Will* there ever be a better comic book movie than The Dark Knight?

It was excellent at conveying the feel of the 90s Punisher comics. I'm not sayin' it's Shakespeare, but it's best at being a comic book movie. Accurate and wonderful, and obvious the director did their homework and did it all right.

Great movie to me. Batman sucks, unless it's the 60s. That's right.

What does this mean, though? Are you saying that Punisher: War Zone did a great job at capturing the pulpy feel of 90s Punisher comics? Because that seems to be what they were going for, but they missed the mark quite drastically in some aspects (i.e. the aforementioned Jigsaw portrayl).

Additionally, it's funny to hear Nolan's Batfilms to be criticized as "not comic book movies" when his films borrowed more thematically from various Batman comics than practically any other superhero movies borrowed from their respective characters. Batman: Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, and The Long Halloween are comics, people, and they were just as dark and gritty as the Nolan films.

Yes, it is called Batman Begins.

First post nails it. Also, The Winter Soldier. And Dredd was superb at capturing that character.

Ledger's Joker is amazing, but The Dark Knight was always kind of a mess plot-wise.

Edit: If we count animated, I agree with the post by guek below that mentions Mask of the Phantasm.

TDK is a great film but Spider-man 2 and Winter Soldier top it and Mask of the Phantasm blows all three out of the water. All of Nolan's batman movies have too much dumb shit hidden in the crevices.

It's been mentioned several times, but I'm gonna throw in another vote for Dredd.

Also, even though TDK has some fantastic elements (Ledger and the score in particular), I actually think Batman 1989 is a much more consistent and enjoyable film.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying, for the most part. It toes the line between being faithful to the comics and there was quite a bit of executive meddling going on but the director fought it - a LOT. Highly recommend listening to the Punisher War Zone episode of How Did This Get Made if you've never heard it - they have the director on and she talks at length about why certain things in that movie were the way they were and what she couldn't fight. It's a really engaging listen.

Right, just assume anybody carrying that opinion is trolling.

You requiring an explanation is a huge part of what brings down Nolan's films. They are explanation-porn written for an audience that cannot think for themselves.

Layered, gritty, grounded does not equate with "better".

i think you miss-interepted my post, I meant rather than me troll this opinion I meant can someone explain their train of thought behind this opinion

It's the best realistic interpretation of a superhero mythology sure. But in terms of a comic book "feel" it's almost like Nolan's ashamed of the source material.

Spiderman 2
TDK

You need real directors to make good comic book movies, just like in any genre.

Well most of it is bad, you need to pick the good bits from there like in any superhero flick. Try to follow the comics too strickly and you end up with shit.

TDK is one of the most overrated films I've ever seen. Heath's Joker was amazing, but everything surrounding him was beyond mediocre. Bale's performance was embarrassing. It's not even Nolan's best movie, let alone best CBM. Inception is Nolan's best work and I'd even place the uneven but more ambitious Interstellar above TDK.

The current best comic book movie is: The Winter Soldier. Chris Evans is 10x the actor Bale is and the supporting cast was amazing. The action is great, the plot is a solid mix of serious spy espionage & comic book camp.

Also better than TDK:
-the 1st Avengers film
-Spiderman 2 (Raimi version)
-Watchmen
-Guardians of the Galaxy
-Scott Pilgrim

I also enjoyed Man of Steel better than TDK and would rather watch MOS over TDK any day.

Ledger didn't even give the best performance in TDK, that would be Mr Aaron Eckhart.

Fantastic scene.

I like quite a lot of Marvel's stuff, and I too have some problems with Nolan's exposition heavy style, but nothing Marvel has done comes close to this scene.

Well the end of the first Captain America probably comes closest. But even that was fairly contrived.

Please. TWS is my favourite comic book movie and I love Evans as Cap but let's not judge Bale's acting based on his Batman.

For all the acclaim TDK gets, it's not even in my top 10.

That list includes:
1) Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
2) Captain America: The Winter Soldier
3) Hellboy
4) Dredd
5) The Crow
6) Iron Man
7) The Avengers
8) Sin City
9) V for Vendetta
10) Batman '89

That's not even counting the likes of things like Scott Pilgrim, A History of Violence, and other surprising adaptations.

The Dark Knight is my favorite film of all time. I don't see anything topping it, personally, for a long time, but with that being said, I loved The Winter Soldier, and Batman Begins can certainly hold its own.

Dredd people! DREDD!

>:(

2000 A.D. Comics haven't had the same US exposure, so most people previously knew Judge Dredd from the awful Stallone film. The character isn't really a staple in the same way here outside of more dedicated readers.

Thankfully they corrected that with an excellent adaptation that raised more awareness about him.

Why do people hold up those cornball Burton movies as the best? Blows my mind. I liked them as a kid but c'mon, The Dark Knight easily tops all other comic book movies. The whole trilogy probably does.

Dredd
Watchmen
Batman and Robin
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy
Iron Man
Kingsmen

In no particular order.

This is impossible to answer because its all subjective. But if I was to look at the answer in regards to critical/Oscar acclaim, no, I don't think a movie will reach those heights again. A villain winning an Oscar on the current slates? No chance.

The only normal response in this troll bait thread.

I doubt we will see a comic book movie getting the same acclaim or even consideration for best pic. It was lightning caught in a bottle.

In comparison, movies like avengers are just flavor of the month and can easily be replaced with any upcoming marvel movie that does 'entertainment' better. People will talk about them for a while and then forget them once something better comes along.

Any response that doesn't bow down and worship it is troll bait? And just because it got attention from a normally stuffy awards crowd it's somehow unequivocally the best?

Opinions. Winter Soldier, in my opinion, was more faithful to the character of Captain America than TDK was to Batman and especially Dent/Two-Face. WS told a well crafted political/espionage/action thriller, was well acted, and had the best action, tone, and tension of a comic film to date.

TDK had some truly great action set pieces, but on rewatch suffers a lot when Ledger isn't on screen. His performance was amazing in TDK, but any part of it, and especially the plot, is very open to critiquing.

On that I can agree

Nnnngh! Man, even though the CG isn't the best, or the most modern, it just doesn't look bad because Raimi really just embraced the campy comic book style. But also not to the degree that, say, Sin City or 300 goes where it's essentially actors cut out and placed in a cartoon.

Honestly I think if Ledger didn't die he wouldn't have won and might not have even been nominated.
Probably, but no one knows this for sure. But it Doesn't matter; Ledgers performance was objectively legit Oscar worthy. He fucking killed it.

It wasn't merely some pitty prize for a mediocre performance. It was well deserved regardless of circumstances.

You are welcome OP

In two years it won't even be the best Spider-Man anymore. And it's only the best Spider-Man because the other 4 are a bloody ordeal to sit through.

Except the first one.

You and your trust in Marvel

I really enjoyed Dredd. I thought Urban nailed it. The general aesthetic and atmosphere was spot on too. For me personally, it's better.
