So I saw this picture and thought that orange looked pretty good. So I went and change to it on my phone (Mozart). However, it looks considerably less orange and more crappy on mine. Which sucks.
Is it the screen or does that photo just make it look better?

It is the screen, the actual phone look even better than that picture.

Looks so good on the omnia 7 screen.

Enjoy!

A great lock screen. Does anyone have recomendations for other screens, any sites dedicated to it yet?

:lol Am I the the only person here coming from webOS to WP7 (although I did have an iPhone4 earlier this summer)? I finally gave in and ordered the Samsung Focus on ebay. Over $500 :/ but I'll get my phone before all you $50 Amazon deal snatchers :P
Nah, in the past year I've gone through WebOS, iOS (3G and 4) and Android (2.1).

Despite it's failings I love WM7. It'll be interesting to see the platform in 12-18 months.

Ok so my phone is on its last legs, and I have yet to have ANY kind of smartphone. I have used an Iphone, and a Droid, etc, but I have never owned one or paid for the service.

Which leads to my question...

How do I know what kind of Data plan I need? (AT&T)

I already have unlimited texting on my plan....not sure if that matters.

I would just hate to get the basic data plan and then just burn through it fast but I would hate more to pay a ton and not really need it!!

Do certain phones use more data? Case in point this WP7 phones always having info on the front screen. Is that slowly ticking away my data plan? Or is it such a small amount that it means nothing?

I sound and feel dumb for these questions...but hey, I gotta ask ;P

EDIT : Addon question... Is it stupid to buy a WP7 phone if I don't ever plan on paying for an Xbox Live account?

Gotta admit I find it interesting to see some of you coming from ancient devices into a WP7. I can see the attraction though as I think MS has managed to prepare a compelling and easy to get into product. At this point, I think the OS is still too young for me, but I am a big power user with years of OS's under my belt. I can't see myself letting go of Android right now.

I will say I am eagerly awaiting that SP1 they've been talking about since it looks to be bringing quite a punch to the table.
Seeing you mention SP1 makes me wonder how Microsoft is going to denote version changes. Calling them service packs seems so dirty but using point release version numbers seems like it would cheapen the Windows Phone 7 brand.

Windows Phone 7 1.x, maybe?

They will ask you at the store what plan you want, either 250mb for 15$ a month or 2gb for 30$ per month.

I have an iphone 3gs and lets just say if you use your phone (or will) for internet when you have it, then def. go for the 2gb plan. I have used 208mb and I am only 1 week into my new bill.

2 GB plan is $25.

I wouldnt recommend the $15 data plan to any smartphone user. Start high, drop down after you know your usage pattern.

Addon answer: Nope. You don't need to be a paying member of XBL to enjoy gaming on WP7. You can create a Silver / free account and you still get your avatar, friends, achievements, etc etc... Not sure on the turn-based multiplayer, but I don't see why it wouldn't work (and haven't heard anything to the contrary). When real-time multiplayer makes its way to the phone, that may be a different story (but I sure hope not).

As for the plans, absolutely get the 2GB plan. You can always turn it down once you can see how you're using the phone (different people use it for different things, so yours could be higher / lower than other peoples data). It's much better to overshoot than undershoot in this case, since if you go over, you won't know and the cost per MB (or is it KB?) is huge once you pass your limit.

Here's an article (with a chart) by Paul Thurrott on data usage of his WP7 device that may be of interest.

I have 22 days left in my billing cycle (so about a week into it) and I am at 32 MB used of a 2GB plan (1%)

For me, I have wifi at home and wifi at work - the two places where I spend almost all of my time (during the weekdays). So most of my data needs are served via wifi and not the ATT network.

I agree that it is probably safer to start with 2GB and move down after you get a couple of months of usage in.

Ah blast the Focus's beautiful screen! It being exclusive to AT&T is whats keeping me from diving into windows 7. I really want to break free from AT&T and switch to T-mobile for the cheaper rate plans and faster network, but they only have the HD7! which still seems like a really nice phone but the lack of a SAMOLED is really killing it for me.
This OS really benefits from having a beautiful display so I want the best of the best..ugh

EDIT: Count me in as another iphone to Windows 7 convert! :D

Well I'm stuck with Sprint so at least you have options at the moment. :/

As long as you don't stream video or audio over 3G the cheaper plan is probably fine.

My wife has uses around 50-100 MB a month. WiFi at home/works helps a lot to reduce usage as mentioned above.

Here's a calculator from AT&T to get an idea of usage. Remember that this is network usage, not WiFi.

Streaming is definitely a big factor, but don't forget the apps. At 250mb a month, that means at around 13 apps, you've exceeded your limit. That doesn't even take into consideration the amount of data that those apps will use and all of the other data features on the phone.

While WiFi is good, for people who are more on the move, you need to make sure you have that layer of security with the higher package. Plus, if you're going to be paying for all that data, why not use it more often? Since on the Focus you can expand the memory, I would be downloading tons and tons of apps (probably mostly trying out their trials unless one could convince me to buy it).

And looking into the future, when they add real-time multiplayer, you're going to be glad you got that higher package if you don't have wifi and want to game :lol

I've never owned a smart phone as I saw little benefit in owning an iPhone when I have a bog standard phone and an iPod Touch in my pocket (given that the app store is the big appeal for me and I already have access to it). It'd feel like a slight upgrade not worthy of the money to me since I've been using iOS on my touch for years. I love the look of the WP7 UI, so I think I'm going to buy my first smart phone this Christmas. I am truly looking at this from an ignorant perspective though, so clue me in if there is any particular reason to consider Android.

