Whoa I hadn't seen that Samsung one. It's really good, better than the fan one. Except for the awkward, "If it...had that...and this!...shouldn't you...have one?...yes...you should...." line I loved it.

Yeah, it was the dialog that turned me off too. It at least spouted off features and showed the phone in an elegant way, but the sales pitch came off as smug asshole. I'd rather an ad show, rather than tell what the features are. The tone was off. And the flashy ad (literally) was indeed all style and no substance, but at least it was inventive in how it show off the phone. I liked how the song meshed with the bit beats and the tiles. Give it a little more substance, a little more concrete feature porn, and it's definitely ready for prime time.

You know...I'm not completely tech-retarded. But whenever I see the Samsung commercial, I end up nodding and thinking "yes, I should have one."

Will be very interesting to compare the performance of it to my 3G, 3GS, 4, and iPad.

Framerate isn't great on any of them, but best on iPad and 4.
Really bad on 3G and slightly better on 3GS.

I am really interested in a WP7 now but I can´t decide on the hardware. The HTC Trophy looks really nice I have to say, but seems a bit huge.

The Trophy isn't huge for a smartphone. 3.7" is pretty much the average size. If you're not interested in a new contract, search for it on eBay, you should be able to get it cheap (under 300 bucks).

If I was Microsoft, I would hightlight the app and how beautiful WP7 are compare to the other smart phone. The IMBD app, and many of the news readers are just beautiful to use ... I would also show off the Zune music player with nice background, music info etc.

The UI is really the highlight and they should show it off more.

imo no. but then again i thought Black ops wouldn't sell. you always have to remember people are much dumber easily amused by catchy music and flashing lights. also Microsoft has failed to address one key problems in all there ads. which is music. they have highlight zune alot more.

Just checked iTunes and its $5 on there, so Im gonna take a shot in the dark and say this is going to be another $7 konami title.
so will windows phone 7 users always have to pay more for games that are on the IOS as well?

Official XBL branded games for WP7 are always more expensive than the iOS counterparts. Minimum price is $2.99 from what I can tell. Everything else on the marketplace is up to the developer. You see shitty games for $2.99 or great XBL indie ports for $0.99. There are even some good free games out there.

This! I really hope it runs better than on the iOS devices, but I kind of doubt it. I'm still a bit sad that Puzzle Quest 2 runs like crap. I own it for the Xbox and the Nintendo DS and would have bought it again, but when they're already charging more than on the competitor's platform they should at least polish the game.

For our French users:

Bing is out of beta in France and the local search on WP7 is working now.

Local_search_wp7_france.jpg

Microsoft has just announced that Bing is now finally out of beta in France so the first thing I did was to try it out on Windows Phone 7 to see if anything has changed, especially Local Search. Like I said in yesterday’s news about the rumored April 11th update; I was told that this feature will be enabled in H1 2011 and that it wouldn’t necessarily require an OS update on the WP7 handsets being used in France (or another country outside of the US which already has all these features enabled). Turns out that this may have been wrong (no surprise here…never fully trust what a company spokesperson tells you..) because as off right now the only way to get local search in Bing (in UK and now in France) on WP7 is to set your the Browser & Search region to US. This leads me to believe that their may be some truth to the April 11th update that Orange France is talking about.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 9,000--right on schedule
.wpcentral said:
Time for our usual punch-in-the-arm reminder that growth in the Marketplace is a steady as a ninja's hand, hitting the 9,000 mark today. Like clockwork, the addition of 1,000 new apps and games comes exactly two-weeks after the last mini-milestone.
We noted in early January that if the trend keeps up, the Marketplace will hit 10,000 by mid-March. We're now certain that will happen. The big question we have is will the 500 per week number ever increase?

1. What SD card works the best for the Focus? I am not planning to spend more than $50 on the card, so it may have to be 16 or 8 GB.

2. For the Focus owners out there, how do you like it?

1. I am using an 8GB class 2 sandisk and have had zero issues

2. I really like the Focus. Call quality on ear and speaker calls is great for me (AT&T Oklahoma) The screen is fantastic, i rarely need my brightness on anything other than low. The only issue I have with the Focus hardware wise is my volume rocker squeaks. I think it is a handsome device and has a very nice weight and feel to it as well.

So I went back to Ilo Milo today as I hadn't played it since the update which I did already download.

