Will the tech world ignore Dr. Dre's history of beating women?

It wasn't a mistake. It was deliberately calculated move. He didn't hit her in a fit of anger (which wouldn't have been acceptable either FYI), but he deliberately sought her out and beat the shit out of her while her bodyguard threatened anyone who helped her with a gun, and then after she escaped he followed her into the bathroom and continued beating the shit out of her.

Then he bragged about it, never apologized, never came back and said hitting women is bad, and kept making jokes about it for the next 20 years.

There's zero evidence that he's changed. But you're willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he made Still DRE. Got it.

People kill me with this bullshit.

You're so concerned about Dre's past (that was settled out of court decades ago)? Then where the fuck were you BEFORE he signed this deal with Apple? You're SO worried about ethics, but you had no problems with Apple signing supply deals with fucking FOXCONN--whose employees were literally killing themselves over their poor work conditions, all so they could sell you slightly cheaper (for them) iPhones.

You're SO bothered, but you're just now opening your mouth about it? What changed? What's different now? Another black man got rich? Can't have that...

Seems utterly irrelevant to the topic, but he also owned up to it (in song, 'it's getting better') and tried to stop being a dick. Where's the evidence that Dre did the same?

Uh the fact he made a song and hasn't beat a woman in 20 years and his record has been spotless?

People kill me with this bullshit.

Basically this.

Lets see:

1. I've posted on this forum before about Dre beating women well before that deal was made

2. I'm not sure why you are assuming I have no problem with Foxconn. You just pulled that out of nowhere.

3. I made a comment like two days ago about how Bill Murray's history of domestic abuse. Maybe it's...and this is a crazy thought here...that I have a problem with dudes who beat up women? You have about as much evidence that I am mad a black person got rich as you do that I am totally ok with Foxconn.

Yeah what he did was wrong.

But isn't there a certain point that you stop hounding someone for a crime they committed? I mean it isn't like he raped or murdered someone. He hit them.

At a certain point you have to let things go. That's another problem with our society is that we believe people should be punished forever for mistakes they've made.

I don't think Dre should necessarily get kicked out of Apple, but I at least want to know what his feelings are about the Dee Barnes incident now. Obviously he regrets it because he had to pay up, but does he actually feel bad for what he did to Dee? Her career basically died after that, and for what? I doubt she was even the one responsible for editing in the Ice Cube segment. That's usually the producer's or editor's decision.

So, the fact that Dre:

--Pleaded no contest to the assault charges.
--Served his 2 years probation
--Created a anti-violence PSA
--Settled his lawsuit with Dee
--has lived the 20 years since relatively problem-free

None of that shit matters to you? As far as the law is concerned (hell, as far as Dee is concerned), Dre's done his part. Because he hasn't crawled on his knees before you and given you the full details of the incident while licking the lint from between the cracks of your delicate toes doesn't mean he owes you, or me, or anyone else anything in regards to the Dee Barnes incident.

That's not the same. Dre's actions had a negative impact on people, arguably for the rest of their lives. You don't feel any sympathy for Dee Barnes?

I do. And I think Dr. Dre was an asshole for doing it, and I probably wouldn't want to have Dr. Dre as a friend, or dating my sister, but I just don't think it's anything to lose sleep over. It happened a long time ago, he hasn't had any issues since, and he's been a giant in the tech industry for the last 5 years and nothing has come of this story.

I think Dre is fine , he made mistakes in the past. I remember him saying that the incident that made him leave Death Row was when he witnessed a sound engineer getting beat for rewinding a tape too far.

He wanted to get rid of that gangster life style and has done well because of it.

I think that he deserves to not have this continually hounded on Dre, if this is all true...

Real talk. But oh no, lets not bring up that Apple and Google were fixing wages costing people god knows how much and got a slap on the wrist for it JUST THIS YEAR!

Oh nooooooooo, that would be out of line and offtopic right?

.

A quick post history search shows this isn't true at all.

In 2012 you posted in the 'Dr. Dre's The Chronic came out 20 years ago today.

Also back in 2012 you posted in the "Highest Paid Actors in Hollywood; Who Needs Katie Holmes?!" thread.

Neither of your posts had anything to do with Dre's past. In fact the first time you mention Dre's past coincidentally is on May 10 of this year in the "Dr. Dre: The first Billionaire in Hip Hop" thread.

