Yes, I got the 16 GB one off contract for $499. For some reason it says the estimated delivery date is the 22nd instead of the 14th for me even though I ordered it a day prior to the big launch.
That is odd... I ordered it today and it shows me I will get on the 14th... (of course I already own the HTC HD7 lol)

A buddy of mine is asking ... what's the best google voice app on the WP7? Are there any major issues or missing features with it?

Is there an upcoming one that is expected to be better (official or not)?

Hmm, can you actually buy without contract? I don't think so even if it does display the price?
Yes, T-Mobile offers no contract service at a $20 discount versus their subsidized offerings.

http://www.techeye.net/mobile/microsoft-strong-armed-into-adding-wp7-homebrew

The developers behind the ChevronWP7 jailbreaking tool have discontinued it after striking a deal with Microsoft to integrate homebrewing options directly into the operating system itself.

The ChevronWP7 developers, which include Rafael Rivera, Chris Walsh and Long Zheng, were contacted by Brandon Watson, Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7 at Microsoft about the possibility of bringing some of the jailbreak features into the main OS.

The developers decided to discontinue the tool in order to “fast-track” discussions with Microsoft on how homebrewing can become a pivotal aspect of Windows Phone 7.

It was only last week that Windows Phone 7 was jailbroken with the ChevronWP7 unlocking tool, less than a month after the operating system's initial release.

With Microsoft now offering “to open the Windows Phone 7 platform for broader access to developers and users”, it appears that the walled garden approach it was previously taking may be losing ground.

The unlocking has allowed a number of opportunities for development within the homebrewing community, including a new Windows Phone 7 custom ringtone manager that the ChevronWP7 team have been working on.

It remains to be seen what kinds of homebrewing options will be added to the OS and if ChevronWP7 will resurface again. With some reports indicating a major update to Windows Phone 7 in January 2011, some of those features may come sooner than expected.

http://www.chevronwp7.com/post/2057541126/pursuing-the-future-of-homebrew-on-windows-phone-7

Earlier today, we were contacted by Brandon Watson, Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7, to discuss the ChevronWP7 unlocking tool.

Through this discussion, we established a mutual understanding of our intent to enable homebrew opportunities and to open the Windows Phone 7 platform for broader access to developers and users.

To pursue these goals with Microsoft’s support, Brandon Watson has agreed to engage in futher discussions with us about officially facilitating homebrew development on WP7. To fast-track discussions, we are discontinuing the unlocking tool effective immediately.

Good for Microsoft.. hopefully they'll open up the possibility of native applications to third party developers.. as well as the ability to load their own applications on their devices if they choose.

So in other words they were given a nice money hat. Cool I guess, that is until I have to start paying for features that should have been there since the start.
or this.

Well at least they are pro-active about it and possible allowing home brew to flousih in somewhat control environment so we don't have hackers and pirates that used them as tools for well getting stuff for free.

Really glad MS made that decision, hope that will attract more devs! Depends on how it's "implemented", I guess...

GoVoice is what I've been using and it works well enough...I really only use it to check my voicemail.

I thought all MS employees get free Windows Phone 7....

They do. Basically you buy the phone, and MS will reimburse you. This way employees can get whatever phone they want on whatever carrier they want, and they also get to get the deals such as BOGO. This is on top of their heavily discounted service plans carriers offer them. The AT&T rep at the store said MS employees get a way better discount on plans than AT&T's own employees. :lol

I'm trying to let the battery on my Focus drain completely but it keeps croaking out pitiful cries that I almost can't help sticking the cable back in. :|

So is this the general consensus on the pro? Cause Dell has it on their site for 99.99 and being that I'm switching to tmobile I only have the choice between the pro and the hd7

The early releases of Venue Pro got some issue, hopefully they fixed all the issues. The phone spec sound really good.

Microsoft needs to get the Venue Pro and the other phone T-Mobile USA has on Mobilicity and Wind in Canada... It would be by far the best phone on the networks, uses the same bands so shouldn't require different engineering, and Wind and Mobilicity are having killer deals that are making people jump ship. Right now every network that WP7 is on here also carries the iPhone 4 and new Androids making it a tougher sell.

