Question:

I have a Windows XP Professional Desktop and a Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Dell Laptop. I want to upgrade to Vista on both, what's the cheapest non-piracy option? Do they no longer have 32-bit and 64-bit OS? Are they all 64-bit?
From the blog of a Microsoft Senior Program Manager:
All Windows 7 editions include both 32-bit and 64-bit regardless of whether you choose to download or the packaged product. So techies, don’t worry, we have you covered

OK, so can I use a single windows 7 product on 2 machines?

I am a XP user on Macbook Pro tempted to upgrade to Windows 7. Reading that website makes me think that it is possible for me to upgrade to W7 following this order of events:

1) backup my XP files
2) de-partition my drive via Bootcamp
3) Re-establish a partition via Bootcamp
4) Insert W7 Upgrade disc in for install
5) During the install, it will ask for a XP disc to verify that I have a legit XP disc (which I do)
6) Install continues with no problem

Hope I am understanding this process correctly ! If not, I guess I will have to purchase the full W7 disc instead of an upgrade W7 disc. Furthermore, I would like to know if I can upgrade to W7 Pro while I have a XP Home disc.

I've had upgrade windows discs before and they just verify you have windows currently installed on a partition. You do not have to insert a disc of a previous version of Windows. Once it verifies you have Windows on a partition you can then delete the old OS and install the new one.

Ah, that's even better ! It also doesn't matter whether I have a Home or Pro version for the upgrade, correct ? I hope I am allowed to upgrade from XP Home to W7 Pro just like that.

No 50% off on Ultimate?

For torrent users, is there a half-open limit on Windows 7?

Bleh. I wanted to get a couple copies of Ultimate. So what is it that I lose out on by going Professional over Ultimate? It's a $20 difference normally. Microsoft's comparison chart pretty much sucks cuz I know for a fact that Home Premium and Professional differ with Remote Desktop but it doesn't list that so clearly there's more stuff missing.

Neowin has a better chart.

Damn, now I have to cancel my Microsoft Store order so I don't have to pay $8 in shipping and taxes, and the store is down.

It's on Amazon:

Home Premium Upgrade

Professional Premium Upgrade

Hmm that I am not sure about. I would think any old installation of XP/Vista will do no matter what flavor you have.

I just pre-ordered Home Premium from Amazon.

Grand total with same-day release date delivery: $55.97

I'm also breaking my decade-long policy of not buying a Microsoft OS until its been on the market at least a year and had time to work out the bugs. I've been beta testing and now running the RC Win 7 for several months now though and its fucking solid.

Damnit I just ordered a netbook from Dell last week and it won't ship for another week. I totally screwed myself out of this one, didn't I?

Can't you cancel it? Or even call Dell and ask them about this to see what they can do?

If my computer didn't suck I'd go for this.

How bad is it? W7 runs on a Netbook so it doesn't take much.

Your sucky computer would probably benefit from it. W7 runs better than XP or Vista would ever dream to on my 5 year old Inspiron 9300 and my Asus EEE 1000H.

P4 1.7, GeForce 4, 1GB 333 RAM

Well here is what Microsoft says the min requeriements are:
  • 1GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
  • 1GB of main memory
  • 16GB of available disk space
  • Support for DX9 graphics with 128MB of memory (for the Aero interface)
  • A DVD-R/W drive

It's "In Production". And I don't see a quick "cancel form". I've fired off an inquiry e-mail. Maybe I'll call them tomorrow...

You wouldn't have any problems even with that amount of RAM. I've usually got Zune, Firefox, Excel, and OneNote open in class on lesser hardware (Integrated GPU and 100mhz less) with no issues.

Regardless I should get one for my notebook first since Vista runs sooooo crappy on it.

Can you share it with another PC or notebook?

I gotta say.. I felt like everything I wanted to do Vista always had some problem with what I was doing.

Windows 7 just leaves me the fuck alone and shit just works lol. I'll definitely be upgrading once this beta ends.

Once again, going to throw out the question incase it was lost.

Can I use a single purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade to upgrade my Windows XP Pro Desktop and Windows Vista Home Premium Laptop?

Just to clearify, you want to know if you can use one W7 Home Upgrade disc on multiple computers and upgrade their OS, right ? I would be interested to know that too.

2 computers, yes.

Why would you be able to use a single license to upgrade two different licenses?

No.

A 1.7GHz P4 is basically equivalent to a 1GHz P3. It's really slow.

I'm not really sure where the Intel Atom architecture stands in comparison to the P3/P4; I was an AMD fanboy back in those days.

Running RC1 right now, so I'm good till March, but I'll probably just pony up for Professional.

Maybe I'll hedge my bet and order home and professional. Not sure if I really need the Professional-only functionality.

Hm, what is this "release date shipping" option on Amazon, I've never seen it before. I mean I know what it IS, it's basically same-day delivery, but why on earth is it three times cheaper than 1-day delivery!

Either way, win! Three copies secured!

They've done it before with some games. I think the reason it's cheaper is because they ship it out before release date instead of shipping it out on release date.

Anyone know what's the difference between VDI Enhancements and Remote Desktop in Windows 7? That seems to be the only feature in Ultimate that stands out to me that I might be interested in. Also are we sure that chart isn't missing any of the other differences?

In for a copy of home premium.

It's $50.. will do everything I need it to and I feel that microsoft deserves some money for this one.

Meh. Vista's not given me any trouble so I'll probably stick with that. Also the Starter version is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Only 3 programs at once?

It's probably gonna be up on MSDNAA (which is how I got Vista), otherwise I would've preordered it. Upgrade for $50 is really nice.
