JJ Abrams is making this, believe it or not, an alternate universe Trek. Alot of things aren't going to be the same.

Apparently Spock (played by Zachary Quinto from Heroes) will be one of the few remaining Vulcans after their planet is destroyed by the Romulans. Also Spock will have emotions....

Make of that what you will.

Source?

And look how well that turned out.

Anyway, wasn't spock's mother alive during the TNG era? That would make her really old... None of this makes any sense.

EDIT: Or was that a different wife? ...
Yeah, by TNG Spock's mom had died and Sarek had remarried to another human.

I prefer to think of Star Trek as more like watching tar congeal.

The main scoop about the alternate universe Trek came from AICN about a month or two ago. But someone I know
worked with them a few years ago
someone who is/was working with somebody that was a 'higher up' during the UPN/Enterprise days and told him about the ship redesign amongst other things.....

Make of it what you will. In these blogging/fan forum days the studios make a point of releasing a ton of red herrings to confuse fans in the early days of a film's production and development. Apparently WB have been running riot with their JLA movie feeding all sorts of garbage to different people to keep the fans guessing.

Not that long, I think they only lived to be about 100 or so. Isn't Spock like 300 or so during NG?

Edit: Beaten.

Yeah 100 is the average life span in trek I think for Humans. Rare exceptions are like Dr. Mccoy who is like 140 years old due to some weird issue they cant explain with organs etc regenerating.

Im a somewhat Trekkie I admit. Though im digging Shatners alternate Timeline for Generations and Beyond more then Berman and crew

His purpose isn't to be completely emotionless, but to attempt to be emotionless.

His purpose within the narrative is to be a counter-point to Kirk's impulsive and irrational behavior. An emotional Spock could ruin the interplay between two of the most important characters.

It's that conflicting, and enduring friendship which made original trek so great.

I didn't look at it quite as a Kirk/Spock duality. More like McCoy and Spock were the angel and the devil presenting opposite views over each shoulder.

Certainly Spock shouldn't be overly emotional, though, but for example the end of Star Trek II pulls of a non-automaton Spock well.

I expect this movie to be a trainwreck going by these alternate universe spoilers. If it turns out good i will be pleasantly surprised. 10 bucks says it will start with one of JJ Abrams patented 72 hours earlier title cards, which = boredom for entire running time. It'll probably also have love triangles galore. God help us all.

Some new plot details:

- Romulans from the future find and use the Guardian of Forever (address: City on the Edge of Forever) to go back in time to kill the ruinous Romulan nemesis, James Tiberius Kirk.

- Old Spock (Leonard Nimoy) then travels back through time to warn Young Spock (Zach Quinto) of the plot to kill Kirk.

- When the two Spocks first meet, it is before Young Spock has met Young Kirk (Christopher Pine).

- When we first meet Young Kirk, he is dealing with Starfleet’s no-win Kobayashi Maru test.

Great stuff. That's how you do a prequel.

Okay. Thread saved.
When Kirk takes the Kobayashi Maru test, should he cheat on it, like he did in series canon?

He didn't cheat. He changed the conditions of the test. Got a commendation for original thinking.

No, the thing that will make the prequel is if we learn in one scene that McCoy went on his date with Dax.
