Nope that's not the case, it's actually a lie. Last year right before the phone release they told journalists (including the whiny Mr. Paul Thurrot) that carrier have ability to "block" update. Now they are saying it's not true and Thurrot make shit up but in the very same blog, they pretty much admit that but of course hiding behind mumbo jumbo PR talk, such as carrier can't block but they could ask us for different date for update (wtf if that's not blocking) and they can also ask that the update be bundle with the next. (so that essentially the same as blocking but of course not according to MS). They said their platform would be different than fragmentation of Android but it seems we are in the same boat.

There will be delay for Mango, (notice they have not give a date, so they can claim there is no delay) but speculation is that October or November when next round of phone get release. May be new phone will have Mango, but I am sure those with carrier brand phone will probably get them in 2012.
 
Hm, that's kind of depressing. I really do like the platform because they do understand how important user experience is.

They need to build a Zune HD-like Nexus device.

Most people like the platform. Except for OEMs, carriers and Microsoft.

Nokia's had NFC in its phones for like 3 years. I mean, is there any technology that Nokia hasn't had in its phones for 3 years before Apple and Google?

Yep. I'd like to move to the platform when I'm forced to switch phones for precisely this reason (it's also the reason I doubt I'll ever go Android) but as someone who's been following the phone since it was first revealed, it doesn't seem pretty...

derp herp, my issue is not with what they've already stated, but with the second part which is the fact that they wrote that it would take up to 4 addition weeks for it to hit everyone, which puts it in April. No troll, just the facts as written by that one particular operator.

Chris Walsh, from the ChevronWP7 team, posted a way to unbrand any HTC WP7 device. That way, you'll receive the NoDo update instantly. All you need is a developer unlocked (or ChevronWP7 unlocked, check XDA) phone from HTC and some files. Follow the instructions at the blog.

So NoDo was finally released this morning. Well, for the EU people anyway (don’t get me started).

Windows Phone 7, by default, stores your operator identifier in a sneaky registry key, which is checked by the Windows Update Client running on the phone. This identifier is then used to check if the updates have been approved for your operator. If they are slow, like Telstra here is in Australia, you’re going to be waiting a long time.

So, let’s tell you how you can “un-brand” (this won’t remove the boot splash screen) your phone so it appears to be a generic handset to the Update Servers.

Yeah. I'd definitely pick up one just to use Zune Pass and then play around with the apps. I don't understand why they didn't release a new Zune with access to the WP7 marketplace already, something to compete with the iPod Touch. There is so much buzz around this product from people who usually detest Windows; why the fuck can't the upper management at Microsoft see potential of this new platform?

Edit: No seriously I mean it. If Microsoft can't work a deal with the carriers, then the next logical step is to make a gaming handheld device. Indeed XBox division should have put out something years ago as a counterpart to the DS and PSP.
 
HTC has always been amazing about getting rom's leaked and stuff. If only someone could figure out a way to unbrand the Focus, which HAS to be one of the top selling wp7 devices on the market, I'd jump all over it.
 
What dedicated news app you guys using? I've got AP and Huffington Post so far. Wondering if there's others you're using that are fairly good.

Rivera unbranded his Focus and got the February update, but didn't get the March update yet. He thinks MS is blocking all Samsung devices. My phone is unbranded and I'm still waiting.

I'm going to go ahead and try the procedure.. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get NoDo before other at&t customers..

After removing the carrier branding, I received the pre-nodo update.

Guess MS isn't rolling out NoDo to US samsung devices yet.

This doesn't seem to work for users in Australia.

I did it just now and got the February update, but not the March. Which seems to be the case for everyone. I'm pretty confident that it will result in getting the update before other Telstra users though.

you have a windows phone, so you cant be a geek. For a geek it is probably the most boring gadget ever. Nothing that you can do with it, even iPhone is more geeky then WP7.

well i have a HTC HD2 with the latest MIUI Rom. I think you cant get much geekier :P Well you could of course write your own OS for your self made phone.

It was pretty easy.. basically, you need to unlock your device so that it is seen as a developer device..

After you get the device unlocked, then you'll want to use the application deployment tool and deploy the app you can download from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910911

As for the editor, It works, but you have to know where you are going..

