Will Sony find out?

Will PlayStation keep its size no matter what they do?

Find out? They already found out. That almost all of their customers are digital at this point. Consumers voted for this with their wallets.

I'm disappointed this is happening already. It feels like a gut punch, especially for fans of 4k blu rays. But this was always the end game for everyone given how much digital has grown over the years. If anyone thinks Nintendo will save them, they need to wake up. Game key cards are basically a code in a box. The days of being able to have a full game on disc or a card and not have to download from a server will be a thing of the past.

Unless they offer equal quality to 4k discs, physical will last much longer for movies.

Also because of the fact you need 7 different subscriptions to watch everything. Completely different from music and games

Given how little 4k blu rays sell, they probably aren't long for this world either. Even more worrisome is the lack of 4k player manufacturers. Sony and Panasonic haven't updated their models in years but it didn't matter since you could always fall back on the ps5 and presumably the ps6. Until now...

Play Station is Sony's core division and what helped the company pull ahead since every other division was struggling. Xbox has been able to fail continuously for years because of the MS wallet. Sony doesn't have that. If Play Station goes sideways…..
Sure, but Sony's only direct competitor is Microsoft, and most people do buy digital already so hard to say how much this will damage Sony.

It kills my interest in their next console because I've bought next to nothing on PSN, but they could still be the multi-plat console box for a lot of people.

Sony will make the current drive compatible with PS6 anyway for backwards compatibility. Remember that Sony has a movie studio too and they sell BD 4K

That's anything but guaranteed.

Sony can have a movie studio but the sales of 4K blu ray still has to justify its existence. People love to clutch their pearls over physical media ownership, but they completely ignore the only way left to fully own your movies.

What's the lie?

Hows a shitty code in the box the same as actually own a cartridge which you can get cheaper, lend a friend and sell to other people.

I don't understand how gaf doesn't get this, PlayStation is untouchable. They are the extreme market leader, no one is close….they could have announced "no more physical games after this month" and it wouldn't change a thing.

I'm on steam. I really don't think we had much of a choice. When I got MGS V just a few months after my Witcher 3 collectors box I had to realize well fuck, I just bought a cd key in a steel case and quickly this just became the standard.
Not that I like it, yet rather it's not like I'm gonna give up gaming because of this. Not having to store my 2000+ mostly steam games physically is not a bad thing. We PC gamers have been already conditioned to this for a decade at least.
I get why this is bad because you should always have a choice.
But what can you do really? Though removing stuff from you library sucks hard (like the news of removing owned movies earlier just this week), I guess it comes down to trust as well at the end of the day. Over 21 years I do came to trust Steam and Gog as they never ever game me a reason not to, I guess we'll see where this leaves me in the long run. Maybe it all comes down do this whether you trust Sony or expect them to fuck you over down the line.

nothing burger. Sure some people
Will be upset and will complain on social media like it makes any difference. Steam is the biggest store in existence and I have t seen one physical box copy of any game, nor any laws enacted to allow me to sell my digital rights, nor any protection for when games get pulled like say PURE. It hasn't started a firestorm on social media and forums that pc owners only get digital files.

I don't spend my time worrying about this crap anymore. Even if you bought physical media you can't do shit with it when every game needs patches and updates constantly. So even if you could slide in a disk you're playing a broken outdated game.

Why is everyone comparing this anti consumer situation to pc.

Just stop...

Yes, because a game totally can't be removed from Nintendo's servers or delisted from their store...

If the actual game data isn't on the card, you don't own it, period. You have a plastic IOU.

Nothing is to big to fail !! Sony aren't really innovators anymore in the gaming space , they've basically just been chasing trends and failing miserably . Nintendo has retaking the console lead and steam is in a league of their own

When the physical people can't play their games on ps6 but they wanna play next gen games , nothing will hold them back from going elsewhere

I expect that, by and large, GAF does get this. We're well aware that we are a small enthusiast board, not representative of the buying population at large or trend setters. And most recognize that if Sony does fail to reach a broad enough audience, it will be down to hardware prices moreso than the loss of physical media.

But just because you can't change them doesn't mean you have to keep eating shit. It's not a boycott, it's just being fed up.

