I'm talking like a DIE HARD game or a Terminator game being developed by a Japanese company. Is there record of this happening before and when will Japanese companies do it? I think Japanese devs would treat it better than like Eidos or some shit.

Capcom do some stuff like that, Dead Rising and Lost Planet match the "look western, but Japanese" bill.

Lost Planet maybe, but Dead Rising was steeped in Japanese style save/boss/structure - you'd never see an American game with that sort of save system (and if you did, GAF would call it a terrible game :P)

Doesnt seem too bad to me, the rewiever just didnt like the game.

other wise would a western developer make one of those anime/manga dating games? It is a question of the culture in my eyes but theoretically there is no reason why they shouldnt/couldnt make a western style game.

While it doesn't fit in with your scenario perfectly, from the new video trailer, Resident Evil 5 looks totally Western-styled to me. Some of those scenes/camera angles looked very influenced by movies.

Funny how circular the influence is with the RE series...the original game was influenced by horror/thriller movies, and those games influenced the Hollywood RE movies, and now the Hollywood movie influence seems to be back, adding polish to the look of the game.

Apparently someone hasn't played POPEYE the SAILOR by Nintendo for the Famicom

Have we forgotten the NES?
You can probably include the SMS too.

But yeah, this has been ongoing since the early 80's.

I guess it hasn't been as often lately, if anything.

I would like to see the japanese developer handle western game not the western looking game that produced by the japanese.

Just imagine how Capcom handle Tomb Raider or God of War. It could be total different.

I thought God of War felt very Japanese anyway.

Well, we should see how Capcom handles its own version of GTA with No More Heroes. Still very Japanese, but the closest I'm aware of to a proper Japanese GTA.

I dunno, most Japanese companies like European settings for their games,Only Capcom so far got the balls to do western settings.

lol what?

ATLUS DOING WIZARDRY! CATS AND DOGS LIVING TOGETHER!

I'd pay good money for M.U.L.E 2 by Nippon Ichi, where the auction system is now an isometric platformer based on the Nikkei index and you outbid by fighting the gross national product of America.

Tomb Raider needs to come out soon and kick the asses of all the games being described as 'Tomb-Raider meets -------'. The official messageboard is a heartbreaker, though. Threads demanding 'longer and more complex QTEs' and 'MORE vehicle sections plz'. Eidos can make it rock - they just need to concentrate. A 'totally different' Tomb Raider is not what I want, at any rate. They can't afford experiments.

Actually ANY good dev can make a good game based on licenses be it western or eastern ( Riddick, King Kong, Kotor, tons of other star wars games etc ) shitty devs are shitty devs no matter where they are. ( gundam, dbz etc )

in RE4 there is this scene right after Krauser with that laser things. This part was taken from the first RE 1:1. And the second movie took some scene from RE2 1:1 just like 300, which riped the art style and some monsters of God of War 1:1

You know what? By now I'm sure EA at least farms out some games to Tose, and other publishers as well. Tose did mention they did sign more contracts after that mini-"expose" that gamasutra had on them.

What? Europe is not West?

I don't really want Japanese devs to develop games that look like they were produced in the West.

Diversity FTW.

Yeah, Japanese developing games based on Western franchises has gone all the way back to the NES days... remember all those fantastic Capcom Disney games? (DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Willow, etc) Or Sunsoft's Batman? Or Sega's Die Hard Arcade? Wish Japanese devs still did this, at least their licensed games were sometimes pretty good... most Western developers couldn't give a shit about licensed property so they make the game pretty terrible.

And Western devs have tried their hand at the dating sim genre - Sprung and Brooktown High anyone?