Here's the location - hklm\system\platform\DeviceTargetingInfo\MobileOperator

1. type that into the location blank in the samsung registry editor at the link above
2. Make sure the "String" radio button is selected
3. Hit the "Read" button

If the value comes back as ATT-US then you're looking at the correct value

To "un-brand" your focus, just blank out the value box and click the "Write" button.

After that, I clicked "read" again just to make sure it was empty when I did, the value box just said GetString:

with nothing after it. Then I rebooted my phone and connected it to WP7 connector on my mac and had it look for updates. It found the pre-nodo update and started the update process.

I mean sure it's frustrating for things to get delayed but this isn't brand new software, this isn't going to affect anyone's lives in any appreciable fashion. It's a couple of performance tweaks to a phone. Maybe it's... not worth following to this degree.

This is a joke. They delayed the update for months, wanted to test everything with everyone involved (again) and now that it's finally done and everyone is ready, it still takes a month to roll out the update? What the fuck?

It's not about copy and paste, it's about customer support and reliability. Windows Phone 7 v1.0 is in an incomplete, buggy state and needs bug fixes. I think most people knew this and were okay with that, since Microsoft promised to release updates ASAP, but five months without one single bug fix is pathetic.

I don't think its an issue of Microsoft not caring about what happens outside of the US, most of the people with the updates are outside of the US. I've also read that AT&T won't be seeing the update anytime soon as well.

I've been as understanding as I can be, and for as long as I can be. I don't really care about what's in the software update. I'm just starting to get nervous that the software updates will be closer to Android than it is to iOS. Right now its looking like 99% Android.

It's not about copy and paste anymore. In fact, it probably never was about copy and paste to begin with. It's about how Microsoft handles updates and how they handle their Windows Phone 7 platform in general.

Microsoft has shipped an unfinished product and early adopters believed it when Microsoft said everything was going to be okay/better shortly. Months after release we still have buggy phones and Microsoft still thinks it's okay to just be silent about everything. They've failed when they tested the update procedure and told us they'll make sure that everything is going to be okay next time (NoDo). Now it's time for NoDo and Microsoft is failing again. Early adopters will be the last people who get the NoDo update. The last people who will have access to phones without annoying bugs that should have been eliminated before the product even shipped.

There's absolutely no reason to trust Microsoft anymore. I'd call myself an early adopter (got my phone shortly after release) and there's not one single thing Microsoft has done right since the launch of the platform. Not having Cut&Paste is just one small piece of a huge puzzle that is Microsoft's horrible handling of the Windows Phone 7 platform.

I've been hyped for WP7 since the day it was announced, but im starting wonder if it's worth all this waiting and anger.

Hell, I know it's early days and all but im starting to think Apple is the only smartphone manufacturer has its shit together.

For now I'm still backing Microsoft but i may become a turncoat when Apple announces its new hardware.

That's a fact. Apple released iOS 4.2 bug fixes, 4.3 and is going to release 4.3.1 soon. All that before everyone gets that minor WP7 update.

For all we know, the update isn't even officially released.
 
Why can't we get the update through Zune? I'm in Norway until June, so I've unsimlocked my Omnia 7, but I just have a prepayed card with no data here, how am I supposed to get this update?

Zune is the only way to get updates for WP7 and you need an unbranded device. Removing the sim-lock is not enough, because the phone identifies itself as SFR Omnia 7.

I used Weave for my news and I IGN for video games news mostly for video and pictures since I don't care much for their review. I also use AP, I wish they would update the app so that it would update the news as soon as you open the app (may be to avoid data fee?) but it's strange to see headline from yesterday. For movies and stuff I used Flixster and IMDB (beautiful app).

The best part of Windows Phone 7 for me is the newsreader.

It's actually Orange for mine. Is it possible to remove the branding? Is the only way to get updates for me is to go back to them once I'm back in France in late August? I'm currently in a legal dispute with them, I have no wish whatsoever to give them any more money..

You will just need for Microsoft to flick the switch for the Orange/<your phone> and then you should be able to update.

There have been ways to unbrand HTC and LG phones so far.

Does unbranding a phone also remove the sim-lock? The codes to remove the sim-lock of a phone can be pretty expensive for something so little... Was just removing is there's a way to do it without paying.

Depending on where you live it can be free (in France, if you've had the phone for at least six months then by law you can get it for free for example), but I got mine on the internet for $20. Not that expensive.
