I figured the Windows Store is getting decent enough to have a dedicated thread for applications. The best way to share application links is to use an application called Clipboard.

Clipboard (http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/app/d12111fe-bfa8-4050-96c1-c6571e1f3230)

Just go to the store listing page and click share-clipboard and then paste it. (if you have the application you are trying to share, easiest way to get to the store page is just to go to the app settings-rate and review and then hit cancel). A lot of these applications are not really needed since metro IE10 has flash support (for example, hulu, amazon video and Netflix all work fine in metro IE10) but of course sometimes that isn't the best experience.

I was just about to ask people what are some recommended apps from the Windows Store in the W8 OT because the Windows Store search appears like it's borked, but I guess I'll start here. Thanks, OP!

Been really disappointed by the W8 app store... seems like it's either 3+ years old, just a website replacement (don't get the point of using Amazon or NewEgg App on your computer or tablet), or just total crapware garbage.

I only used a few applications on my desktop, on my tablet though I use all of the ones mentioned. As for Amazon and Newegg, the websites work fine but since they are free i'll take the better experience.

should also add skulls of the shogun to the list.... easily the best game on there so far (and the multiplayer is pretty close to perfection)

Surprised to only see one mention of Giant Bomb on here. It has a live tile, notifications, and everything but the forums, comments (not that you would want those), and direct downloads.

I would recommend Discourse as an alternative RSS app. It supports the usual features (Reader integration, customizable sections, offline reading) and has a slick looking UI that automatically formats articles to a newspaper like aesthetic and works well in both landscape and portrait. More importantly, it has an Instapaper/Evernote like Share charm that let's you format and save any article without having to actually open the app.

I've been having some fun on the train home from work with Jetpack Joyride, which is free.

Can anyone recommend any other timewasters? I've already downloaded:

The Gunstringer: Dead Man Running
Microsoft Mahjong
Microsoft Solitaire Collection
Microsoft Minesweeper
Wordament
Taptiles
Adera
Pinball FX2

Unfortunately, The Gunstringer and Adera don't run on my laptop (fine on my desktop though), so suggestions have to be relatively simple and suitable for mouse/keyboard.

As you can see, there's a theme there of free stuff (and all have some achievements too, which is nice!).

So after weeks of no downloading a single app I just discovered News Bento which is an incredible News Reader app, fast, good looking (really good looking) and with a great layout, only thing I wish is that it had all the controls in an easier way to identify.

Microsoft puts a video spotlight on several Windows 8 apps

It seems that after a rush of new Windows 8 apps became available in the Windows Store just after the OS launched, there has been a slow down of new apps posted on the electronic storfront. Today, Microsoft posted up five new videos on its Windows YouTube channel that put the spotlight on some major Windows 8 apps, perhaps as a way to encourage others to make their own apps.

The videos look at the Box, AccuWeather, USA Today, StumbleUpon and Allrecipes apps for Windows 8. Each video has interviews with the people behind each company and their corresponding apps as they talk about specific features that have developed.

I just signed up for NextIssue and I'm loving it. It's basically like Netflix for magazines. The Windows 8 app can be a little buggy but when it works it's fun reading magazines on my tablet. The quality is much better than that Zimio thing I tried a while ago.

http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-US/app/next-issue-magazines/05208b7b-87c0-44c1-ada1-50fbb7eb0a79

Apparently the service is US only so as a Canadian I couldn't see it in the store but I have access to a US credit card for subscribing and simply changed my region to US to download the app. After that it works fine.

Protip: If you subscribe to the paper version of Entertainment Weekly, Money Magazine, or other mags by that publisher, you can get a free digital version through NextIssue. It's one benefit of the subscription that was previously only available on iOS and Android.
