Will I appreciate Dragon Quest VIII more if I play DW1-3?

Since you have 2 Sages (right), were you recasting Sap/Barrier/Increase/Twinhits with one while using the Sage Stone with the other? Healall hurts
Zoma
if you have the chance.

That's pretty much what I was doing sans Sap, hell I'm not even sure what Sap does. But I was putting up barrier first, and well, he was doing the icy blast so much that half the time Twinhits was an utter waste, as he'd nullify it before I even got to attack.

Sap is a good replacement for Twinhits; it removes all of a target's Defense Power
Zoma has 200?
, which makes the fight quite a bit easier.

WOOOOO!!!!!!
Alright! Now I just have to wait until my DQ4 copy to arrive!
Wait what is this crap
sending me to that cave where magic is blocked? Damn jerkwads!!!
I don't recall that happening before. Oh well. Awesome. Oh, I forgot to do the invisible spell. Haha, oh well.
So I guess I'll mess around with other stuff til my copy arrives, which should be tuesday. Never played DQ4 before, this should be interesting.

pito: what's your equipment now?
I am presently pimped out with:

Thunder Sword/Dragon Tail/Flame Boomerang
Blade Armor
Wind God Shield
Ortega's Helmet (should I upgrade to the tiara sold at the Elf village? doesn't Ortega's helm have breath defense or something?)
Meteorite Armband

Edit: Well I guess I can't get anything from the Elf shop until way later since I already handed over the Change Staff, so nevermind.

So I decided to go to the 3rd parchisi place and land on the shop so I could buy the damn Fire Boomerang. In FORTY tries (I know because that's how many tokens I had), I failed to land on it a single time. Oh, but it gets better. Apparently on one of the two or there times I landed on the ? square and it affected my stats it glitched something, because my Hero's STR dropped from about 150 to 68. AND I haven't made a hard save in about 8 hours. I am extremely fucking pissed right now.

Why ever the FUCK would you attempt a Pacheesi track without saving directly beforehand?

And why ever the fuck would you not save for 8 hours straight?

Conversely, the pachisi tracks can be a great place to raise stats as well. In my search for that boomerang shop I ended up raising strength and agility by about 10 each. If I ever got a stat decrease, I'd reset and go back.

Well I thought I had hard saved once or twice. Also, I had 40+ tokens, I was hardly concerned about that (or so I thought at least). I don't hard save very often in DW games because you can only do it w/a King or in Dharma, and when I'm off doing levels or whatnot that's not convient. Plus if you were to die for some reason (I've only died twice so far in playing the first there games), you're just taken back to where you last saved with half your money which is never an issue for me anyway. I usually only hardsave once or twice a day.

Obviously if I had been aware there were glitches involved with this I would have saved.

See, that's what I don't get; my STR got taken down twice, both times by 2, then it got taken UP once by 5; I should've come out ahead if anything -_-.

Hi everyone. I gotta few questions about DQVIII Im hoping you can answer....

1)Coming out November....what?
2)progressive-scan?
3)5.1DD?
4)Can you save in dungeons this time?
5)Is the music any good? Better than 5 or 6?

1)Ships 11/5 last I checked.
2)I think so, not 100%. I know that's been brought up before, I'm sure someone knows.
3)See 2.
4)No clue.
5)The soundtrack is pretty good. Probably better than 6's IMO. I have not heard the OST for the remake of V though, which everyone says is awesome, so no comment on that.

Damn that sucks. You don't have the Return spell to make some quick save and heal pit stops? It's not so much the glitches (which are pretty rare), but the very "gambling" nature of the Pacheesi tracks that make me save before I ever hit them up. Also, there is a glitch that can, apparently, make your hero go up to level 99 right away. Lol. GBC version, I mean.

Well I'd spent the vast majority of the day leveling up new classes by the volcano, so I was returning to Ashalam (sp?) which is right by there, and you can't save there. I could have sworn I'd saved after I made my final class change (Jester to Sage), but my last save was right before I BECAME a Jester =/. So I lost most of the day. Honestly at this point I don't think I'm going to bother going Warrior to Jester to Sage again. I'm going to just stick with what I've got now and run with that, I should be okay: Warrior34/Hero34/Fighter20/Sage20. Most of the day was spent doing the Warrior changes, and I did the Phantom Ship, but I can redo that in just a few minutes. So if I forego the class change I only lost like an hour, I'm just more annoyed in principle that I basically lost an entire day off worth of playing :lol .

