Will Japanese developers rob M$ again?

Seeing as how one of the more fun memes ballyhooed over at the Sony fanboy camp was that Japanese developers used Microsoft funding on doomed/shitty projects in order to get money for elsewhere (i.e. Level 5 and TFLO)...will it happen again?

please re-write that sentence using the Queen's English please.

Well, Sega squandered all their MS money on crap like Sonic Heroes. I think the truth will be told if/when Mistwalker announces their overall platform strategy.

I would say no considering it never even happened this gen. What do people think this business is, school yard baseball card trading? This theory is magnificently absurd.

I would say that it has already happened ... (you know who I'm talking about).

i dunno matlock. the conspiracies run real deep, maybe it's all spinning into action now. Then people with poor taste and bitter minds everywhere can use it as an excuse.

So Sega just thought it would be a good idea to make a bunch of exclusives for a totally unproven console when their finances were in the toilet out of the kindness of their hearts?

Couldnt they use the 360 to build the game then port it over to the ps3 and enhance it from there? Less PS3 DKits means they would save money right? Microsoft would only sell them the kits if they promised them a game of course but couldn't they just push something really shitty out?

Hey now, the original SEGA Xbox exclusives were pretty good. And I wouldn't even say they were doomed from the start!

Probably out of the insane stupidity of their business decisions at the time.

Actually it was more of a quid pro quo sort of thing since the Dreamcast used Windows CE and they had a very close relationship at the time.

It's my understanding that there were only ever a handful of games released for the Dreamcast that used Win CE.

zeegawd, what game is that?

FCK. :/

Let us see what the Tekken PS3 unveiling looks like. If it is close to the E3 trailer than you may be onto something. But I don't know why Japan developers would intentionally want to make a game look bad. Maybe they don't have the funding?

TFLO isn't a great example, as that game was killed thanks to MS rather than Level 5. There's the notion that a lot of the information Level 5 gained from R&D on the project went direct into DQ8/Rogue Galaxy though. A better example might be Shin Megami Tensei Nine, which MS evidently paid out the nose for, then Atlus farmed the game out to Nextech on the cheap while having R&D1 develop SMT3 PS2 internally with their newfound cash.

Microsoft seems to have switched gears since last gen though. You can be sure Japanese companies are seeing "incentives" for releases like Tengai Makyo Ziria, Ridge Racer 6, Dead or Alive 4 and Dead Rising, but I doubt they're being backrolled by actual MS funding. That sort of support is now going to smaller developers and startups for 1st party produced and owned games (Blue Dragon, N3, Every Party, etc).

"We're really optimistic about the future of 360."

*360 sells 42,000 in Japan*

"We're really optimistic about the future of 360."

*finishes development of game within 24 hours, tosses dev kits in garbage, throws "M$ sucks" party afterwards*

I dunno, MS apparently thought it was a good idea to pay the money for those. Can't really blame Sega for taking it. It's not like they dumped a bunch of crappy exclusives on the system anyway, JSRF and PDO are great games.

That picture is from a side mission in FCK, the main game looks better.

Looks even better in motion but Namco hasn't released any gameplay trailers since E3 2005.

I don't look down on Sega at all, in fact those games probably saved the company, but people are posting that it didn't happen at all. To be honest I was quite surprised at how good most of Sega's XBox games were given the fact that they were extremely low-risk for them to develop.

MS actually didn't even "pay" directly. They just offered SEGA a hugely attractive royalty rate (and some free advertising) in exchange for 12 Xbox exclusives to be released over the platform's lifetime... and as usual SEGA ended up getting screwed since their games didn't perform at retail (besides Sports and Sonic ports).

MS did fund the Xbox ports of Shenmue II and PSO 1&2 directly though.

we've all seen the "other" pics from FCK, the question is why does the 'side mission' look like it was developed in another gen.

edit: soccer game looks awesome, stop the hate

watch the official movie 1 from E32005 http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/framecitykiller/media.html

The game always looked as good as the shots. The screens they released from the mini game/side mission look a lot worse than the main game maybe because they don't have time to fine tune it and are just adding some missions to increase replay value. Some Namco Japan employees are working on FCK so I doubt the graphics will suck.

Edit: I think a junior team is working on the football game :p

As bad as Love Football looks in stills, it animates better than any other next sports game. Not jaw dropping animation or anything, but its above the "look at next gen models with current gen animation".

That's not getting robbed... MS paid for a product and Sega delivered. Being robbed is more along the lines of what jarrod described or if a dev takes a big cut for a game and delivers something like those screens of FCK.

For the record... Anybody that believes those screens are indicative of the final product for Xbox 360 are f'ing morons.

I have the E3 video. It looks much better than this. But your logic is not working for me here. Namco is using the UE3.0 engine for this, so why they heck would they have a section designed with the quickness for increasing 'replay value' that looks like it's an average Xbox/PS2 title? It doesn't really make sense for me.

Anyway, let's not turn this into a FCK thread.

To answer matlock's question: All Japanese devs are out to get Microsoft, so they better watch out.

Not all. Don't forget Tecmo. (unless your statement was sarcasm)

Gimme a break you think they use all different assets for the side missions? :lol

They were doomed in the same way any actual articles are doomed in Playboy: Few read 'em, most buy the magazine for the pretty pictures.

(Yes, I'm calling XBox early adopters graphic whores.)

Tecmo is an anomaly. They will be destroyed by developers who can make fighting games that don't suck.*

Wait, Panzer Dragoon Orta looked hella good!

meh! Have you played Ace Combat IV or V? Both have side missions and they look worse than the main game. What about the Tekken force mode in Tekken V? ! Does that look better than the main fighting game? No it doesn't. All Namco games have crappy looking side missions.

haha, but Ninja Gaiden is ace. Now what :D

Don't forget Squeenix, they
gave MS a 3-4 year old MMORPG :lol

Fine. Then, like "Jugs" or some shit because apparently there also wasn't any accounting for taste. :P

hahahhahahah. Yeah, whatever man! SEGA's first few games were good and generally looked good too. My personal opinion is that SEGA released the best Xbox games they made early on it the systems life before the thing gained popularity, which killed any chance of them selling real big. And then the later games generally sucked, and nobody cared anymore. :P

I concede! But only this day you win the fight.

Let me put it this way:

Ridge Racer V sold a lot on PS2: 611,507 in 2000 alone (and that's JP only - can't be arsed to find the final figure, I think it was ~750k) and it was also a HUGE hit in EU.

Ridge Racers was a huge hit on PSP (best selling EU PSP launch game, even!).

But Ridge Racer VI, X360 exclusive sold....~30k in Japan and 9k in US.

:lol Indeed it doesn't even make sense. So you're playing the main game get off your car and decide to start a side mission and suddenly you black out the car windows lose their transparency, all the models and the city get a downgrade to psp land, like WTF!?! Unless side missions consist of the guy playing his psp, there's no reason for the game's already -done deal- models to go on a nosedive into lastgen territory.

Lower quality sidemissions make sense in something like a fighter or maybe war game given you may increase the number of units to total mayhem lvl, but I don't see how they'd apply to something like gta, especially considering how these consoles can easily handle 1000s of onscreen characters at a time with ease.
