Winning Eleven 8 North America Release Thread (Finally!)

Thanks man. That's not so bad. I can easily hit it for strategies, and while I appreciate R2, I can play quite a bit before using it, and by then I'll most likely be used to it. Having triggers as the speed boosts instead of the R1 and L1's might be a tad tricky, but considering Xbox's faster load times, unlimited replay and season saving and improved graphics (albeit slightly) I think I'll stick with my plan.

The guy who reviewed WE8 (Perry) gave WE7 a 9.1 and WE6 a 9.0.

I actually compared his Closing Comments from the WE7 review, and the WE8 one is MUCH more masturbatory. I would agree that WE8 is unquestionably the better game, but I'm thinking that he's become so high on the series because of experience and skill development. He can probably appreciate some of the intricacies of the game that have always been there.

L2 and R2

L2 is just for strategy (ie, L2 + X = counter-attack), which doesn't require an intuitive placement at all.

R2 is for quick step-overs, side-step, pausing the dribble, super cancel (R1+R2), loft on free kicks, and a couple other things.

In short, if you appreciate any of the numerous things that the one button can do, get an adapter or the PS2 version.

Damn, I want to play with PS2 controls but now I'm reading that the international version had some bad slowdown issues. The IGN review talks about some lag when initiating animations on the PS2 version that isn't on the XBOX version.

Fifty, I think you can adjust, but it'll forever be a handicap if you want to take advantage of those skills. Each R2 function becomes instinctive and often needs to be done immediately. So it helps that your finger is permanently resting on it for such a case. With the black/white buttons, you'd need to remove your thumb from the A,B,X,Y setup.

The R1 trigger is supposed to be a fine replacement, from what I've heard.

Argh you're so right. I wish the game was only PS2 now that they've decided to keep it offline ;p Would've made this easier.

Seriously, I keep changing my mind every few hours here.

Haha no, you're pointing out valid issues. I guess I'm just looking for one thing to push me over the hump. Haven't found it yet, for either side. If it's the PS2, it'll be because of the controls, but I won't know if the Xbox controls are awful until I try them ;o

Gamerankings is lumping together the Jpn and US versions of WE8.

Consider NTSC UK's review of the Jpn version, which they gave a 7/10. Their complaints?

However, the slowdown does spoil proceedings, and the proliferation of the franchise means that an improved version of the game should be available in 6 short months time, and those that can wait surely should.

- framerate issues have been mostly resolved for WE8I
- the US gets one game in the series each 12 months

Dumb dumb dumb dumb

People that don't look carefully enough could easily get discouraged

:lol Yeah I saw that review a long time ago and it's funny b/c it's almost pure praise. As you can see though, the big sites are mostly loving this game, and rightly so, so it won't be long before that weirdo score gets nullified; I think the 9.4 from IGN could really do some good in terms of getting people talking.

Maybe I should shut up. ;)

no, you are bringing up really good points.

the black and white buttons are an unacceptable substitute for the l2/r2 buttons in winning eleven. it rather use the gamecube pad than the xbox pad for this game. it actually worked extremely well for WE6FE (the last WE game i played).

i just read the IGN review for the ps2 version. kind of pointless, because i allready know that im going to love this game. its also just making me jones harder for this game that i cant afford untill next week.

looking forward to impressions from GAFfers. cant wait to purchase the GOD of all sports titles. :D

9.4 at IGN? Daamn! Respect! :D

I was amazed IGN (as they are american) gave WE7 9.1, but 9.4 for WE8 is even better!

Yes; I remember one of the biggest challenges to capturing a great goal would be scoring in time to get bo the move and the goal. :lol

:lol Yeah...I was playing WE7 just now, and did a Maradonna like run with Reyes that lasted almost twenty seconds and almost scored. But what good is that to me when I can only save the last 3 seconds of it? :lol

I'll probably go with the XBox version initially...if I can't get used to the controls, I'll just trade it in with a couple other games for GT4 and grab the PS2 version. Truth be told I don't use the L2/R2 buttons that much anyway. :lol

The R2 button is QUINTESSENTIAL for any advanced WE player. With that in mind, it's gonna be the PS2 version for me.

For reference does anyone know exactly whats changed from PES4 - i'm specifically talking about the PS2 version since PES4 suffered a bit from slowdown which affected the game on some stadiums (the game clock would crawl).