I did the same thing the very first time I played through a Pokemon game.

Well, actually, I leveled up my team for about 5 hours... and then my batts died.

Hell, same thing happened to my sister. But that was her first real RPG anyway. I guess we all have those days, at some point...

Anyone know what's going to be in the limited edition Dragon Quest VIII strategy guide? I have one preordered along with the game and the slime controller at GameStop, but no word on what the extra(s) will be. I'm hoping for a soundtrack, but would settle for an artbook ;)

Limited Edition Guide!?! Why was I not informed of this? I go to preorder, post haste!

AMERICA, FUCK YEAH

Can't find any info anywhere. Doesn't even exist on Brady's site. Only thing I can think of would be maybe a play along DVD type thing, but hasn't that been a Prima thing up until now? Plus, that's not really necessary for an RPG game.

You may want to swap the Wind God Shield with a Dragon Shield for extra breath defense.

Ow, daravon. :/
The 3rd is not the final dice game board; now you know to save. >.> That really stinks though.

1-SD says the 15th, I just know "November".
2-I dunno. The JP version has a screen size option (normal or wide; wide is squished on my tv).
3-All it has in the manual is stereo/mono.
4-No. Still at churches/churchy people only. None of the dungeons are really long in this, though.
5-The music is alright; I liked the remake of 3-5's better though.

Okay, I keep getting owned by Baramos. I don't think there's anything wrong with my battle strategy: I open with Mahotoon to shut him up, then use the Orochi Sword twice to lower his defense. After that it's a matter of throwing up a Behoma when my HP gets below 160 (his maximum damage is around 150 after Dragon Shield and Mahotoon) and using a Prayer Ring when my MP gets low.

I've heard that bosses in DW3 regenerate a set number of HP per round, and I think this has to be true. I didn't add up all my damage during the first attempt, but it must have been well over 2,500. Hell, I was fighting for over 45 minutes, and at ~125 damage per turn he should have been dead in under 15 minutes

He has 2,500 max HP, but he may regen 100 per round. I can't remember, but he does in the GBC one (I think I did over 9,000 to him and he still killed me). What level are you? IIRC, I have over 300? when I'm able to kill him. I may still have a save..

Level 41, my HP is 354. If I don't beat him this time I'm just going to level some more.

Okay, I did the math. If he gets back 100 HP per turn, after three rounds (attack, attack, heal), I'm inflicting about 124 damage.

Hurray for leveling!

Hmm, you're equipping the Meteorite Armband before the fight, right? 41 should be high enough, IIRC. I don't have a save state at the battle, and I doubt my cart will have anything, but let's see..I'm pretty certain you *should* be able to beat him under Lv40.

Also, don't forget to add the backlash damage from Blade Armor.

Meh, all I have on my cart is a solo Hero save after beating the game (Lv55), and one at the very end of the game
with the Iron Ball of Destruction/up to the God Dragon
at Lv58. Maybe I'm thinking ~400HP for Baramos.

You may want to try using the Grass Cutting Sword 3x instead of two (-100, then -50, then -25 dp). But maybe it's 400HP (it's been about a year since the last time I went through a solo Hero DQ3 game, blame 8).

I think I can reach 400 HP in the next few levels. I'm finding that levelling with the Gale Bandana equipped gives me 20+ HP per level, so I'm going to put that on before I hit each level. Currently at 376 HP.

Did you use seeds as soon as you got them? Some people choose to wait, because once you reach a certain amount, the game starts laming out with stat bonuses (but I just use them asap anyway). You *could* be cheesy and just play the first dice game board and get HP+6 bonuses.. >.>

Yeah, I use all seeds as soon as I get them.

HP bonuses you say...!

Land on an '!' square, have the first roll be a 6 (HP), the second roll a 6 (# of points), then the third roll a 4-6 (added; 1-3 are subracted). If you're in a groove levelling though, then take your pick. Or you could just go see if 400HP lets you beat him, then just level up until you have 400HP naturally.

