This is the end of the Cloud muhahahahaha

I'll be sure to bring this up at a meeting when some hot shot project manager brings up the Cloud

Funny on-topic story.

Junior year of college me and a buddy rented an apartment together. Now, I had known this guy for 15 years and we were pretty good friends.

First day in the apartment as roommates, he decides to set up his media center through his 360. As the 360 is scanning for images and videos, it pops them up as it continues searching. So, pictures of his mom and sister come up, his labrador, birthday parties, and other pleasant pictures to keep our attention.

Next thing I know, a picture of him holding his erect dick via webcam is displayed front and center with pictures of Sampson playing fetch and his teenage sister blowing out birthday candles lingering in the background.

Stunned silence and awkward laughing by my roommate replace the offending penis and he quickly closes out the media center and instead relied on HDMI from that day forward.

They said Apple securities let people bruteforcing password without locking the access after multiple tries. If so, that's a serious hindsight on Apple's part.

I'd say the one thing that could happen as a result is that people start using things like 1password or fastpass or keypass more often, but it doesn't really change the notion that a lack of caring about your data is how this stuff gets stolen in the first place. IMO: the Phil Fish Doxxing attack from last week is way more important than this stuff because it raises the issue of places that are supposed to be secure like DropBox being open enough to break into and for a person's life to essentially be shut down from 1 file being taken, but that entire process being seen as a perfectly safe and acceptable solution.

The idea of the faith that we have to put into corporations to keep our data private from nonpaying customers (because we know the paying ones will still get it) is a scary thing. So we just do what we can, try things that make sense. Hope it all work out, and hope that common sense keeps truly sensitive material away from prying eyes.

Also, lets say for example this guy did it in a country where no law exists against something like this, what then?

I don't think this has been validated, but one of the victims claimed that the pictures obtained had been deleted. So either the attack had been happening for a while (before they were deleted), or they were somehow able to obtained deleted information from the cloud.

If the latter is true, Apple (or whoever was the cloud provider at the time) would have some serious explaining to do.

Security is pretty best effort. It's kinda hard to see these things until breaches happen, unless you have continuous audits of every facet of your network/software happening year round

EDIT: Oh, in relation to non deleted deleted items? yeah thats fucked up

You gotta have a lot of confidence to post a nude dick picture when your last name is Sprout.
It's Sprouse

You can say that, but on the other hand, its not really their fault. Having read a bit about this whole ordeal, it looks like allot of the material isn't all grabbed from icloud, some have even been retrieved by people hacking hardware like pc's, or apple computers, cellphones from all ranges, etc. from certain celebrities, and these images have been floating around in an underground collection circle for some while now.

This whole victim blaming is crazy and needs to stop.

People do these things in private, expecting this stuff to remain private. Stealing is stealing, and you can't excuse hackers from guilt because the means that these images have been retrieved where easy.

If I lock the door and people break in and steal all my shit, how would that be my fault? Would you like people to live in vaults?

I absolutely agree with you. I'm not victim blaming at all. The cynic in me just thinks that people will go back to being lax and it will happen again. The blame is 100% on the hackers. People should be allowed to take pictures of themselves if they want and not worry that some shit head is going to expose them on the internet. I'm not blaming young people, I just know it'll happen again, sooner or later.

Hopefully more control over our cloud data. I mean, complete control. It's super fucking annoying how apple locks tht shit down once it's "up there."

I find apples attitudes towards cloud data management confusing and bordering contemptuous.

More like you storing your important shit in a communal storage where the guy handling the gate can let strangers in if they sound like you.

Now obviously they didn't expect this to happen, but this should be a lesson for people: if you want something to stay private, don't sync it online. There are so many failure points from technical issues to good old human incompetence.

Oh god, similar thing happened to me.
I rented a place with two of my best friends at the time and when if finally came time to move out we all just sat around watching movies we found on his old camcorder. Was fun until one of us got the bright idea to plug the camcorder directly and see what was on the last tape. It was video if a St Patrick's Day party for a good 15 minutes then it switched to video his boyfriend's ass and a lot of moaning. That shit went off quick.

I thought the latest theory of this whole scandal said that the cloud service had almost nothing to do with the leak. There was an inside trading ring of celebrity nudes that went south.

People need to understand what happens when you put things online in another company's hands. Was this an invasion or privacy and should it have been unexpected? Yes. However, they still uploaded nude pictures and videos of themselves on the internet. I hope this brings to light what the dangers of cloud storage are. Personally, I never would back things up using an online drive, regardless of what it is.

Apple will have to make some statement on this eventually.

I always thought it was shitty when these leaks came out, but starting with this one, I'm starting to see how disgusting it is to even look at the photos.

I mean, sure, there are some of these women that I'd like to see naked, but it would make me feel like a bad person to look and take advantage of these leaks. I used to hate the leakers but still look at the photos out of morbid curiosity, but I don't think I can even do that anymore.

It really is messed up.

what if everyone were just random Joes working at Google/Apple/The NSA?

To be fair I think Justin Bieber was on the rumored list but nothing came out of that. Certainly female dominated though.
You sure? I saw a photo of a Bieber selfie where you could see his penis mixed in with all the other celebrity leaked photos. Naturally people didn't repost it as much as Jennifer Lawrence or Kate Upton.

Why did all discussion on the previous threads were locked?

Did EvilLore think he could get sued if the pictures were posted online?
They did say they would be taking legal action against anyone who posts those pictures.

They devolved into mudslinging shitshows. One of them had an argument for several pages where one poster kept trying to equate this leak to child porn.

Nothing. It sucks what happened but it's weird how overtly concerned we get when it happens to celebrities. It's such a weird worship culture.

These are rarified individuals who will never need to worry about food, shelter, job prospects, if they're wise with their resources.

Again, I'm sure the FBI is on the case, but I just find it funny that people are so concerned about these embarrassed millionaires. They'll be fine. And the leak will help others to enable more secure protocols, such as two-factor.

Meanwhile, the police in Ferguson have be violating human right ad infinitunum, the job market sucks for the lower class, Russia is acting is a fool. the Middle East is still a mess, etc.

I would like to say yes but people are going to forget and the same thing will happen again.

Personally I never trusted saving my data in the Cloud and always kept it with it me where I had full complete control over it.

Personally I trust my data to the cloud because I'm less likely to have regular and comprehensive local backups if left to me.

Hopefully people realize posting pictures of themselves they want kept private on the internet is a stupid thing to do.
STOP victim blaming!!! I should be able to do whatever I want. It's not my fault there are bad people in this world. You should be blaming them, not us! I'm tired of victim blaming culture!

Posting provocative pictures of yourself on the Internet or using an online networked service to back them up is up to you but you do need to be aware there is an inherent risk to it.

The blame lays squarely on the hackers/thieves involved but you can't ignore the risk your taking by doing so. Basically you can do what you want but ignoring the fact there are bad people out there isn't advisable. Take caution.

Victim blaming culture is really bad in general but using that as an excuse to ignore advice that can be preventative is dangerous.

You should leave your door open at night and then complain when you get robbed.