Ina Fried has jumped in the ring and said the first update will be miniscule, not massive. The only two big features will be support for more carriers and copy / paste.

http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101201/windows-phone-7-update-is-no-iphone-killer/

I don't want to go into too many details, but I did get to see the new update, but they only showed me the copy / paste (which actually works a bit better than the iPhone). When asked what other major features were in there, they replied "that's really the only big thing in here". If turn-by-turn and custom ringtones really were in there, I would guess that they would have mentioned it. He did say what would be in their next update as well, but I didn't really get a lot of details, so I'm going to rather not saying anything at all since there's a few different ways to view what was meant.

Either way, copy / paste will be awesome, even though in my two days of having a phone I haven't had a need for it.

Darkener2 said:
I hope that isn't true... I would rather have turn by turn before copy and paste, but still I hope it isn't a minor update too.

It does add one major new feature, which will be handy. I would love turn-by-turn too, but I'm used to not having it coming from iPhone and I can wait. I'm hoping it comes soon (from the sounds of it, not in the second update either). I know MS said it wants to do a yearly "major" update with multiple minor updates. Copy/Paste is considered a minor update if I remember them talking about it. Maybe we could get the first major update next fall! :D

Looks like LG has the best line up of exclusive applications. Apparently they plan to release 10 free apps every 60 days.

Some random internet comment said:
Text to Speech App (you know the deal)
Look n Type (see through camera while you type)
Workout Tracker (fantastic little GPS enabled workout tool)
Play To (DLNA playto app to allow you to stream to your PC or TV over wireless)
Tool Box (leveler, World Clock, Flashlight, World Holidays, Unit Converter, Date Calculator, Random number generator, Sale price calculator app pack)
ScanSearch (use your camera and move it around to show you locations around you... very nifty app)
Panarama Shot (works very well for stitching shots - it's all guided and it's absolutely fantastic)
MetroScanner (shows you where the local metro stations are in London)
Photo Stylist (Great little photo editing app with filters)
I'm a Musician (a little guitar playing app) - two versions - guitar and piano available... piano works well!

I would have considered a Optimus 7 if they brought it to the states.

Hopefully other manufacturers take note. I know the Samsung offerings are putrid, can't comment on HTC.

Firestorm said:
Couldn't you just import the Optimus 7 from Canada, unlock it, and use it just fine in the US?

Sure, it's possible. But that sort of hoop jumping makes it a lot less appealing to me. $50 to Amazon for the Focus was too compelling to even entertain other options.

Somewhere in this thread I linked to a forum with users of it. As antiquegamer stated, the initial release was fraught with problems. While it's possible some or all have been rectified, the other issue is the design itself.

A poster in this thread actually tried one out, and the sentiment is one I've read from others. The ergonomics just aren't there, and it feels kind of cheap. Regardless of how it looks in pictures, in real life the design just isn't what you'd expect.

I'd certainly keep an eye open for more reviews now that it relaunched, because obviously YMMV. I however decided to stay away and am very happy with my Focus.

Looks like Amazon Wireless is selling Windows Phones for $0.01 for new customers.

Upgrades aren't eligible for that price.

Is anyone worried about all these deals? Is this normal for a new release? I didn't have any problem with it until reading some articles about how abnormal it is.

A shit ton of Android phones have been this price too. Amazon was selling some of the Galaxy S phones like the Captivate for a penny on and off since launch.

It's probably not great news, but it seems everyone not named Apple does this. Maybe just to move stock. Maybe because it's worth it for everyone involved ie OS company gets more market share, carrier gets the contract signed or renewed, and Amazon probably gets some kind of kick back.

PS: This actually reminds me more of a EU type model of selling phones.

Mind pointing to these articles?

Deals? You still have a contract to pay. Damn, here in the UK you rarely if ever pay for the phone itself.