Last year WE7:I (us release) fixed the stutter bug and had other tweaks from PES3 (Like the hand ball thing already mentioned).

Im just wondering whether if WE8:I ps2 is the J league rev of the engine which pretty much had the slowdown issues sorted out.

One of the biggest thing that R2 does... is the lateral one-two pass. While it can be done by L1+X, but i find it's a great option to use R2, as you have a choice whether you want the player to run or not.

Also Super Cancel is (R1+R2) is a very important tool, which could decide win or lose against highly skilled WE players.

I have to admit that I don't use R2 for dribbling that much - that for WE8, stop and go works pretty good. I mean, if you don't have good enough ACC, then you should not even try dribbling that is. However R2 has proven its importance over the years for me - and that's why I'll be sticking to PS2 ver, and perhaps get Xbox ver out of curiosity.

March 3rd, can't come fast enough... :(

The game will be mine by 5 pm today. Hopefully I won't be the only one with it. :)

I think I'm going with the PS2

Fry's has both versions for 29.99. Even though I barely touched WE7 and ended up giving it away, I'll probably pick it up for this price.

For me there was no problem at all adjusting to using the black button. I actually like it better then R2 now! Tapping a button with my thumb feels more natural.

Anyways, here's a goal I scored with the help of the black button. :D

:lol NICE. I canÂ’t wait to do some of that stuff. IÂ’m sure buttons v. triggers comes down to preference, just like analog v. digital, though obviously right now there will be more resistance to buttons since people are pretty set in their ways (e.g. the review saying the X-Box version is basically not worth buying b/c of the controls).

And the tradition continues...

Actually managed to grab the very last PS2 copy left.

Now take a photo of yourself shitting on that copy and buying the superior Xbox version, as I did! Heheh. I figured that I can get used to the controls, and unlimited replays saved and slightly superior animation speed was worth it. Anyway, as long as you're buying WE, and not FIFA, you're making the right choice. :)

I would if I had a Fry's. Actually I probably wouldn't considering how much I was anticipating this game. ;) The "situational training" mode is funny because it basically tells you all the stuff you would do in previous WEs just figuring it out. I wish they had a WE Veteran training that just introduced all the new stuff, e.g. I don't think the hold X pass to a far player is outlined anywhere in the in-game training. That's huge!

Superior!? Superior?

There's only one superior that matters:

Haha j/k.

Honestly the deal-breaker for me was all the friends I play WE with who wouldn't be able to use my adapter and thus be stuck with the awful, despicable X-Box controls (j/k II).

By the way, the Xbox version allows you to swap button commands. If you think you'll use what was once R2 (special commands) more than swap player, you could switch swap player (L) to black and have special command easier to use.

Man, this is great!

Just change the black button to L and you have both of the "R's" on the triggers. I don't manually change that often, and when I do, I almost always have time, unlike with the special commands. Changing black and L makes a world of difference.

When I go to save a replay I see numbers 1-35 (one having already been taken up by the options file) I'm guessing that it means I can only have 35 things saved. (ML data, options, replays, etc)

By the way, I sent you a PM.

Wow, I really love the new talent search feature, along with the ability to start off with a slightly customized ML team. How it works is that you can cut up to 3 players (from the original gang......No, I won't cut MINANDA) and then use those points to sign 1-3 new players. It's great. I cut 2 keepers and someone else and signed Dida.

Astrolad, whats the framerate like in the PS2 version?..i know its not too important but just wondered if they've improved it over PES4.

From what I've played (about an hour), it looks good. I think there might have been a little slowdown in one spot, but I'm not even sure about that as it was very brief and there wasn't any significant slowdown during the entire game I played. I'll definitely notice more closely the more I play though. I heard they cleaned up those problems for the NA release and that appears to be true though I'll have to play a few more hours to really get a sense.

Preliminary, the X Box version is seriously busted. There is some major overscan going on or something. I have a widescreen 30" Sony, and the sides of the screen are chopped off. For instance, when I select my team, the H in home is half missing. I have tried all zoom mondes, but what makes it obvious is when it is in "normal mode" i.e. not stretched it still looks like this. Adjusting the screen setting options does not help at all. Has anyone else seen this?