Note to MS: We need more Ilo Milos of the world and less Pac Mans, Castlevania Puzzle, and Puzzle Quest 2s. Milo is fun, unique, fully featured, rather lengthy, solid controlling, great graphically without big fps problems, sweet soundtrack, and something I can't get else where.

Exactly my sentiment. I mean, for the platform to survive they DO need big iPhone ports like Angry Birds and Doodle Jump, but an exclusive title here and there goes without saying.

Also: Hydro Thunder soon.

they're coming. ilomilo was a start, hydro thunder and plants vs zombies are also great exclusives.

any katamari impressions?

Plants vs. Zombies is either on or is coming out on PC retail/Digital download services, Xbox 360, PS3, DS, iOS, Android and soon to be WP7. It's not exclusive. It's a good get though, great time waster.

IloMilo is a great pick up and play game that plays to the strengths of the interface and looks nice. Much like Angry Birds, PvZ and stuff like that. MS would do well to get more games like that onboard.

Microsoft really has to do something about App purchases / App management soon. Why can't I just simply download an App (to my PC) to then transfer it over to my cell phone when I connect it?

Instead it shows me this image with useless information.

When will be the next time my phone checks for App Updates? Do I need to be connected to a router? What happens if I can't connect to a router? It's a nice idea for very small Apps that could be downloaded via EDGE, but not for 60+MB games or applications.

Has Microsoft ever said why they didn't just copy what Apple's iDevices are doing? They should at least give me the choice. My internet at home is pretty slow and I can't always access the router with my cell phone. Downloading via 3G is not an option either since it's not available where I live (EDGE only).

Uhm, isn't this exactly what happens? It downloads the app (as a .xap file, iirc) and if you connect your phone, it will be transferred and then installed (with a delay). I could be wrong though. And app updates? Well, you obviously need some kind of internet connection to get the reminder, but they get pushed out as soon as they hit the marketplace. Just today I got an update for myChannel9 and Pixel Man.

But yeah, I agree. Zune on Windows doesn't have any app management. At least with a Zune HD you can see the apps you have installed.

Yup, even though these games are everywhere else it definitely doesn't hurt to have them available.

PvZ works really well on a mobile device.

Wow, I didn't know that exist for Zune HD, why can't they implement something like this for Windows Phone 7.. @_@

I jumped in on this and bought a tmobile HTC HD7 on ebay. I'm going to be using it on mobilicity which requires AWS support and this is the only WP7 phone that supports it as far as I can tell. I'm pretty excited about it as this will be my first smart phone.

Congrats! The HD7 is a great device. :)

Even if you don't care about Halo, take a quick look at the new version of the Halo Waypoint app to see how well it integrates XBL and uses the UI conventions (not the appearance).

Caveat: I work in Halo, but am especially proud of this app.

I'm sure it's coming. You can tell that WP7 supports was just added into Zune 4.x. We'll probably see real support when Zune 5.x comes out.

Love the new app. Now focus that energy into an actual you know game for my phone Mr. ...!

I was just wondering if anyone else that has a Dell Venue Pro have experienced light bleed when you press the touch buttons at the bottom of the screen (<-, Windows, Search). The light comes out from the edges of the chrome and the top part of the screen.

I called Dell to replace it but the new phone does it as well, is this for all of them or am I just out of luck twice?

Nice! I'm thinking of mobilicity as i'm on vmobile prepaid right now... let us know how it all works

It did just update for me last night. Maybe they were waiting for the update to be pushed.

in b4: WP7 fragmentation.
LoL nice!

Still no rumors of the update coming back does make me think this is a harder problem to fix than maybe originally thought.

Yeah wonder what happen to the phone update...

The pre-NoDo update for Samsung phones is back.

From the WP blog:
UPDATE—Wed. Mar. 2

Starting today, we plan to resume rolling out the February update to Samsung phones. Meanwhile, we’re continuing to dispatch the update to other Windows Phone models. As has been the case, the software patch is being sent out on a rolling schedule. You’ll see a message on your phone when it’s available.

During the past week the engineering team has pinpointed and fixed problems that were preventing a small percentage of Windows Phones from installing the February software patch. We apologize again for the delay and continue looking for ways to improve the update process.

There are already some reports from Omnia users who received it.
