Fun fact:

Will Smith's midi-chlorian count is 20,200. Which is slightly higher than that of Yoda but still slightly lower than that of Palpatine.

Will Smith has made terrible movies, but he's also made plenty great ones. He CAN act....when he wants to.

Or when PheonixDark took those pills that he had?

Stop talking greasy Talib.

I like how you guys have totally reframed the article. It's not about Smith being some wonderful actor - it's about him being the most likable actor in Hollywood, and the most bankable. Who cares. Baby boomers are a totally different breed and to declare them stupid because they have different tastes than you is typical of internet posters who feel their opinion is fact.

Pursuit of Happyness is exactly the kind of movie many people go crazy over because it touches on so many human emotions that people find relevent to them. Personally I'll always respect Smith for being able to do anything as opposed to being the black guy with a gun (Denzel I'm looking at you :() in all his movies. Don't get me wrong, Denzel and other black actors are indeed "better" than Smith, but none seem to be cabable of doing so many different things.

I usually just sit on the sidelines when it comes to these type of discussions, but come on man. Are you actually saying Will Smith is more versatile than Denzel? If anything I would say they are maybe on the same level. Now Don Cheadle, he's more versatile than both combined.

When was the last time Denzel did anything where he wasn't waving a gun? Remember the Titans?

I said Denzel is the better actor overall, but recently he's been trying to recreate the "success" of Training Day to no avail.

I remember Cheadle was on the Daily Show after Hotel Rwanda came out and Jon Stewart asked him about his role and Cheadle made some crack that the only reason he got it was because Will Smith was booked solid. :lol

Remember in the late '90 how he kept talking about in interviews for a while about how the gov had created aids to keep the black man down or something?

That was so weird.

wtf?

I don't remember that:lol

I've heard that argument before (lolx100) but not from him

I still think I-Robot is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. I cant believe so many people didn't like that movie. Also thought the Wild Wild West was pretty damn good so Will is ok in my book.

I actually liked both of those movies too but they are definatly not popular on GAF.

Holy crap whats with all the Will Smith hate? Jeez, hes not crazy, hes not a pyscho, hes not an arrogant prick, and yet people still manage to hate him?

Will Smith is the man and i was seriously disappointed he didnt win best actor for Pursuit, but from what i hear Forest Whitaker deserved it as well.(havnt seen Last King of Scottland)

I don't hate him but he's certainly not a turn on to me when I see him in a movie. To me he's a very bland actor who picks somewhat boring and safe flicks to star in. Personally I don't really care about what an actor is like in his personal life but what he brings to a film. Russell Crowe seems like a giant dick. Someone you wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with, but for me he's always compelling in his films in a way that Will Smith has never been for me.

I prefer Denzel myself to Will Smith by a wide wide margin.

It's great to see a black man be seen in such a light. Now lets hope he can win a best male actor oscar award sometime in life. I love Will Smith.

Ergh, I hope you're not holding your breath.

whenever i think of will smith, these lines just replay in my head:

will smith said:
now honey honey come ride
DKNY
all up in my eye
you gotta
Prada
bag with alotta
stuff in it
and then most of his credibility disappears

I really shouldn't like Will Smith at all, but I do for some reason. He needs to be given a defining role sometime, similar to John Goodman's part in The Big Lebowski.

I dont see whats wrong with saying will smith is the most powerful actor in hollywood. His films are popular, he's a likable person and he's a decent actor. Im sure the majority of people you ask will say that they like will smith.

If there was ANYONE else in that role, I bet it doesn't even do half. 298 is ****ing amazing for that movie.

True. It was also really pushed by Oprah. And then of course it had Smith's illiterate son (did you see him and Lil Miss Sunshine struggling with the fundementals at the Oscars lol) too. Recently rather positive movies helmed by blacks have been making big bucks. Someone needs to tell Cuuurtis people are tired of his brand of cinema

My problem with Will Smith is that he can be such a damn screen ham. Unless it's a specific type of role, he always has to inject his patented "Hey i'm Will 'cocky'n'phunny' Smith" schtick into it. I can't stand to watch Independence Day these days, outside of the mocking capacity, mostly due to that.