EDIT: Halo 2 did not exhibit this problem on my system. I'm going to check some video settings in the dashboard to see if that helps.

YES. One solution is to, on your dash, turn 480p, 720p, and 1080i to OFF. that fixes it, obviously it will only be in 480i then though. Funny thing is if you only put 720p on, its still cut off but not as much, so it must be doing SOMETHING with 720p.

Godspeed, Fifty. joao is an unusual case. ;) Oh, and I don't think that video demonstrates any functionality, but it was still pretty!

I've played 3 ML games already, and I'm doing fine. I cut three players at the start of ML (with the new create a team feature) and used those points to pay for Del Piero. It's hilarious having him on my division two squad with mostly scrubs (except for Barota). It's like watching an older brother beat up on his little brother...watching him zig and zag around these mooks. He's assisted on all 4 of my goals, all of them to my main man Barota! This game is so awesome. :D

Hmm... I'm new to this series so it will take some getting used to. For example, the video I saw with the sweet dribble and score is something I just can't duplicate. I can't get the hang of dribbling jukes. I watched the training vid, and while I can do basic things like stop and go, or slow dribble, the R2 button just isn't doing anything. Are there any secret button combos I can do that the training mode doesn't show?

This should help (all PES/we8 moves):

www.pesmoves.com (3 pages of moves, plus videos for each move)

I'm not sure if you've done situational training yet but you should, still I'll discuss a few important moves. To do the ever useful sidestep, just hit r2 and 90 degrees away from whichever direction you're going at the same time. So if you're going left, hit up and r2, then it helps to hit diagonal/left (forward) again quickly to do a nifty little dodgy move and keep going forward (imo it's easiest to learn this on the d-pad b/c of the 90 degree requirement). This is a very useful move against the comp., but in WE no move works in all situations, you need different moves for different situations so keep that in mind. Also, much of the time, slight directional changes will accomplish more than any move, so play with those as well. To do a normal fake shot hit shoot then pass, except you need to hit pass literally a split second after shoot- I just roll my finger over the two buttons quickly. There are also double and triple fakes for when you get a little better that are pretty cool. Take a look at that list, get out on the practice field and let me know if you have any trouble with them (some are a bit tricky at first) and I'll try to help. Also it's key to remember many moves you don't need to use often. Like I said, a lot can be done without any moves at all, but at certain times they are very, very useful and you will get a hang of when these times are the more you play.

Got the game today, and it's as good as I was expecting (played it a good 3 hours).

It seems my playing style has changed a bit from part 7. I'm doing more low crosses, the through-ball is workin much better for me, and Ronaldhino scores 50% of the shots he takes. :)

Post more goal vids!

for someone who's never played the WE series: Is this sort of the "spiritual" successor to the ISS games? if not, for someone who loved the shit out of ISS for the n64, how does this compare?

ISS64 and 98 were the more arcadey alternatives to the WE series way back when, so they play a little differently. WE was a little more sophisticated (IIRC) and since then (6 years) it has become very deep and advanced. So, there's a learning curve. Some people honestly will get turned off. But I'll maintain that if you've ever loved a soccer game (especially ISS which has its similarities to WE), you have to give WE a shot. You probably won't fall in love immediately, but if you use the training mode and compete on the easier difficulties (which is fun by itself), you'll eventually become comfortable with the game and *I guarantee* will come to love it.

I tried disabling 720p to no avail, the sides were still chopped off. I said F this and took it back for the PS2 version.

Ok. :D

Here's a little montage of some of the first goals I scored in this game. It shows the new "hold-button-to-pass-to-the-furthest-player" feature, and a nice use of the black button on the last goal. link

Here is a nice Figo Freekick. link

And here is a good use of a another very useful feature: the lob. link

Thanks for the info. I've gotten the hang of the R2 double tap maneuver. Also, doing a 360 on the right stick does a crazy dribble that's flawless when you have 2 defenders on you. I'll try the fake shot and pass tonight and let you know if I get it.

Glad you people like the game. It's seriously the best sports game ever. And don't forget this was voted as GAF's own Sports Game of The Year! :D

I've probably put 200h in to game so far. I always learn new stuff when I play against the CPU but the real deal is against a friend. It's so addicting it's scary.

Btw, I have the official kits for the most english teams thanks to a friend.