Or, I could find out really quick w/ the debug.

I'm cool with levelling, I enjoy hunting Metal Babbles anyhow. And I'd never appreciated the Blade Armor as much as I do when MB hunting.

I just got him at lv45 with 409HP and ~173MP. I lowered his Defense Power 3x, had to use a Prayer Ring once, and healed when I fell below 150HP. So when you hit 400HP, if you have that many MP or more, you should be able to beat him. My strength seemed low (170's), so if you have more, even better.

Slugging onwards. I just
got to the DW1 world.
. My levels seem to be pretty good, I'm owning everything rather handily. I unexpectedly have tommorrow off (took a free day off work...I probably shouldn't have but who am I to pass up a free day off?), so I'm really hoping to wrap it up tommorrow, then on to 4. I've had an unbelievable urge to play Resident Evil 4 lately, so I might actually take a quick break to play through that again then move onto DW4, dunno.

Yeah you should definitely be able to plow through it seems. Best of luck. And always tread carefully. Don't be a dummy like me and die haha.
I'm waiting on my DQ4 copy from NCSX, which is killing me. I'm really jonsing for more DQ haha. I've been playing assorted things today (since I've been submitting my resume and calling around, waiting for the callbacks now, ugh) but I can't find anything to scratch this damn DQ itch I have, haha.

SailorDaravon said:
Are you doing a playthrough of all the games? If so, you could start on 5 until 4 gets there I suppose.

Could, but I'd hate to give up 5 part way through, and 4 SHOULD be her tomorrow or Wednesday though. Plus, I guess a break isn't that bad, this way I don't get burned out on DQ. Not that it happened to me with the FF series though. That I played all the way through no hitch...

Funny, I was thinking about going back and playing the FF games I haven't beaten yet. I've gone through most of them enough where it'd be boring to do a marathon of them, but I've never beaten 2, 3, 5, and 10-2 (shudder), so I'm thinking I might do that...if I ever finish all of these :p.

Okay, I'm about 5 steps from hitting
Rimuldar (sp?)
and in a battle with a HellNite, and his paralysis breath hits EVERY character. It's never successfully hit a single character before, and it hits all four at the same time? What the fuck. I swear to God, this game hates me ;_;.

Gogo Bastard Sword!
Heh, and already it's been replaced with the Sword of Kings. Right now I'm cleaning out the Pachisi track under Maira/Kol. Once I get the Light Dress it will have been conquered in full.

Are you gonna equip that? I've never tried with it; always kept the Blade Armor on for the whole game once I got that. I don't even think I remember where the Light Armor is anymore (I know where it is, but I just pass it and forget every time now).

It's in the Tower West of Maira/Kol. I've already switched to the Magic Bikini for the defense boost, but I might use the Blade Armor for bosses and Metals. Otherwise the returned damage usually isn't worth it to me.

Ok, I've made it to
Zoma's castle
, can I do this? I am:

Level 54
HP: 446
MP: 240
Sword of Kings/Gringham Whip/Flame Boomerang
Light Dress
Hero Shield
Great Helm
Meteorite Armband

I've also got the Falcon Sword and Blade Armor for hunting Metals if I need to. My stat bonuses are getting pretty pathetic, so if I have to level some more it'll be a while...

I beat him at 55 last time; the bounced damage from the Blade Armor helped, though. And I think I equipped the Falcon Sword instead (and tried using the Grass Cutting Sword once between icy pulses).

Wow, I just got fucking owned by
Zoma.
I owned all of his little buddies badly, but when I got to him it was the other way around. First round he did ice breath (?) twice, before any of my characters got a turn, did the same 2nd round and killed two of my people before they got turns. Then tried to revive my Sage with my Hero, but Vivify failed four fucking times. What the fuck. I'm at Hero41/Warrior40/Fighter36/Sage34. I'm not sure if I'm too low level, or if I just got extremely unlucky (I've got ALL the best weapons/armor you can). Guess I'll level up for a bit and try again, or something. God I hate treking back to the castle (first battle I fought in the castle, an enemy successfully pulled off Disperse on my Fighter, what the hell).

