Yup. Used those three A LOT (the Minecraft one because it has pretty much all the instructions in it, and the Skyrim one for all the lore). I just couldn't remember the name at first, and was thinking of a site like IGN, with news and reviews, previews, etc..

I bet most of the people here that said they didn't hear about it, have actually seen the site before but just can't remember (same happened to me).

Taking a quick look, I'm not all that impressed either. It looks like a Wikipedia page for the game, but more busy and crowded. I'd probably rather just look at the game's regular Wiki page.

Then again, I'm also not one to use faqs, guide's, etc. Don't play RPG's, etc.

It's the evolution of the "gamefaqs system", I'm legitimately surprised that so many people here on GAF never heard of it since any given game's wikia is usually one of the first results when you google search its name. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say people have used it in the past but don't particularly remember because it just looks like a regular wiki/guide page.

Wikia is pretty great for most of the games I played. I enjoyed looking up random shit when I played Dragon Age

It's great for games because it's more lax with the damn "no original research" and "citation needed" rule, so it's just crammed with more and more of information without all the elitist guarding their articles like Wikipedia.

I have a guts feeling Jimmy Wales probably started it when his own submission was edited out for original research a few years ago.

I stopped adding and writing articles on wikipedia due to elitists protecting "their" pages even when you add sources. I'm done editing wikipedia and am 100% just a reader there now.

Wikia gaming is great. I've been following it while I trying to 100% RDR.

If you need help with something in a game do you go to IGN or Gamespot? Do you even use the internet when playing games? If not than obviously this site wouldn't apply to you - it has no editorial content (which is what I think they're addressing by hiring these people).

Pretty much. I rarely use it for a walkthrough, mostly just to read about background info or get extra information about the plot.

I think that's the good thing about it. It doesn't come off as a gaming site. There are ads yes (to be expected) but no opinion. The sites cut away all the bs and just leaves actual information one can use. That's it. More Wikipedia (hence it's name) and thankfully (a thousand times) less IGN, GameSpot, etc.

Their current sidequest guide they have for mass effect 3 is really good. (they also used the same style guide for skyward sword, also great)

I also loved the fallout wiki since he first part of an entry would be info on how to complete a quest and the second would be a a guide on avoiding glitches that will break the game/mission that would sometimes be longer than the actual guide itself.

UESP is a better wiki than the ES wikia, been around longer as well and was restructured from a fansite into Jimmy's wiki code.

It's not hard to use the site and not know what you're lookin' at. I used it for a long time back in the day thinking it was related to Zam. Then when it started popping up for other stuff I thought I was just using wikipedia but with some special function. I didn't realize it was it's own thing till relatively recently.

wikia is pretty cool and deserves the hits, but how are they differentiating between gaming and other types of wikia sites? wikia is for a lot more than just video games. I was kind of obsessed with the 24 wiki during that show's run, for instance.

If you're going to count wikia as a gaming website, don't you have to count wikipedia as well? I bet wikipedia gets an assload of hits on its gaming articles every day.
