Will Sony Attempt To Rival The Xbox Elite Controller?

What do you think?

If so, what revamps or additions would you like to see?

--------

Honestly, I would just love to pay a premium for a controller of good build quality for my PS4.

I would definitely like to see a second iteration of the controller, one with better battery life and build quality. Wouldn't pay more than 60 for it though.

they just need to improve their build quality. it's shit. to be fair, tho, my second, non-launch controller seems to hold up better.

why would they? I dont see the point, I thought the Elite controller was more for PC tho

Whaaaa? Why would it be 'more for PC'? Half the point of the Elite controller is that it enables you to have access to extra buttons that don't necessitate moving your fingers off the aiming and movement inputs. That's been an option on PC for years and years and years. It's more for competitive games like Halo 5 and Battlefield played on Xbox One. If you want a long lasting and customizable PC controller, sure, I could see purchasing this for PC specifically, but the Elite controller's main functions and advantages are pretty much better achieved with a decent mouse and keyboard set in the context of PC gaming.

Doubtful.

The DS4 is already pretty much the ideal controller, sans battery life. I don't see the need to release an overpriced 'Elite' version.

It's a terribly cheap feeling and fairly fragile controller with shoddy rubber tops and sticks that wear down with speed. I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting a better PS4 controller. It might be ideal in form factor, to some, but that's about it.

Nah I doubt it. My launch DS4 started to fail on me for whatever reason. Besides that its a good controller. Microsoft has more goin on with Windows 10 so thats probably the main reason for the controller along with gaming. Sony wont do anything i think. too busy with Warpheous.

These are two different companies with different strategies and overall goals for the industry. They are not going to try to one-up each other in every situation.

I need a Mountain Dew cup holder and Doritos Dust Vacuum™ on my controller /s

Not necessarily an answer to MS's elite controller, but I'd like a new PS4 controller with way more battery life and maybe better build quality.

I wish they would at least make a second iteration that doesn't have cheap rubber thumb sticks and bad battery life

It would be nice to see a midrange controller that's higher quality but doesn't cost $180

I just can't justify spending almost 200 after tax on a single controller

I don't really see a reason. It's such a specific need case with such a high price, it's not necessary that they need to counter it.

Sonys never really been interested in competitive gaming and I feel that's the crowd the Elite controller is aimed at. So I doubt it.

However I would like a better built DS4.

To be honest, I'd rather they just improve the Share/Options buttons (make them easier to find and press. See the Start button change on the Vita 2000 for a good example), keep improving the rubber on the analogs, and add more battery life.

The changes above shouldn't require a new model name, so it would just be a new version of the current DualShock 4.

I seriously hate the Share and Options button.

Not for the market it's for

Nope. They probably see that Scuf has one for the PS4 already, so no point really.

I wish though they expanded on the button remapping. Just go full on with it.

1. Allow multiple profiles to be switched on the fly.

2. Can they change deadzones in a program?

Just more ways to configure the controller.

I doubt it, that Elite controller is a very specific enthusiast/connoisseur type of product. The DS4 could use a nice upgrade in materials, but at as a permanent upgrade to the product line, not a pricey enthusiast model.

Price tag is ridiculously high but these controllers are more meant for pro or super players who prefer quality/comfort/advantage. The Elite allows people to hot swap convex and concave sticks, rapid fire buttons, better triggers and paddle triggers on the back, custom button mapping. I can easily see pros who use SCUF or custom controllers want one.

For Sony, it could be better just revising their current one. Stronger and better joystick texture/build quality, removal of useless LED, add larger battery etc. Now that they have CoD and are dominant in the US maybe they can start looking toward the eSports and gaming scene which has primarily utilized Xbox 360/Xbox controllers etc.

I'd pay an extra 10-15 bucks more for a DS4 without the lightbar, actual good sticks, and decent battery life (though that comes with taking out the light ar)

I'd happily pay for a PS4 controller with a clicky d-pad.

Never really understood this clicky dpad thing. I'd happily pay for one that wasn't sharp as fuck though. The PS4 dpad is great for a lot of things but constantly running your thumb across it for fighting games is not one of them.

I doubt it. I imagine they'll leave that to third parties.

And even better build quality, you'd think if they'd do it anywhere its with the anniversary controller.

I don't play games to a degree that I need a modifiable controller, but as far as improvements I would take better battery life. That's my only real complaint with that controller.

Really?

Interesting. The one that came with the launch one was pretty smooth on the edges for me.

I hope so.
Better battery. Better stick material. Better materials in general. Better build quality. Better button placement. Better form factor.

Simply bifurcating the shoulder buttons would create a better controller.

There is so much room to improve the DS4. Tired of getting the same 'perfect' controller because the form factor is familiar. I'm sure there are a few frustrated designers getting tired of being bound to that thing. Sell it at a premium. Hell, launch the Kickstarter at Gamescom.
