WipEout Co-Creator Seeking it's License to Craft New Game

Formula Fusion looks great but its handling and physics right now are abysmal and nothing like Wipeout I'm afraid. I was hyped about it but recently tried it out and my hype was quickly deflated as it is hard to imagine that the devs have the right feel for it if the handling is this bad, even if it is still in an early stage right now.

Red:Out looks promising, very intrigued by that one.

Thumper looks batshit crazy and awesome, even though it's quite a different beast.

But DISTANCE... Distance is the one that has captured my heart and perhaps even taken the place that Wipeout used to have for me. Highly highly highly recommend it. It's not the same as Wipeout, it's more of a futuristic trackmania with some a crazy cyberspace survival twist to it. But it pushes all the buttons Wipeout used to push for me. I'm immersed in its gorgeous and unique looking sci-fi world, I'm hooked on its deep and sophisticated controls and physics that are difficult to master but never feel unfair and always just make sense to you and it's got fantastically gorgeous level design plus a really cool 'story' mode.

All that being said... Man I do hope Formula Fusion does still go the right way eventually. That'd be amazing.

This is how I felt at first. But that changes when you try it out and come to grips with the vehicles' side/front/back-thrusters (+ flying mechanics) that make the controls even deeper and more satisfying to pull of maneuvers with than Wipeout. And I'm a hardcore Wipeout fan since the early PSX days.

Was trying the new build of Formula Fusion yesterday, looks great but man the handling is not clicking at all, nothing like WipEout and that is fair, it is its own game, but it is not what I am looking for.

What I would personally change is stronger air brakes leading to a driftier model and a lot more lateral movement, is a little like WipEout Fusion at the moment but I guess the clue is in the name?

Yes I go into that in the video, there is progress here but still a way to go. Either way I enjoyed what I played, potential here now.

Formula Fusion looks pretty cool... but the design isn't quite there, something about it still screams "off brand Wipeout".

even the ship designs and pickups really aren't as clever and beautiful as WHD. I love that these guys are making this. but Wipeout was my first love on PSX and it's just a very high bar to hit.

FF devs, don't worry, I will still buy your game ;)

Didn't Formula Fusion get Designer's Republic on board?

That's huge, IMO.

Just waiting impatiently for a PS4 release. I still think they should port HD/Fury, though.

Those with their hopes on Formula Fusion will be disappointed, the floaty handling and bland speed oriented tracks lack the emphasis on precision and tight complex track design that Wipeout is known for.

Redout controls pretty similarly to the original Wipeout games but it's a shame to regress to something without the physics engine of Wipeout HD and 2048. The physics of the craft added a lot of depth to the core mechanics of those games and providing subtle instances to acquire boost and generally making the ships feel more 'real'.

Redout looks the most promising though, but when I spoke to them in 2014 they said they had no plans for online multiplayer, so that'll be disappointing if still true.

OT: Why doesnt Sony just do an 'Activision remaster' of Wipeout HD onto PS4 - I think the assets are good enough and the dynamic scalar it already has in place would ensure 1080p/60fps without any trouble...

I mean, Sony didn't lose anything either because it was funded by Kickstarter. With this method they have literally nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I'm very curious how the professional-indie Kickstarter relationship will go as things progress towards it...

On one hand, it seems brilliant: independent developers take on the responsibility and the spoils of attaching a license to a successor project they already want to make, major brands stay alive, marketing still can focus on the AAA internal titles it only has time to give a damn about, and great games come gamers' way. Amplitude worked out that way, the new Monster Boy worked out, Square Enix is experimenting with brands via its Collective initiative, and on and on.

On the other hand, this thread alone shows how rough it'd be to choose who would and would not be apt for an officially-branded Wipeout game. There are dozens of "spiritual successors" to Wipeout, some of them from minds who made the originals, and not all of them would be up to carrying the Wipeout mantle. Does Sony grant the name to designers who have credits making real games in the brand, even if it's hard to tell if they could make that lightning strike twice? Does Sony grant the name to a project that feels exactly like Wipeout in prototype form, even if more ambitious works from more reputable teams exist? Does Sony embrace the indie spirit and let them all use Wipeout, let the gamers decide what's quality and what's not? Does Sony not grant anybody the license because it'd be dangerous to put the name on a game they can't control even if they have no current plans for the brand? And for developers, do you sign with Sony and potentially lose some revenue in a deal-share (though a brand like this would absolutely bring eyeballs.) And what about other platforms, can indie versions of brands show up on PC or Mobile (or otherwise?) as well as PlayStation platforms?

Curious times for game publishers. That said, I wish they were more aggressively exploring these options rather than fearing the ramifications, because I think a lot of game designers are itching to explore some of their favorite franchises but the publishers are holding onto even dead IP as their babies.

Dear Damn, Sony!

Formula Fusion looks promising but haven't played it.

I'm sceptical any small fragmented team can pull off a real deal wipeout or clone though All these ex wipeout people should join together to make the real deal whether it be under license or a new ip.

Only barely related, but I was driving from Liverpool to my work earlier this morning (a journey I make quite often) and only just noticed that there's a mural on the old Littlewoods building to WipEout:

What a lovely nod to the iconic franchise from my home city, I loved it.

Formula Fusion still seems like the closest thing. It even has tDR working on it, so aside from the more curvaceous craft design, it basically looks like a new wipEout would, I think.

Why is the license so important? It'd be great to have the old craft manufacturers, sure, but I think the new manufacturers in FF look just as good.

^ Jesus, that's amazing! The ZONE craft drawn on a building. Nice!
Can you take a hires shot of it?

Probably haven't got a good enough camera sorry :(

It's on the way in to Liverpool City Centre if you ever want to see it yourself. Quite impressive too since the building is pretty big.

BallisticNG is more or less Wipeout....

Anyway i though Formula Fusion was from the some of the people who made Wipeout??

This is on sale for about a tenner atm, and I have to say I'm quite surprised it looks really good visually, music is good, tracks are decent and it controls pretty well too. Just missing the side-shift for me.

Setting aside my concerns for how Formula Fusion appears to take a bit too much inspiration from the WipEout game it's seemingly named after...

Why is it that footage used to promote the game appears to be played by someone who's simply not adept at it? The way to sell me on a spiritual WipEout successor isn't to show me footage of the ship riding the walls on every single corner. I'm considering picking it up just to try it out for myself, but the footage has me worried that it may be a FAST Racing Neo type scenario, where the reason everyone seems to be riding the walls, is because the handling's simply not well matched to the track designs, making clean runs prohibitively difficult (and potentially slower).

Yeah I get what you're saying but I jumped right in with the practice mode and tried the 4 tracks that were unlocked and had no issues with most of the walls after a lap or two.
