Will our collector's editions ever be worth anything?

Pretty straightforward really. I was looking at how much my collector's editions of street fighter 4 and resistance 2 (feel free to laugh) are apparently worth and according to ebay they are worth a lot of money! Of course if you look for yourself, the prices are ludicrous. No one is going to pay 60 for sf4 or 80 for R2, not in a million years.

Are there any collector's edition that we are relatively sure are going to be worth lots of dough? Dare I open my sweet toy boxes and actually enjoy them? What say you GAF?

Doesn't matter to me. I never sell my games or consoles. I kind of hope so, though. Just to say I own something worth tons of money.

I doubt it. Games keep getting re-released and thanks to digital downloads, it's much easier to get a hold of current games.

Nah not really. Buy em cheap and sell the stuff that you don't absolutely love.

There are always exceptions, and games do become rare from time to time. But you can't really count on those.

collector edition where half the value is DLC code to redeem that expire after a year ? Yeah no.... Sorry. Same goes for bad plastic figures...

In my experience, collector's editions released by western developers (Bioshock, Oblivion, etc.) aren't generally worth a lot.

Collector's Editions of Japanese rpg's? Almost always go up in value. Sometimes they aren't even CE's.

But there are exceptions to both of these, of course.

For pure monetary terms, you're better off putting your money in investment. Collector editions should be something you appreciate and would never like the hassle to hunt these obscure gems in future and eventually make do with one in a shitty condition.

90% of them will be worthless. Mostly depends on quantity. Ni no Kuni: Wizard's Edition will probably be worth a whole lot someday (I hope so anyway). Your Halo 3 Limited Edition is worthless. I think they sold something like 1.5 million of those. I guess it's still technically "limited".

Never, unless A) The CE is a legitimately rare collectible (ie: If you didn't have trouble getting one at launch, or even if you pre-order a week or two in advance, it's not rare), and B) You never actually opened and played the game.

Obviously depends on the game, but as a generally rule, probably no. Rare exceptions will exist if a game is both critically acclaimed and hard to get your hands on.

Doubt it.

Something that is manufactured in the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands is rarely worth anything more than what you paid for it, usually less.

The most valuable Designed collector's edition will always be worth less than something which has become collectable naturally.

Well I don't purchase them to resell, I just buy them since they come with cool stuff and I get a lot of them for just a fraction more then what I'd have to pay for the game alone. Some will gain value others won't, depends on supply and demand. Just take a look at Xenoblade, that isn't even a limited edition!

It's a collector's edition, it's value is supposed to be in keeping something you like and was limited, in your collection (for the limited release stuff it came with). Buying one should imply you want to collect it...not try to turn around and sell it.

That said, every CE has value to a fan of the IP. A CE version will probably always be worth more than the standard copy. If you're buying CE's hoping they appreciate in value to a dollar amount greater than what you paid, you're doing it wrong. Stop wasting your money.

I wonder what my Love is over Catherine CE is worth? Only a few stains on it. ;)

It's worth noting that I sold my mgs4 LE with pre order book and bluray for 80 bucks on eBay. And 2 weeks later the same buyer bought my mgs4 Bluetooth headset for 50 bucks.

The fucker is probibly on gaf.

Cool thread; I've been thinking of this lately myself. I guess as others have said, though, it's all a matter of how much the market is saturated with them. Nowadays a lot of collector's editions are hardly even justified with the amount of which are produced. It's a strange sight to walk into a store and see one discounted to all crap years after launch.

I would hazard a guess my limited edition demons souls, sealed witcher 2:dark edition, and sealed Ni No Kuni: Wizard Edition may hold thier value for a few decades.

however: my halo 3 helmet edition and Nathan Drake Figure edition: not so much.

Todays collectors editions are what we used to get as standard editions 20 years ago. I usually get'em to feel like they still make games to that standard. Probably not worth anything unless it's for a japanese made game.

personally, I don't buy CE for money reason. it's usually for things I want personally.

What I do collect for money are rare items for the games or press /media kits which by definition are rare.

for example I have

Uncharted fortune hunter edition
Uncharted 2 folio edition
uncharted 2 media kit

The original World of Warcraft CE is worth some serious bank.

In general you just have to wait it out and see. For example, my Mortal Kombat arcade stick wasn't worth jack the first year. It's at least worth mote than I paid for it now. In 15-20yrs I think it will either be forgotten trash or highly sought after just like all my CEs.

I had all the World of WarCraft expansion collector's editions and recently sold them on eBay.

I have to say - the 'market' for these is incredibly volatile, one week they can go for hundreds of dollars or in my case, they went for around 80 bucks each, normal retail price.

I think a lot will lose value when there are no longer any systems around that will play them. Games with significant online only modes that are shut down will lose value. I personally doubt many PS3/360 CE games will be remaining collectible unless the systems stay in circulation for a long time after their successors release.

Part of a game being collectible is that there is still a way to play it. Which is partly why SNES games are so expensive on ebay right now.

I think so. CEs are always pretty pricey unless the product tanked.

But it probably has to be sealed and undamaged to be worth anything substantial.

For the most part, no, I don't think most LE/CEs from this gen. will hold much value going forward. So many games get them that there isn't as much appeal when you hear "collector's edition" and many are printed in excess.

For a long time I loved the idea of collector's editions of games, but they became so shitty and overpriced that I generally don't pay attention to them anymore. Early this gen. I bought some(Halo 3, Gears 2, DMC4, SF4) and basically didn't feel the extra $20 was warranted. I got suckered in again for Dark Souls, only to end up with a download code and a art booklet that, while nice, fell apart after being opened twice.

Of course there will be some that hold value. I see Ni No Kuni is selling for a shitload right now(wow, I didn't know how much until just checking). Demon's Souls will continue to be pricey. I wonder if the Skyward Sword bundle will keep going up in price or not(have a sealed one) since it probably had a fairly large print.

I sold my sealed copy of the Collector's Edition of Mass Effect [360] for $550 a year or so ago, prior to the release of ME3.

I was very pleased.

Also so that people don't think I have no taste, I do have the original first edition demons souls CE in perfect condition. I even managed to get one that doesn't have any melting or fading in it. im pulling a Rick astley on it and never giving it up.

o.o Holy shit. What was in that? I knew it was kinda rare but I didn't realize it could fetch that much.

It's really not much at all.

It's basically a steelcase, a documentary DVD, and a book of sorts [if I remember correctly].

It's really...really not worth that price, IMO, but it's supposedly very rare. I know it was only sold online at futureshop.ca here in Canada, and in limited quantities.

Not really as they usually saturate the market with collectors editions. How many times have you been in a store and seen collector editions for sale at half their price?

Unlike collectable books or figures, publishers produce far too many in hopes of selling the overpriced editions. With so many on the market, the value will take much longer to hit anything worth profitable.

Depends on the demand at that moment. More than likely, no. The only CE I can think of that has always been worth a high price since release is MGS3.

If it's "really rare" and sealed, it's a collectable, which is a subjective thing to the collector anyway.

Haha, that's true. I guess the rarity aspect makes it worthwhile to the collector, especially if he/she is a fan of that particular title.

Thankfully, I wasn't [purchased it at launch, never got around to playing it, 360 broke, and lost interest], so it benefitted me greatly. >:)

My guess is that 99% are/will be worthless

i agree with this...hell, most of the time they aren't worth the price increase over regular editions even when new. figurines, crappy artbooks that get looked at once and then put away, and dlc codes for dumb shit like costumes are stupid.