And Sony's market leadership (at least when compared to MS alone) hasn't stopped them from making boneheaded moves that have come back to bite them in very recent memory. They've been very profitable this generation, but they've also burned a lot of money on failed products and iffy acquisitions. They'll probably be fine, as you say, but nothing is guaranteed, and if they should falter next generation with a new "$599" moment, the schadenfreude will be plenty and loud.

Can't vote yet but my guess is that they will be fine, and imo that sucks. Physical media is nice to have even though most my games this generation have been digital. Hate that we continue to move in the direction of "you own nothing and you will be happy" future.

"BBM is too big to fail, Blackberry is king"

"The 'Wii'?!? Pffffffffffft looks like a dildo"

"Who wants to buy stuff through the internet???"

"Swiss watches are sooooo far ahead of quartz watches"

"PlayStation can't be beat, Xbox 360 doesn't have a chance"

"Blockbuster is #1, lol Netflix!"

"Who the hell wants a Samsung tv? BRAVIA all the way"

"Yahoo > everyone"

"iTunes can't be beat, streaming won't take off"

"A touchscreen phone locked to AT&T? Good luck hahahaha"

The list goes on. If there's one consistent truth throughout history is that arrogance in business can and often does lead to catastrophic results.

Sony is about to face to biggest boycott in history of entertainment industry and biggest class suit non stop left and right. Well deserved sony. Ryan and Hulst are trash, they started this and it will end pretty bad. Ps6 a full digital will surely be doa. Gta6 and other digital only aaa games will also feel this boycott. They reap what they sow.

Sony find out? Nah. They wouldn't make a decision like this without long-term data showing that the vast majority of sales are digital (which they are)

The only people going to find out are internet nerds that the general gaming populace doesn't give a fuck about their physical game collection or rEaL oWnErShIp

Sony's downfall will be when they made bad decision like wasting their money on firewalk and bungie, not the switch to all digital.

because just one look at steam then you'll have your answer

I have been 99% digital only for over a decade. The few times I've paid for physical it was for a collector's ed. thing. Last few years even those have shipped...without the actual game.

Mainstream gamers gave the signal to Sony that it would be fine in the end, since COVID digital sales are sky high. It's a nothingburger but I love to see the overreactions

They won't feel it until 2028, but if Nintendo can keep the Switch 2 MSRP to $550, I don't think the average normal consumer is going to be able to justify a $1299 PS6 purchase. I think you're going to see a massive swing to Nintendo as an alternative.
A bunch of people are switching from ps5 to switch 2? Why would they go backwards?

In the long run they won't unfortunately. Even then, they can give false hope by changing that and backtrack after selling enough pieces of shit.

They don't, that's why they're lambs headed for slaughter with digital currency that they can't buy what they want for thought crimes.

Because the Switch 2 will be the only current gen console in 2028 with some kind physical media, and the PS6 is probably going to be around $1300, which for most normal consumers is unaffordable, especially when you can get a Switch 2 for $500.

Like anything else, we will see in a couple of years when digital is the main thing. I do wonder how retail can survive without selling games and only consoles.

Retailers famously earned about as much on a single game sale as they did on an entire console sale. Console hardware margins are razor thin, like 2% - 5%, usually accepted to be around $10 - $20 at most. Console margins will have go WAY up if they want retailers to carry them, which will drive already wildly inflated consumer prices even higher unless Sony thinks everybody's suddenly going to buy from their shitty PS Direct store--which simply ain't gonna happen outside of the hardest core preorder crowd.

The scariest part about this, is PS will do just fine...the numbers are on their side with this whole digital thing. I really wish we were the majority here, but I don't see them being that hurt by this, even if all of us literally stopped buying Playstation.

Nintendo will follow, MS will follow and thats it...

I won't quit gaming because of this, but I don't know if I can do the Nintendo, PC and PS combo if they are just going to do this whole digital only thing

Welcome to the digital gulag and dictatorship. I was always against buying digital on PS Store and during the time I had PS3 and PS5, I only bought extremely few digital games (Vanillaware ones) cuz physical alternative wasn't available or the price of it was too high cuz of how rare physical copy is.

And these greedy and braindead motherfuckers trying to win people over who chose PC after Sony started porting their games to play better versions of them? Well, now they just made sure that it'll never happen. Can't wait to see Sony's downfall - there's no other way for it to end.
