GS AU: What was the dev process like for the PlayStation 3?

EW: It was really exciting. We were thrilled at the opportunity to work on what I feel is the most powerful hardware out there right now and to do something that was brand-new and different. We could have certainly taken the easy route and made another Jak and Daxter game, but we didn't feel that would really push us to achieve something that was fresh and interesting.

GS AU: How much of the PS3's processing power is being used in Uncharted then?

EW: We were just profiling it not too long ago as we were wrapping up production. As far as the Cell processor is concerned, we're actually using about a third to half of that right now, so there's still a bit of untapped potential there.

I actually liked TTS. Not nearly as bad as some people tried to make it out to be.

here i was thinking he was going to comment on how easy the game was to program on PS3.

but then i remember that Naughty Dog wrote their own LISP based programming language for shits and giggles when making Jak and Daxter. Naughty Dog take a complex programming environment as a fun challenge.

Well, its called talent...

... :lol yeah, or madness!

catch phrase is becoming a bigger joke than the emotional engine bragging of the PS2.

Even if its old and tired, its true. Cell is a beast, you can really make it sing if you have what it takes. Same with EE.

Suprise, the best coders on PS2 are the ones making the most impressive looking titles this gen.

Well, this is what a 1st party/2nd party developer is saying (exclusive to PS3, so you can bet they have a vested interest in PS3's success), while Harmonix is a 3rd party developer with no specific interest in any one console over another.

There's this little knob inside your PS3, see- it's exactly like the knob on the side of your toaster. And when you're playing Uncharted one of the little gremlins inside the PS3 turns that knob to about the third-power setting. Right between "Pastry" and "Bagel". God's honest truth.

I've been opposed to this Shiturday posting from the very beginning...

A very talented first party team with a huge budget and constant Sony engineering support can take advantage of the CELL architecture better than a 3rd party team developping a multiplatform, medium budget title? Shocking.

I really love you guys sometimes.

Early start to the weekend I see...

Good to see ND enjoying the development process and not bitching like so many others do. (regardless of platform)

I completely agree, but its just silly that sony's tools aren't good enough so that only the top coders in the industry can get to it's true potential.

This is something Sony needs to learn from this generation. They can not get away with having fantastic hardware if their SDKs are not good enough. If the PS3 had tools as good as the 360's when it came out, it would outsell the xbox 3 to 1 right now.

you can forgive them for thinking that they could after last generation.

Meh. It was arrogant of them to think that this generation would play out just like the last one because of brand loyalty. It'll probably be good for them in the long run though, the PS3 will *scream* in 3 years and the PS4 should have robust software tools.

well at least ND was asked their opinion about PS3 development.

The other guy offered up his opinion with nobody asking. Wonder if there was an agenda in there somewhere.