I just found a few over the past few days, here's a recent one: http://mashable.com/2010/11/27/microsoft-promo-windows-phone-7-sales/

Is this just a typically lowball Black Friday sale? Or is this indicative of lackluster sales for Windows Phone 7 devices? It could be both; we won’t know for certain until we have more information about Microsoft’s numbers for Windows Phone 7 sales.

Still, this sale, however conveniently timed, is reminiscent of an identical offer made for the KIN, the prematurely axed device that was Microsoft’s last big mobile attempt. In that case, low sales — some say as few as mere hundreds of units — prompted the price-slashing and rebranding of the phone in the same year it was released.

I've never really been a part of a phone launch, so I don't know if this is normal or not. Admittedly, a lot of the articles seem to spin it against MS.

No, it's pretty normal for this time of year, the carrier are very aggressive to get you to lock into their contract. Most people unless they are really unhappy would stay with that carrier for a long time even after their contract is up.

I was at Costco today and there were plenty of Android phone for free or 49.99 on that note I also was able to convince Costco (and their Wireless subcontract) that they are better off price matching my phone than have me bring the phone back and get a new one. So I got $150.00 back today.

I wish my wife would have hold off on getting her phone earlier this year, she would really love WP7 phone since she's always on Facebook.

I think you will be very happy with the Focus. It's only shortcoming was the 8gb memory (though I have no problem with the 16gb sandisk I stick in there since launch it's work perfectly). It looks cheapish due to Samsung loves for shiny black plastics and fake chrome but the actual phone feel pretty good. It's also very light to boot.

My wife is putting it through the paces.

No complaints about the storage yet. By the time it becomes an issue, hopefully the Micro SD situation is straightened out.

The look and feel of the phone is fine. It's replacing a 3G, so the gloss black and chrome accents are nothing new. Needs a case, hopefully the one I ordered arrives soon. . .

For those that have used Handbrake what preset did you use to rip video to then throw into zune?

I just modified the iphone 4 profile to limit the resolution to 800 instead of 960 (left everything else the same) and it seems to work well.

My video was fine but audio always garbled. I got something to work in AVC. Had to use xvid in an avi wrapper.

Company I work for also have corporate discount with At&t but it's like $15.00 a month...not that I am complaining.

Last night I had a proper go with my cousins desire HD. Really happy with my choice of Omnia 7, the desire felt groggy, nowhere near as smooth as my phone. Only jealous of the apps and games he has.

Looking forward to the supposed update to the app Beezz, it will be the first live tile Twitter app with toasts for mentions and PMs. I'm excited, finally getting the functionality out of the phone that it should have had from the official Twitter app.

No worries though, if this app works correctly Twitter will simply buy it up and replace its product with the Beezz app.

So after waiting three weeks, l received not one but two phones lol and they were delivered 30mins apart. This is obviously a mistake on amazon's part. l had called them last week because l had not received the phone and they essentially declared it lost and then shipped me another one. Well, it tends out it wasn't lost after all - I am tempted to keep both of them :lol but l will do the right thing.

Well, I called customer care, and apparently theres no delay or anything on my part and I'm going to get it when everyone else does. However, I've been hearing rumblings about peoples orders getting delayed until the 27th or even canceled, my phone is still "in production" and slated for the 22nd so we'll have to see.

My phone started crying a good hour before it finally died. I just kept waiting and waiting and waiting and just kept loading GAF pages on it. Made a call to my brother and it died within 2 mins.

:lol

Mine's never gotten that low, what's this crying about? And does a total drain actually help the charge?

I got the notification "Your battery is critically low, please charge it", and then went on to watch an entire 25 minute tv show (downloaded onto the phone, not streaming or anything), followed by browsing the net for about 2 minutes before it finally died on me.

Its something I've always been told to do with rechargeable batteries. An absolute must with Nickel Cadmium batteries, and a good occasional habit with lithium ion. Someone can probably explain the reasoning behind it better than I could though so I'll let someone else do that.
