Will Sony find out?

Will PlayStation keep its size no matter what they do?

Believe it or not, even people who are staunchly digital only have benefited from the mere existence of physical games.

So your idea is that people loved the IDEA of physical games but in the end they never bought them?

Doesn't seem logical to me
That's not my point. Tons of console players buy both physical and digital games... Even if physical is not dominant, it still affects how people value consoles.

I hate to to be the one that is defending Sony... but the full price of a game on PSN and Steam is basically the same... You should exclude sites that sell steam keys for this comparison (or root for sites the sells PSN keys to appear).

Dont get me wrong, im pissed as anyone else... but the general consumers clearty are going to this direction :-(

But if Sony wants to compete with Steam, and I'm not even going to mention the fact you don't even have to use Steam on the PC while you don't have a choice on PlayStation, they need to provide a service that is even remotely as good. Right now, it's not even close.

And the public is stupid, but not that stupid. You keep doing away with things that made consoles make sense, like price and ease of use, and eventually people will just balk at it.

I think they will be okay ,but they are going to feel it for sure.

Nintendo is being set up pretty well though.. $500 console, same games, physical media, and already a massive success out the gate.

Sony better have something rally great launching with ps6. like ps2 level line up.

People will bitch about this, but in the end they will swallow the pill if enough exclusive games will come out they cannot play anywhere else. People are big with words but small with actions.

different time though, in 2013 console games are mostly sold in physical (like 85%+), now it's below 10%~15% on PlayStation, under 10% on XBOX, and Nintendo still 40%~50% games sold in physical (if you include game-key card, the physical ratio will be higher, nintendo themself consider game key card as digital sale). also Sony alreay cut the blue-ray disc line only reserve some for game disc produce, manufactuering has cost (uncontrol consider complex market situation vs ditigal game)

PC in 2013 has 8% in physical, now full digital.

It's a industry trend, just like other entertainment, digital format become domiant.

No. If you're the only bakery in the village, enough people will still buy your bread even if you lick it in front of them and double the price.

PlayStation will be fine. I don't rate a number of their decisions this generation, but on the whole they've made more money & profits this gen then all gens combined... and they barely had to do anything. The 'competition' has been scoring own goals for the best part of 15 years, so Sony don't really have to try.

The vast majority of people don't give a flying fuck about digital only consoles and no discs. Ask any Gen Z or Alpha, they don't care. They turn on the console, play any game they want.

If convenience was such a problem, the market would respond in kind. So far it hasn't.

I refer everyone to Amazon, circa 1996-2026

I honestly doubt it. Any decline will be blamed on the cost of hardware which will be blamed on the cost of components, and the managers will just shake their heads, axe as many creatives as it takes to get to a decent margin, and wash their hands of all guilt.

They should find out but likely wont. Gaming is just too popular now and the brainless mainstream masses will ensure that toxic practices wont effect sonys botton dollar due to a lack of will or care.

Absolutely nothing will happen to Sony. They don't give a fuck about you or customers because the consoles keep selling and even though most of their games this generation are dull and boring and bland it still sells.

Spider-Man 2 has sold like 12M+, Ghost of Yotei nearly 5M. GoW L is also going to pull numbers.

Sony has done all sorts of extreme anti-consumer stuff and nobody really cares.

> Stopped Physical Disc
> Shut down D2, fired the team
> Removed movies without compensation
> Increased hardware prices
> Stopped PC releases
> Last week they said it's still confident on GaaS
> Dynamic Store Pricing
> Console as a Service/Rent a PS5 Pro

Do I need to say more? Sony knows the player base is super loyal and doesn't give a fuck.

Sony players love mashing X for Spider-Man to lift fallen debris and save people ( cue epic sound ).

Nothing will change. Stop caring about Sony, stop these shitty console wars.

As always remember PCMasterRace is always going to be the king.

Vote with your wallet is always the best policy, they can have the media and socials do their bidding all they like, it won't matter if the consumer won't spend the money.

If this is how it's going to be and with the prices along with it, the industry better start aiming for a higher consistency in better quality because I can't see some consumers tolerating some of the shit that gets put out and the media antics along with it.

