Wired reports that EVERY game gets dedicated servers on Xbox One

I'm sure these are just virtual cloud servers, just because they are dedicated doesn't mean they aren't sharing physical cpu/memory/hard drive with a bunch of other virtual servers.

IF this is true, and not just a misunderstanding, it's really cool news.

Don't know if it makes up for a mountain of bad news, but it is good to hear.

An amazing next-gen feature seen only in cutting-edge PC releases like Quake 1.

Wow. Can't wait for that Virtua Fighter 6 online

...a game ideally suited to P2P rather than dedicated servers.

Wired are hypothesising that because the XB1 has access to MS's Azure cloud servers they could use them for that, they also say that they could use the servers for processing relieving the XB1 to do other tasks

Oh man, Before, the only things that would've got me to consider purchasing the Xbox One, is if they got rid of the online fee, OR if they gave all games dedicated servers to play on to make the fee worth it. Too bad about the used games thing though, still no buy.

It reads like Wired guessing what the practical uses are not them actually reporting thats what MS is going to do.

Hopefully its true though, obviously.

We get it, PC gaming is light years ahead of console gaming in a lot of areas. Having said that, console wide dedicated server support is new to console gaming, so it is indeed big news if true.

So do we know if Live is still mandatory for multiplayer games or what? Haven't heard anything on that front yet, and if it is, definitely the last straw for me. No PS+ style format, no sale.

If I get any console this gen it's looking to be a PS4. After having only a 360 (plus laptop/PC) all this past gen.

Yeah, that's what it reads like as well:

Perhaps most intriguing, however, is that Xbox One gives game developers the ability to access Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform. That leads to a few obvious and immediate applications: All your downloaded and installed games and achievements are synced to the cloud and can be accessed and played without interruption on any Xbox One you sign in to; stable, dedicated servers for every multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console;

It would be great if it happened though. No more BS host advantage and new host searches in Halo multiplayer.

Well that is slightly more positive news. Maybe Xbox will have huge online games in comparison to the competition.

Dedicated servers for every game?

For how long?

That's good news, but, that seems like expensive upkeep.

Positive news for Xbox and only two pages.

Only negative part to this is the online function of the games are more likely to shut down quicker. It's expensive to upkeep dedicated servers.

They're probably activation servers instead of multiplayer servers. If they don't keep enough activation servers online, a major release could crash the system.

Seems to me they'll just tie into Microsoft's already fucking enormous cloud system. I mean, it's Microsoft - SkyDrives, Hotmail, Office 365, they have shit fucking tons of online servers. They'll just do the same kind of thing for XBOX live or let it access the existing hardware in some way. It really doesn't surprise me so much, they're just taking care of existing infrastructure. No reason to think it's only matchmaking or activation servers.

Well, recap, third party will have Smart Glass, apps and cloud stuff over Xbox One Live, so pretty much they will have a server. They don't say if they are to multiplayer.

Anyway, with cloud servers this is more easy to scale and maintain by the demand.

Throw them a bone to the ground and watch them wag their tail after being kicked in the face.

Xbox fans finest.

Man shame on you guys. This IS a nice feature but it doesn't excuse every other bad one.

I'm afraid to go even further with this and risk a ban... but shame on you.

No wonder this business is getting worse...

Was this confirmed? God damn, they really fucked up today with the misinformation and confusion. Always online, used games, and dedicated servers - we're still not sure what the situation is with any of it.

The only way I see this happening (and not just goddamn matchmaking servers)
is if they are shoving the cost onto the publishers.....so $70 games!

Lol god I can't wait for E3!
