Windows Phone 7 |OT|

Does this phone have a dedicated Facebook app or it is just built into the phone? I like the idea of having a dedicated app.

We need to create a new thread and move everyone to it this week. Would be nice to have it up around CES for all of the WP7 news.

PS: Read the thread we just went over the iphone contacts thing.
Why can't we just have a CES 2011 thread? I don't see why we should replace the OT just because of that.

E: I probably misunderstood that.

That said, I really want the OS this week.

few gaming questions probably no one can answer yet...

1. where's ilomilo for non att phones? i thought the exclusivity expires this new year.

2. where's angry birds? at least announce a due date.

3. where's castlevania? i'm sure microsoft announced this would be out by end of 2010.

Yeah I meant just a new thread for the new year and that now would be a good time with CES coming as well as the 1st big update. Not just a WP7 CES thread, but a new thread in general. I just thought now would be a good time since we have both CES this month and Mobile World Congress next month!

So getting a HD7 if true.:D

You know , I wish there was a way to disable the buttons when playing games, that shit is getting annoying, the slightest touch and poof, you go back to the home screen, bing search, or the game's menu.

So you already want a new OT? After two months? Why not, you know, update the OP? It's not like we're going to see massive updates.

It's coming in 'some months'.

CamandoSpawn
@RovioMobile Is there any chance of Angry Birds on Windows Phone 7?

RovioMobile
@CamandoSpawn yes, give us some months...
Wonder why the hell it's taking so long. They even announces a PSP and PS3 version.

I sure love the physical buttons of my Optimus 7. *smug*

Finally jumping on board and have ordered an Omnia 7 that should get here Thursday.
This will be my first 'smartphone' - Hopefully they are easy to use?

Any cool or 'must have' apps /games that I should look into downloading?

Is it too soon for new hardware? Surprised nothing new has leaked yet, so I doubt anything will be revealed hardware wise at CES.

It's probably not to soon for new phones from other manufacturers (Asus for example) and they're probably going to introduce the CDMA phones, but I highly doubt we'll see phones with something better than the first gen Snapdragon. At least not at this CES.

edit: looks like we tied

Paul Thurrot does have a pretty good track record when it comes to MS news..... and is what I have thought would happen from the beginning. 2 major updates a year similar to the zune/xbox.

As expected and imo not the right approach for the phone market. And I'm disappointed by the date. I expected the update this week. So much for "very, very soon", Mr. Belfiore.

So I basically Copy&Paste and nothing else? Ugh. If we keep moving at that speed it'll take years and years to have an OS on par with iOS 4... That sounds horrible. :/

That is what Microsoft has been saying the whole time actually, it's just rumors have run crazy. It also says a number of software fixes, not quite sure what that entails.

I'm pretty happy to see support for new chipsets so quickly. I know a lot of people were under the impression that we'd be seeing the QSD8250 all year.

I'm also a little unsure why people think their approach is bad for the phone market. Apple does a major update once a year, Google does a couple updates a year but it takes forever for them to reach your phone. I'm sure the time and money it takes to deploy and test these updates is not insignificant.

You can count me in agreement. It's what we thought, but totally poor form. I wonder how serious MS is treating this shit honestly. Maybe they'll get a wake up call when everyone is spooging over "4G" android phones this week.

I was just hoping for something more. Maybe also a Zune-Software Update. I want the WP7 series to succeed (that's why I bought one), but it seems impossible if Microsoft is not willing to put out one feature after another.

I really love my HD7, but it's just so sad that Microsoft is so far behind. We don't even have IM yet and it seems like there's not even a good way to implement this kind of stuff. We're lightyears behind Apple and when someone asks me for advice I always have to recommend the iPhone. And it seems like I'll still be giving the same advice in five months. I'm not angry or mad, but that's just how it seems to me...

On another note:

The two new Xbox Live titles Pac-Man and Tower Bloxx: New York will be available tonight.

Oh shit Pac-Man? Like fucking real deal Pac-Man Championship Edition?

They are not light years behind apple.. there are a number of areas where they are ahead of apple.

Applications is the big area they are lacking.. Apple has had a considerable amount of time in this area, when the iPhone launched they had no applications that weren't web apps.. third party apps weren't allowed or available for a full year but had been available on other platforms for many years already.. (not counting Installer.app.. and the initial jailbreak..)

They lack multitasking, which it took Apple 3 years to implement and is only available to the last 2 generations of Apple hardware.. (3GS,iPad and iPhone 4 only)

Copy and Paste/ Turn by Turn navigation

Aside from these 4 things, what big ticket items is microsoft missing in their new version 1.0 product?

IM apps are in development.. these things take time, afterall..

I was thinking February was pretty quick for an update!

I don't know, I didn't think it was really behind Apple in any area that really mattered when I bought the phone and nothing has changed since then.

Weird. I saw this update news elsewhere and was expecting a little bit more of a positive reaction here, I guess!

The main thing I think Microsoft needs to do to be competitive is continue to develop their APIs. Lack of socket support, access to the camera, and no native development are serving as a road block to getting a number of very important apps.

Right.

They need to open up their API and stop limiting people to SilverLight and XNA..

That works in a vacuum, but not when your competition has been out and iterated upon so much.

Also are we gonna get custom ring tones in Feb or are we still gonna have to wait for that as well?