So again, where the fuck were you before this deal went down? Dude has been making headphones for about what? 5 years now, yet you only felt to enlighten the world once you heard he might have a deal with apple?

Fuck outta here.

Pls.try.harder.

Wait..your telling me a guy who made some of the most aggressive and violent music of the 90's and grew up in Compton performed acts of violence many years ago?

It doesn't surprise me that it was settled out of court...that's how these things usually work with celebrities. The fact that he did an anti-violence PSA that he was ordered to do by court of law doesn't really say much.

You're also leaving out the fact that a few months after that he put out Niggaz4Life, which is one of the most misogynist rap albums of all time (which is really saying something) and had shit on it including an an entire song where he fantasizes about killing women.

And then of course there's the guilty conscience line...do you honestly thing that if Dre was even a little bit serious about violence against women that he would be joking about it ten years later?

I don't know if he still beats women or not, but he clearly does not give a shit that he pretty much ruined that girls life. That is all I'm saying.

Does Dr. Dre need to start a foundation about violence against women or something? Or is he just eternally a piece of shit to you?

It doesn't surprise me either. But the matter WAS settled...20 fucking years ago. And I could see if Dre was still being rumored to be a violent person (towards men OR women) but he really hasn't. Considering Dre's one of the richest, most influential people in Hip-Hop/Urban culture, he's kept a relatively low profile since those days. It's a rare occurrence, but sometimes people DO earn the right to let the past just be the past.

Digging up this ancient drama really just seems like reaching of the most desperate sort. I'm convinced this has to be one of 50 Cent's many GAF accounts.

EDIT: Also, sweetie you need to go ahead and take that L Angelus handed out.

I think the "he hasn't had another incident in 20 years" is a semi-valid argument. But, considering how misogynistic 2001 is (which came out in 1999), I get the impression that the real reason he's stayed out of trouble is to avoid more lawsuits. Though, hell, even that album's old now.

I guess in my mind the '90s Dr. Dre wasn't that long ago, since so many of the albums he produced in that decade are classics. I also think it's sad that Dee Barnes was never able to get her career back together. Watching some of the Pump it Up videos on youtube, she seemed like she had a promising career ahead of her, and I think that Dr. Dre is at least partly responsible for killing it. Meanwhile Dre becomes accepted into the corporate world.

Not sure where the idea is coming from that this thread was racially motivated. I think it's inspiring to see a black man go from Compton to Cupertino. Doesn't mean he's above criticism.

S/o to Tatsumaki. We know you know.

It's 1am EST and I should be asleep, yet I read this on MobileGAF. OPs comment is brought to you by the same people who are in PETA. They are still hating on Michael Vick after he served his time and giving back to the community.

I wouldn't waste much time. In their eyes, there's nothing Dr. Dre (short of cancelling the deal) can do to be just a successful business man.

But if this is best you got, godspeed sir. I'd suggest watching your local 10pm news and you'll spot someone worse than him. Either that or go to the front page of HuffPost.

However, now that Dr. Dre is a key player for an international corporation, his past should not be ignored.

Since when do key players in international corporations have to live up to a certain standard??
He's not running any kind of state-office or is a representative for a charity that has to live up to a certain reputation, etc.

that this is an issue thats been brought up at the close of this apple deal is a bit suspicious. if it were something people were constantly on, it would be a bit understandable, but given the reactions many had to this deal, its not hard to think there may be some racial motivations behind it

I didn't dig up anything, I posted in a thread that had already brought it up. I brought up the Dee Barnes thing because the OP didn't mention it and it seemed pretty important given the topic. Would you rather nobody brought up the fact that Dr Dre beat up Dee Barnes in a thread about Dr. Dre's history of beating women? I mean, I'm not sure what you wanted me to do?

I was actually going to make a thread two months ago titled "Dr. Dre is an asshole", discussing all the scummy things he's done, but I didn't get the chance. (That thread was also going to include all the times he's taken exec. producer credit for albums where he didn't produce a single song, the song dedicated to his slain brother that he didn't write or produce, and how he criticized gangsta rap as socially irresponsible, then went right back to it when his record label was failing.)

I get really into music that I like, and learn everything I can about the artists. My opinion of Dre only goes further down the more I learn about him.
