Wired: Nintendo’s New 3DS Underwhelms at Tokyo Game Show

I'm doing my first run of Xenoblade right now. But it's going so well that I can see wanting to do a second run on the go so I can get more time with it. That's the main draw for me as of right now because I don't play MH games.

It's just a modest evolution of an existing product designed to boost and recharge sales. They never intended on creating anything revolutionary. Just a slight update to their existing machine much like the DSi. Nintendo's next true hand held will (hopefully) be the real game changer.

Contrary to the article, as someone who's purchased only one iteration of the 3DS so far, I'm very interested in this New 3DS. The improved, and larger, screens, and better battery are pretty much all I need. I've got one of those Nyko extender battery packs on my OG 3DS now, and it makes it too big and heavy.

His bit about the stick positioning is directly counter to what some other people thought of it, saying it was in a really unexpectedly intuitive and easy to reach position. I'm sure it'll depend on the person, and I wonder where I'll land personally.

think the OP didn't played it himself, so he rant on it like any lurkers on the internet, imo.

I think Shane wasn't feeling it on 8-4 'cast either.

Clickbait headline.

That's how gaming journalism works.

Reading the article, I was surprised about all the positive things he mentions. The Nr.1 feature of the 3DS - the glasses free 3D effect - now finally works as intended because it tracks your face position and adjusts itself to it; how the hell is that "underwhelming"? Sounds freakin' amazing to me. What else could you possible want from a hardware revision?

Also, since his impression of the c-nub is contrary to other reports saying it works well, I will hold my judement for when I lay my hands on it myself.

What a terrible, terrible title. Taking your own personal impressions and extrapolating them to the general show-going public? Awful.

I follow Daniel on Twitter and he's always a bit of a sourpuss. Almost always complaining about something or another. I think he hates living in Japan but is stuck there.

It may not be attractive to him, but it's being launched with a "new" MoHu. That alone will attract current 3DS and soon to be new owners to the new model.

Pretty much. Article author seemed to not be able to think beyond games on the market today. Complaining about additional buttons cuz they are not 'needed'. Well to each their own... but im still super excited! The improved 3d alone would have sold me.

It sounds like they expected a brand new handheld rather than an iteration on the 3ds.

They need to learn to keep their expectations in check.

So the nub is exactly what it looked like. I wonder if Nintendo got a sweet deal on some warehouse full of those things considering the rest of the world realized they were shit 10 years ago

Location looks fine to me, but I have big hands

Has anyone confirmed whether the 3D adjusting works when you move the system closer/further from your eyes? I've only heard people talk about moving it side to side.

I can't use the 3D because I'm usually holding the system too close or too far away for it to work.

Ah, that's correct. Do you remember who he heard it from? Was it the same author?
I think he said it was an indie dev.

You should read the article. The author only complained about the location of the nub.

Shane hadn't tried it, he was relaying negative impressions from someone else who did.

Doesn't Shane now work for Sony? Of course he's gonna rely negatve impressions of it!
I'll probably still buy it just for the improved battery life. (Better speakers too??)

Don't care about Monster Hunter at all.
Same. I like that the 3D seems to be vastly improved, and built in C-Stick, nub or no-nub, is a welcome adition. Gonna finish Snake Eater with this thing.

Same crappy slider pad. I wouldn't get it, unless my xl had like $100 trade in value

Not many changes to warrant paying another 170+ IMO.

I dont understand whay the nub wasnt just a second slide pad, even if it was just smaller. And in a more practical location. Nintendo sometimes man. They have a track record of puting some buttons in uncomfortable locations.

Still not sold on the new one. I will eventually get Xenoblade (even though it is rare) to play on my Wii U, so a portable one would not change much.

Meh - I think that people are expecting too much. It is the same old 3DS with a couple of added bits. I mean, what was he expecting?

You know the nub won't magically control the camera in Snake Eater, right?

I don't really see any huge reason to upgrade, still using my launch 3DS, which works fine. I don't really use the 3D effect that much.

Tell that to HP and Lenovo, they still use the nubs by the truckload. There are a lot of poeple who prefer them to a trackpad. Go figure?

It's better to treat the Super 3DS as the Game Boy Colour, which was a stop gap release until the GBA was released.

it's meant to replace your old 3DS, not sit next to it. I don't quite understand the reasoning

Exactly the Super 3DS is going to replace the entire 3DS line so people who don't have a 3DS won't have that worry.

I want this New 3DS to bomb so hard, so it doesn't get lots of exclusive games. Yet I can't bring myself to believe in this "review".

That's a silly reason to wish for a system to bomb, which it won't.

I always figured that Lenovo kept the red nub on their think pad laptops because middle aged and old customers using them for business hate change.

Actually it will double as a Circle Pad Pro, considering the New3DS also has ZL and ZR. You'll probably have to change your settings to "detect" the presence of a CCP.

I persume the reason you don't use the 3D that much is because of the eyestrain? I believe that is the reason why they made it include headtracking.

I also think the bigger (non XL) screen and better battery life is a boon.
How awesome would it be if Kojima patched MGS3d to use the extra cpu :D
They would probably have to pay him and his team again to make it look as good as the initial demo they released.

None of the hands-ons, this one or others have deterred me from wanting one. It's gonna be exactly what you pay for:an upgraded 3ds with modest improvements and new inputs. We won't really know how much exclusive software the New 3ds will get or how many games will be improved in some way when played on the New 3ds, but the hardware itself is pretty straight forward. I suppose the biggest mystery is how Nintendo will try to leverage Amiibo on the 3ds going forward due to the integration with the New 3ds having a built in reader.

I've got an OG aqua blue 3ds and while it still works fine I'm looking to upgrade to the New 3ds as soon as I can. The much bigger screens of the XL combined with improved 3d are enough for me.

Improved 3d is enough for me. The exclusives are just the cherry on top. And you know there will be at least a few solid exclusives over time.

I don't really see the problem. It's an upgrade that lets games perform a bit better, has a different/nicer design, can add small new features to existing games, and allow you to play a few other ones. It's nothing new or crazy.

Clearly this won't be the case for me, because I actually love the 3D. I never, ever play without it. Full blast all the time, no exceptions, no kidding.

Yup, same for me unless I'm really tired and can't maintain proper positioning, and even then I'll only play for a few minutes because I want the 3D effect.

The second stick being a pointer nub sounds great to me, I always liked pointer nubs on laptops, so this will be good for me.

I think they just up the speed te game runs at via patch and then the game won't run at sub 30fps. The 3 ds version is the best version MGS 3 I have played.

The writer mentioning that he plays all his 3DS games in 2D mode already shows I'm not going to see things in the same way as him.

Does MGS3 use the 2nd stick/did Nintendo say that it essentially replaced it? If so I definitely will buy and play Snake Eater on New 3DS if I ever get one. I've never played it and always wanted to.

Well yeah, because it's basically this.

2 new shoulder buttons are nice, except they are useless to any previous release. The laptop nub is basically useless to all previous releases aside from 10 games. Improved 3D and improved processing power? Whatever, the screens still look awful. Would rather see less revisions and instead get a proper new system with all of this stuff integrated properly instead of tacked on to old obsolete hardware.

I'm kind of excited about improved 3D, tbh. Truly, the current 3D on 3DS sucks. I never use it. However, I can see myself using 3D... sometimes, if the new release is as good as people are saying.