I sure hope that this no physical BS coupled with crazy PS6 pricing makes them take a hit. But people are dumb so … that's unlikely.

Hey Sony:

Americans have a funny saying about doing something wrong and face the consequences of their actions. Xbox did found out in 2013, and when they bought Activlizzard, and then later found out that Netflix wasn't a viable business plan in this industry. Nintendo found that the casual customer of the Wii wasn't really loyal or returning. Nobody is above bad managing decisions. Will PlayStation be?
They did that because of their old age, don't call the younger guys and girls losers cause you really need them.

The future is bright! Intergalactic Bald Chick, God of War Laundry, Horizon Zero Diet. People will forget all about physical media and $1000 consoles with such offerings.

They don't have to find out because there's no direct competition (for now). People say they will try to compete directly with Nintendo with some handheld, but it is not unlikely that Sony will get butt fucked by both their own incompetence and Nintendo.

On the positive side, if Sony do indeed get butt fucked, maybe this will finally cause the retarded management of Sony to fire Hulst and other executives.

They've created a self fulfilling prophecy already.

Somebody in those building have decided my "customer since 1995" money is no longer worth pursuing. The reality is I have more money to spend on the hobby than ever and less motivation than ever to do so. So they've abandoned my dollars completely unnecessarily, in my opinion, to fund nonsense that hasn't paid off for them.

What's saved them is everyone else is making the same or worse stupid mistakes - so they've succeeded by default in the console space up until this point. Nintendo I'm sure has benefited and there's room for more benefiting.

Next gen for Sony will be determined by price (their battle with hardware costs) and whether XBOX offers any meaningful competition.

The other issues seem to pale into insignificance if we're 2-3 years in and they're trapped at $800+

This decision is unpopular; all it would take is for a company to capitalize on this mistake by Sony, the problem is that the market is acting cowardly. So, until a new challenger consortium emerges, we'll be relying on Sony—though not me; I buy digital games on PC for cheap and don't pay to play online.

So the problem is the price, not the plastic disc that spins in the console, right???

The objective reality is most people outside these forums vastly prefer the convenience of digital. Having only digital games is not going to affect their bottom line at all. It probably makes things a lot easier for their portable coming out.

The costs of their upcoming consoles are way more concerning than this. Physical media is just not relevant to them anymore.

I have news about the median age on GAF for you…

Heh, no, I know it. We're all old as dry fucks here.

But if you are asking why so many people are PlayStation gamers rather than PC gamers, the answer is largely because it's what they grew up with.

It's also because they want to play on a TV rather than sitting for hours upright on a desk chair, so there that too. But even there,, a big part of wanting to only couch is because, again, they old.

(PS gamers also sometimes still plan their console buying choices around an idea lingering in their heads of inviting friends over and playing together. Which they never do, because everyone they know, again, old old old.)

No sir! Full Game Sales ONLY

image.png

I hate this move because I prefer physical games, but I understand the many reasons why they're doing it. Consumers have shot themselves in the foot due to convenience. It's the same thing for other forms of entertainment. People like things cheap, but they like convenience more.

So the problem is the price, not the plastic disc that spins in the console, right???

For me the problem is choice. I was fine with their closed box because I could buy the discs and if I was unsure on a game I could wait and get it on sale, or buy it day one and sell it on if I didn't care for it.

I can somewhat get a lot of that on PC, because it's an open platform. On a digital only PlayStation, the only choice is PlayStation, and they will set the prices high and never budge them.

Also I do like having an actual collection. I have a gripe with pc and not having a physical collection, but the openness of the platform is enough to help outweigh that enough to where it's fine I guess.

I wonder if Xbox going the opposite direction and doubling down on physical and special physical releases; could help them or give them an edge. Probably not since physical game sales are really down, year after year.

I just love the idea of Xbox going full green box again and embracing the collecting element of gaming... Maybe I'm being nostalgic and unrealistic here.

Steam changed console game delivery and ownership from physical to digital?

The Wire Wow GIF by Wahala Room
I think his point is did PC find out when steam pushed that industry change? Not really it still did well despite discs no longer being offered in stores.

I personally think it will hurt them in some ways and save them in others.