Also you asked what else we are missing. How about a browser with modern features and support? No Flash OR HTML5 kills us.

PG2G said:
I think a lot of you guys underestimate what it takes to develop software
Well, that's partly correct... I don't know how long it takes to develop a software. That still doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is years behind Apple and that's all the user cares about. Hearing "It takes a long time to develop feature x" is worth nothing when your competitor already has had feature x for a good amount of time. It's good to know more about the topic, because it makes you really appreciate everything a bit more, but at the end of the day all I can see is that there are features that Apple had for years while Microsoft wasn't able to have them when they launched years later. A YouTube Application, for example. There are ways to watch your YouTube Videos, sure, but why isn't a good solution available for everyone (for free)?

Maybe I sound so negative, because I'm living in Europe where Xbox Live Extras wasn't available for a long time and the Zune Software still sucks and lacks a lot of features (if you don't modify it, and even then it lacks important things). I'm actually quite happy with my phone. E-Mail, Word, Excel, games... everything is perfect. I just wish more things were as good as these.

WP7 has that. :p I have the Navigon App (was free) and it does turn by turn navigation without problems.

I thought I've read somewhere that it (currently) wasn't possible to get these running and that devs have to figure out a way to bypass some restrictions which made a good IM Messenger impossible. I still think everything's moving extremely slow...

They are working on addressing that stuff. If you guys aren't willing to accept the reality that software development takes time then you guys should have waited for the platform to mature.

3rd party wise yes, but we should get a good MSN one direct from MS since they have full system access.

I agree with you on your feelings about time though. We get that it TAKES time, but releasing behind your competition means you might not HAVE time.

The word is that IM+ should be hitting in February, which is a multi-client messenger with support on a lot of different platforms. I'm guessing the lack of socket support means that they need to do something like this...

WP7 ---HTTP Request---> IM+ Servers ---Socket---> AIM

Instead of

WP7 ---Socket---> AIM

That's just my guess though. I have no idea how some of the streaming audio apps must work, maybe there is some other support built in for streaming media.

BTW, as much as we talk about MSN. I don't know a single person that uses it. If that does come, I'll probably be using it primarily for Facebook support.

Well.. finally ordered my WP7 today... Luckily my work is going to pay for it so I can not complain. Went with the LG Quantum. Never had a smart phone.. only an iPod Touch so excited.

i sure hope the pacman released tonight is the new Championship Edition DX version. the reviews for the DX version are off the charts. it would be a major coup for WP7 if it were released first on WP7 before android or iphone.

Ditto though I've not seen any news about this yet.

I don't think it's going to happen. I'm not even sure if it's the CE.

Is it time to talk about what we want added yet outside of Multitasking?

Switching between Live IDs like I can do easily with my 360
Buying apps with MS points.
MSN integration (contacts, messaging etc.)
Added codec support.
Flash video
Video Marketplace

edit:
Also why does my Zune software keep randomly coming up on my pc?
I also can't get my podcasts to sync.

While all these are true, the fact is WP7 are not competing with iPhone from gen 1 nor Android 1.0 they are competing in 2011 where these things are expected of the smartphone. To left out these features at launch and after over a month still have buggy, crashy marketplace, half-ass implementation of Xbox Live and even the Bing search works better on competitor phones is just make you scratch your head.

I think it's really short sight of them to not exceed Apple offering or at least offer similar feature set instead of having features to compete with smartphones from 2 years ago.

The update just need to faster and quicker. Marketplace snafu should quickly be fix, Xbox Live intergration that also should have been fix by now along with the marketplace search and Zune app stability (so it doesn't crash after streaming for long period and force you to reset the phone).

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I love Windows phone much more so than the iPhone. The UI is pretty, the phone is fast and intuitive to use (for the most part). But as is, I really can't recommend Windows phone 7 to people unless they really love the UI and heavily invest in Microsoft eco such as Zune and Xbox Live.

How about, instead of focusing on what iOS and Android do that WP7 doesn't, you guys start focusing on what WP7 does and iOS and Android don't.

Enjoy those features and wait for the rest to come. The operating system has been out for like two months (some of which was during the holiday season), you guys really need to get your expectations in line with reality. Software doesn't come out of thin air and you can't exactly just through a bunch of resources at it and expect it to be done quicker -_-

I never knew Kindle had so many free books. I hope in the future Microsoft adds some sort of launcher/association kind of functionality that would let u place a Kindle book on your home screen and have it automatically launch in the app.

In case it’s not obvious, the first update above, combined with previous information about carriers’ abilities to stop updates for “one cycle” only, suggests very strongly that Microsoft will never (or at least not normally) ship fixes for individual issues. Instead, it appears to be handling WP updates as it does with services packs in the desktop Windows world. This is, in my opinion, a huge mistake. Microsoft has plenty to fix in Windows Phone, and it should be doing so as quickly as possible, one fix at a time if necessary.
The biggest request is for fixes. I think the copy&paste update will come with enough bug fixes though.

The fact that I have to wait until February and it's not even a major update sucks. The fact that the kindle app is out is wonderful, though. Dropbox is the next big one on my list. Big app releases can definitely help to nullify not having big updates right away. The schedule, even for the little updates, needs to be sped up, though. They need to take a Google chrome approach, its on the eighth version after just two years, where explorer is on nine after more than a decade. They are chrome now, they need to have that underdog mentality.
