Trailer

Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. The film stars Colin Farrell (“Total Recall”), Jessica Brown Findlay (TV’s “Downton Abbey”), and Oscar® winners Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”), William Hurt (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”), Eva Marie Saint (“On the Waterfront”) and Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”). “Winter’s Tale” also introduces young newcomers Ripley Sobo and Mckayla Twiggs (both from Broadway’s “Once”). The film marks the directorial debut of Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”), who also wrote the screenplay, based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Helprin.

Looks like it could be terrible or awesome. Anyone read the book?

I've read the book, but it was several years ago. My recall of the story made it seem unfilmable, so I have no idea how they are going to make it into a movie, because the story I remember made the winter seem to last for years, and it was nearly perpetual for the adult portion of the lead character's story. I do remember really enjoying the book but what I saw in my mind and what I saw in that short clip looked nothing alike...

The book is awesome, but it's pretty nuts. I honestly don't know how well it will translate to film.

It looks like they're focusing almost entirely on the Peter/Beverly storyline even though it takes up only about a fourth of the book.

Awww shit it's got Lady Sybil... will have to watch. Yea that's right gaf, I watch Downton Abbey and I'll probably watch this as well.

So, OP, why would you post that Will Smith is in the movie, if he is not even in any trailer or any marketing?

You didn't figure out that it is supposed to be a secret?

Don't see Will Smith.

Will watch for Colin. He has come a long way and seems like a very genuine guy. With how he is on Ellen, how can you not love him?

I do know that this film was originally supposed to be out by the end of this year, but it got bumped back to February. That is generally a very bad sign.

But you should all still read the book, regardless of the quality of this film.

Is my memory in the ballpark about what I remember? I thought the
story of childhood in the swamps of New Jersey
was interesting, as well as the
long journey, I think, to upstate NY, with the horse drawn sleigh
, but I was certain at the time you couldn't make a movie of it...

Yeah, you're remembering it correctly, I'd say. The plot meanders all over the place. It's going to be tough to convey that in film. I'm guessing they won't even try.

But yeah, I loved all of the fun and interesting magic realism bits in the novel. I wonder if they're even going to address things like the
cloud wall and the Lake of the Coheeries.

Oh neat, I just saw the trailer a couple minutes ago for the first time. Some parts seemed interesting
surprise time travel?
and other scenes looked a little painful
Farrell/Crowe horse-off!

This looks like the kind of thing that I'll be happy to watch when it's on TV eventually.

You can see why I'm skeptical about it. I did really like the book, and I've enjoyed the other books I've read from Halperin; he has an incredibly lyrical, and wonderfully vivid writing style, but I'll likely now have to first re-read the book, and then see the movie, because my curiosity is already getting the best of me...

Horse duels!

Looks like pretty boring fare. Not as terrible as those holiday romcom rush job movies, but nothing exactly hooking me. Reminds me of The Fountain with the premise of age-old love, but that's about it.

I need to check out his other work. This was my first Helprin novel and I haven't gotten a chance to read any others. I've heard that A Soldier of the Great War is especially good.
