Will Nintendo be able to get the Wii U day one update out on time?

The Wii U is less than 25 hours away, and it doesn't seem like the day one update (MiiVerse, HDD support, online play, etc..) is ready!

According to GTTV, the update was supposed to be available to press on Wednesday or Thursday, yet it hasn't been released yet. I'd imagine Nintendo is scrambling at this point.

Keeping in mind today's Nintendo TVii delay to December, do you think the day one update will actually make it out by tomorrow at midnight?

My guess is actually no. I think it will end up coming on Sunday afternoon or Monsay morning... This update NEEDS to be smooth, and they can't risk sending it out too early.

Probably will roll out sometime Saturday just in time for the few able to get it around midnight Sunday morning.

If we don't hear anything in about 24 hours (11pm Sunday night EST) then we can start to worry :p

I'm expecting server overload/failures...

I'm expecting GAF meltdowns.

I'm expecting:

"wah, my Wii U doesn't work"
"wah, I got dead pixels on my gamepad"
"wah, I preordered 3 years in advance, and they didn't have my system for me"

Hopefully none of those are me :/

There's really no compelling reason to release it early at this point. Just so the press can play with it for a day or two? Nintendo probably prefers for everyone to be able to judge for themselves and not be spoiled, instead of risking some snobby review from somewhere.

But that TVii delay means anything is possible. I think it will be there, but by the time I have my console home (noonish) the servers will be crashed.

Anyone know for sure if you can download that stuff in the background WHILE playing a game? Excite levels will drop dramatically if I'm downloading a couple gig file on a slow server for a good part of the day and can't do anything while it happens. It's Nintendo, so I gotta ask...

2 week delay already ! Good grief !!!

It shouldn't take a few hours to download the update but I guess anything is possible depending on whether the servers are overwhelmed. And I don't think you can download system updates in the background, but that's nothing new as it isn't allowed on any platform or console that I'm aware of. (PS3, 360, Wii make you download system updates while watching a download screen, although for those I think you can always just download to a USB and install the update that way unless things have changed.)

Nintendo joining the Day 1 patch brigade (AC3 has one) means they are just as bad as sony and ms now

day 1 patches are a scourge of the industry. Allowing a game through cert just because of a day 1 patch needs to fucking stop

Well this is a console update to allow online features (basically), you don't need an update to play Wii U games! :)

If a company needs to begin production on products at a certain date, they will and patch any unfinished problems before launch. Are you against all patches? Day 1 makes no difference vs a day 100 patch. So you have to download an update before you play, whoop de doo.

If Mario U and Nintendoland required day 1 patches, I'd agree. But the patches are for the OS tweaking of a console. There's a lot of time between when the first unit is manufactured to launch day, so it makes sense that improvements could be made or finalized in that time frame.

Day 1 patches to simply make a retail game run as intended is BS though. Don't go gold until you got it right...

I'd bet we'd see something. Maybe not the full update they intended, but it would have to get basic services out for internet and wii bc.

Hard to know, really. The press should have had access to it well before now. It does make me a little worried.

It's probably done and ready to go.

It just wasn't done when they started production on the hardware months ago.