Good ol Troll Kings. Does your Sage have the Meteorite Armband equipped? That should help with getting Barrier cast, and using the Sage Stone is good (heals about 80HP to everyone at once).

If your only Mage/Priest spell caster is your Sage, you may want to just give the Sage Stone to the Warrior to use every round, so your spellcaster can keep up with spells.

I have no idea what the Meteorite Armband is, so I'm guessing no. Does it have a different name in the US version? My guide and none of the FAQs seem to mention it. Giving the Sage Stone to the Warrior isn't a bad idea though.

Lemme check what it's called in the GBC game..looks like Starry(ring icon).

If you don't have that, go into the castle of Isis, then around the outer wall to a staircase going down in the corner. Then go to the center part at the north end to find it in a chest. Doesn't matter how you answer the skeleton. What the item does is it doubles the character's agility, which will undoubtedly help your Sage go first.

DQIV Remix! Woo!
Sure, I haven't gotten that far yet, but it is nice.
And what the fuck is
this opening? I only played DQ4 for about 20 minutes years ago but this is not what I remember opening too. How different is the game?

Let's see what I can remember..I'll try to go in order so as to not give lots away (I'll say them by chapter). Try to hold off with discretion, though.

Leave the game sitting, and you will be introduced to each of the other characters with a little bit of introduction to them (plus their themes will play).

New prologue in the game; starts with the Hero being shown that Cynthia knows the 'Transform' spell (first as a frog, then a rabbit).

Characters can now hold 12 instead of 8 items in their inventory.

New 'stats' screen with battle stats and a 'rank' for how you are playing (ask and I will tell you what they all stand for).

Monsters now animate when they attack.

New Monster List added into the game.
If you complete it 100%, you will receive a special prize.

Chapter 1
Ryan/Ragnar now gets 10,000 experience? instead of 4 or 5k at the end of Chapter 1.

Chapter 2
can find a Small Medal in a town. Casino has a completely different set of prizes. Can no longer buy Metal Babble Shields for 50,000 coins. Meteorite Armbands now cost 10,000 coins instead of 4,000. Falcon Sword now exists in the game, and is buyable at the Casino. Instead of +5 Attack Power and two hits, it has +67 Attack Power and two hits.
Poker has been crippled to the point of it being basically useless (found via savestates). Monster fighting is pretty much the best, if not only way to go.

Chapter 3
If you skip the Iron Safe (you lose no money if you die if you have it), it disappears in Chapter 5 anyway.

Chapter 4
The Silver Tarot Cards have different results. In the NES game, there were 10? possible results, that can only happen once in the same battle. After the initial 10 are used, Nara would always draw the 'Terminator' card, which would summon a Death God/Necrodain. Now, there are fewer results that can happen as many times as they want, and usually it's the card that casts the Zaraki/Defeat spell on the party. The only missable monster in the game is in chapter 4. Every other monster from earlier Chapters can still be fought in Chapter 5.

Chapter 5
Item Bag given to the Hero at the start of Chapter 5. Earlier monsters from previous chapters can be fought in the well from Chapter 1.

Can manually control the other party members in Chapter 5 ('Try Out' tactic replaced by manual).

Can talk to other party members, like in part 7.

Since there is an Item Bag, Nene/Neda? is only a bank, instead of a bank and item depository.

Small Medals are found in different places (but some are still in the same place), and the Medal King now gives you a prize at X number of Medals found, instead of buying prizes with X number of Medals.

Sea monsters that were dummied out of the 8bit release have been undummied, increasing the number of sea monsters by almost double.

Once you reach Mintos, instead of Hoffman/Hector basically no longer existing from the game, he will move to where the bazaar was in Chapter 2, looking for people to make a new town (think Sim in part 7 and the immigrant town). Many characters from previous Chapters and earlier in Chapter 5 are recruitable to join the town.

When you fight Balzack+, the battle theme is Minea+Maanya/Mara+Nara's battle song, regardless if they lead or are in the party (really cool, cause I love their fight song).

Hero no longer learns the Transform spell.

New weapons and armor in the game.

There's a lot more, but I'll have to remember them, and that should be good for now.