Also, any particular phone I should be looking at in the UK/holding out for? At the moment it seems the Samsung Omnia 7 and HTC HD7 are the best ones, and I'm leaning towards the Omnia for dat screen!

I returned my HD7 after 2 days... The screen looked terrible compared to my Samsung vibrant (SAMOLED), the power button was too recessed and hard to press, the speaker was very tinny and not very loud and the battery life was awful(1230 MAh for that 4.3" screen? Ouch)

I signed up w/ at&t to get the focus despite telling myself that I'd never do the contract thing again. No regrets so far, though. I love this phone!

The Omnia is the one I've heard about the most (definitely better than the HD7), so go with your instinct! :D

Get the Omnia 7.

How do you change the pictures in the Picture tile? I remember seeing the option pop up once when I was in the picture app but I couldn't find it again.

That quote confused me. It said 15-20 smartphones in 2011, for every 50 Windows Phone 7 made, there would be 24 android, and blah blah. So I think it wasn't about models, it was about the production numbers.
Ugh ... yeah you're right. My bad (rfl).

I guess my point kind of stands though. Samsung has announced that WP7 will be in twice as many of their phones as Android.

Ditto... Choice is easy IMO
I thought it was at first too, but then I noticed some review sites saying things like "The HD7 just edges it as the best WP7 launch hardware", though I honestly can't see any advantages that outweigh the Omnia screen. In fact many note that the HD7 screen is particularly poor. Just checking I wasn't missing something, Omnia 7 it is! Thanks guys.

I got some more hands on time with the Samsung Focus. I managed to add the Scroll to Bottom bookmarklet (once I figured out the text cursor, nice). The bookmarklet didn't work!!! WTF?! They had some MicroSD cards on sale too and the lady assured me that they were official and supported. But the 16GB cost $80 and the 32GB cost $140. Again WTF?!

So ... I'm sitting home, waiting for the phone call from AT&T ... and ... nothing.

The girl from yesterday had given me her digits, so I call and leave a message. About an hour later, still no call. I go run some errands and eventually drop on by. She sees me and runs over, telling me how she was thinking about me (I assume not in that way lol).

Apparently they hadn't received the okay yet, and that's why they hadn't contacted me. Either way, she goes in the back to talk to the manager, comes out and tells me ...

... they didn't get the okay, but the manager said fuck it and they'll do it anyway :lol

So $50 and I get to keep my old PDA plan. Fuck Yeah!!!!!

In all seriousness, this was probably one of the best purchases I've ever made in terms of costumer service. I don't know if it was just her, the store, or AT&T has some new push ... but they bent over backwards to give me epic service. She stated all her and the manager care about is making me happy :o

Don't know what to say. Haven't had a purchase like that in ... I honestly can't recall when.

Seems like it'd be perfect for Sony. Their software is garbage and their design is good.
Yeah what the hell at that president's comments... Hardware is the only reason anyone I know buys - and even imports - Sony Ericsson phones. They look awesome, have great battery life (the non-smartphones at least), and are built like rocks (maybe the non-smartphones again). Handle the hardware and let someone who knows software do the software.

You can get them from amazon for $25.

Is there a list of SD's that are confirmed to work with the Focus?

Is there any speed ramifications - slower? Are there ones that will actually improve speed?

Two questions for the veterans here:

1) Does anyone bother with a screen protector on Gorilla Glass phones? If so, what's recommended? I'm particularly annoyed by reflections/glare ... I'd like to continue using this outside.

2) Zune software - is there any way to reverse the color scheme? ie. Black background, white fonts? Note, I'm using the XP version.

Thanks. I actually found this link that has some others listed. Curiously the 32GB SanDisk appears to be unstable. I think I'll wait for this to settle out a bit. But if the Kingston continues to work for everyone, maybe I'll go with that. I just can't see bothering with a 16GB - go big or go home :p Hopefully it's easy to get everything set up again if you do the install later.

The Samsungs are gorilla glass as well as the Dell. My Omnia 7 I'm not too woried about scratches, it's sturdy. So far havent had a problem with glare, then again it November in London so there's been no sun :)))

Not sure about about the Zune colour sceme though :)

I just put on on of those Invisible Skin... I will let you know in a few days how it work out. There's a lot of little bubbles which they said will disappear in a few days.

I am using Sandisk 16gb Class 2 and haven't have any problem. I don't see how you can manage with 8gb .. even with my meager music collection I was near capacity after a few apps and podcasts download. To me 16gb on top of the 8gb is plenty and 32gb SD go for $70-80 while 16gb was $25.00 from Amazon ... but if you don't mind reset your phone later then yeah why not wait.

Believe me I'm not cool with 8gb ... I'd just rather wait for 32gb than accept a lesser size

I definitely look forward to u'r impressions on the skins

I'll say the following ...

Yes, I'm a bit wasted. However I'm clear enough to realize we don't have any sort of beginners guide to wp7. If anyone has some seemingly obvious shortcuts ... Post away

I saw some of the product placement and oh my god terribly obvious :lol Hopefully it's on 30 Rock soon as 30 Rock product placements are awesome.
