Wii U Virtual Console Controller Compatibility Chart

So, after a billionth question about Wii U VC and whether one can use GCN controller/Wii U GamePad/Wii Balance Board with NES games, I decided to make an ultimate controller and platform infographic for Wii U Virtual Console and Wii Virtual Console within Wii Menu.

It all started with this humble chart... but them i decided to add info about Wii VC and international releases. With the help from Reddit (mostly design and detail nitpicks), I created this:

I need some additional info for the completition of this chart. Are JP Wii U owners here? I would be glad if you help me to privide info about MSX and PC Engine Wii U VC! I will gladly hear every other opinion and complaint, and of course I will be updating this chart whether new or corrected information will be available.

I hope somebody will find it useful!

This is a pretty useful chart, but man the controller situation is such a mess when you start factoring in the Wii's VC titles.

It really isn't difficult for Nintendo to update games with support for various controllers. They just can't be bothered

I'm glad there allow you to use a Wii Remote for SNES games. A lot of games focused on two main buttons anyway.

I still dream of Gamepad use in Wii mode.

It would be awesome if Nintendo found a way to boot up VC software from Genesis and Neo Geo directly from the Wii U menu like their recent Wii releases.

That pro controller situation is a little odd.

Not really all those x's after Wii are from Wii backwards compatibility which of course doesn't support it.

At least with the Wii U VC they realised that if one wants to remap buttons or to play SNES on Wii Remote, they should allow to... But, honestly, I smell big changes with the arrival of Classic Controller-compatible Wii titles on eShop, because they probably won't have excuses to not update their Wii Menu in general.

Pretty sure the GameCube controller is compatible with some VC games... especially N64 VC. I played Majora's Mask on Wii with my old controller after all (didn't own a Classic Controller until I got the Xenoblade bundle).

Because this chart was created for Wii U users, I meant Wii Virtual Console within Wii U's Wii Menu, and, sadly, GameCube Adapter doesn't work with anithing except Smash 4. That's why I placed X's all over this column, to make it perfectly clear.

Edit: lol of course, it's played on Wii U *facepalm*

Wii/Wii U inter-virtual-backwards-sideways compatibility is confusing. :)

The cube controller is useable on Wii's VC. It's just that newer Wiis and all WiiUs lack the port to accept it

Edit: ok answered above

Oh yeeeeah, that was added a while ago wasn't it? Kinda tempted to download now.

It surprisingly holds its value pretty well
if you turn the reticle off
. I want to see more light gun VC games in the future! Maybe we will get lucky and receive Super Scope games sometimes...

I just hate how the Virtual Console has been handled for the Wii U in general. While it wasn't by all means perfect, the Wii's Virtual Console service was a gold mine of popular, obscure, & rare Japanese imports.

There's nothing "subpar" about the emulation quality of the Wii emulators versus the Wii U ones, it's pretty much just the added save states, gamepad input support, and a different HDTV upscaling method. And if you set your Wii U to 480p output and your TV to 4:3 the Wii-mode NES emulator will probably look better than the Wii U one.

I was refering mostly to bad PAL conversion.

Useful chart at a somewhat nightmareish prediciment Nintendo have put themselves in with all these supported controllers.

Of course games like Mario Kart and Smash support many controllers which makes it great! But then you get those lame weird games that support one and one only!! control method.

It's sad that they don't let us use remote and nunchuck to play games on the VC. There shouldn't be any problems with doing that at all.

Or, what is worse, two insanely similar games from one developer (Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper and Hyrule Warriors) with different controller support - one allows using Wii Remote + Classic Controller, the other allows using Wii Remote + Nunchuk instead.

Gamepad needs to stop being just a screen in Wii mode badly. Its just so stupid that it isn't, especially now that they've announced some Wii digital releases will support it.

Thinking about getting a Wiimote and a Classic Controller Pro just to play N64 games.

If we would just know if Nintendo will release N64 games on the Wii U eshop, would save me a lot of money.

Now that they got Wii-games to run from the WiiU-menu, they might use the exact same program for N64-Wii-games.
