait until WiiUBrU or SALT publish their work. Both are promising much more user-friendly tools and processes.

But isn't most hacks based on gross oversights like Cube Ninja, Twilight Princess, Bannerbomb or even the Smash Stack one ?

Looks like there's a fairly stable NAND dumper RedNAND launcher as of today too. Still not user friendly at all but much more reliable.

Yeah... but this one is even more obvious. It doesn't need to overflow anything, nor race the kernel or anything. It's just editing a byte of information and the security system is tricked into thinking the content is legit.

Looks like there's a fairly stable NAND dumper RedNAND launcher as of today too. Still not user friendly at all but much more reliable.
Yep. Here's a guide, from GBATemp.

No coldboot, it would seem?

Edit: Changed the guide to GBATemp's original. Hackinformer's linked to no-no content... SMH.

Anyway, I don't think I'll be trying this right now. It doesn't give me anything that I haven't gotten yet from the "Brazilian method". Once we get coldboot, I'll jump right in without hesitation!

the one thing that would get me to get deep with Wii U hacks is if they find a way to fix vWii's scaling. that would be great to enjoy BC properly. hopefully someone gets on that at gbatemp.

Well, I dumped my NAND and installed RedNAND without any issues. The process is a bit long, since it takes forever to dump the NAND, but it went very smooth on the first try.

I'll stick with SysNAND + USB for the time being, though.

Wait, what is wrong with vWii scaling? I've found the IQ to be surprisingly good for a 480p image.

would this rednand thing allow for homebrew or just play games off hardrive?
You already can install games on the hard drive without any exploit needed. RedNAND allows you to install unsigned content (like homebrew) on the Home menu. There's nothing that takes advantage of it right now, though, but give it a few days and stuff will start to come out.

So is there any formatting on PC that I need to do to a hard drive or sdcard if I want to rip disks? I remember the wii had its own formatting tool for fat drives.

You can't rip Wii U disks (WUDs) as you could with the Wii, unfortunately. You need specific Wii U hardware to do so.
You can't? The OP says:

What else can I do?

Well first off, you can use DDD to dump your own games. This includes discs, eShop titles, and Virtual Console games.

Then you can use Loadiine GX2 to launch your backups from your SD card.

WUDs are used for the brazilian hack (installing on the system storage), not the loadiine homebrew loaded by the browser hack (copying to an sd card, the one without internet and extremaly complicated way to instal updates)
Ok, maybe I'm being unclear in what I want to accomplish. Is there a relatively easy mod that will allow me to rip my Wii U disks to the SD card and play them from SD?

Yes, sorry. I should have clarified: you can dump "Loadiine-ready" versions of the game, but not proper "scene" WUDs, which are the equivalent of an untouched ISO for the Wii U.

You can use DDD if that's the case. But, honestly, unless you're trying to run VC or eShop-only games, I would recommend digging into the "Brazilian method" and install your games on sysNAND.

Currently looking into buying a Wii U, which seems to be a strange time in regards to homebrew. What just happened? Was a kernel exploit finally released? How does this benefit me as a potential owner of this device? RetroArch/Kodi if you have patience?

As I don't have a Wii U I haven't read up on most of the information about this, but "redNAND" sounds like my hacked 3DS.

I installed a part of my collection on my SD card already, the lighter (2Gb and less) games, except Mario Kart 8.

Something bugs me though, is there a way to start the homebrew channel without having to go to the loadiine website after each reboot? That would almost be perfection after that.

..This and reading my rips from a USB stick because SD card shows its weakness during loadings in some games!

The hype is real. One reason I want the Wii U blown wide open is so that it'll be easier to port/make emulators that actually use the Wii U's resources. Or at least I think it should make things easier than they are right now.

It basically already is. People can literally download games and now install them on the Wii U or rip their own discs.

It's so weird to me that this exploit has been available for many months and Nintendo has done nothing to try and stop it.
