Wired: Resident Evil Degeneration Review

Well, it happened:
Anderson movies: "All suck, Anderson sucks, Capcom should make a CG movie it will own"
Capcom movie: "It sucks, Capcom sucks; fuck them!"

It always the same thing, some assume that because it's cool to play a game, that will be cool to watch it..

And the same thing is going to happen to every other videogame to movie adaptation, no matter if it's from, Hollywood or from the actual game developers....changes will be made, people will be dissapointed..

The problem with this is that it was set up (in my mind) to answer important questions about the series between 3 and 4 (or from T/G virus to Las Plagas). What we got was just an extended cutscene that failed to deliver because of the following points:

-Leon's new woman (what ever her name was) - was no where near endearing enough for the viewer to engage with her - who actually gave a crap about her or her brother's G virus troubles.

-Not enough Leon and Claire together (yes they weren't together in 2 but you would've thought the reunion would've been better)

-No big T/G virus revelation - other than the fact it is still around and has not been replaced by Las Plagas.

-No Wesker

-No reference to RE4 other than Hunnigan (a high point in the film)

-Not trapped in the airport for the whole film which kinda killed any tension.

-Did Claire know where Chris was?

-What happened to Jill?

Just finished and agree on these points. I was far more entertained by this than Advent Children, and it came across with much more care and respect to the franchise than the Anderson films.

Still wish it did more to bridge the lore to the games. There was no real revelations outside of the final sequence(which in itself wasn't all THAT neat a RE5 lead-in). Too much focus on the action and ancillary characters that had little to do with the past games.

I thought I had read that this was supposed to be a tell-all revealing of secrets and history regarding the franchise mythology(could have sworn Garnett labeled it as such on a past 1up Yours), but it was almost everything but. A one-off story that parallels the plot of RE2 without the game attached and new characters fans could care less about.

I did think it was pretty though. The characters had a very 'game' CG look to them and the animations were mostly robotic, but the detail was quite nice, especially on BD disc.

Oh and the pop-up video track didn't reveal anything that cool. Mostly obvious stuff(Hey this scene is an homage to that scene in RE2! Here is the concept art for the airport to compare!)

6/10

Apart from Tri-Cell and the face that Capcom hasn't abandoned the traditional "Zombies" the movie added nothing new or original to the series.

Also lacked enough action to be an action movie and lacked enough tension/scares to be a horror movie

Am I allowed to pimp my blog over here? I don't want to get into trouble.

Anyways, my three weeks old impressions here: http://www.n-philes.com/wi-philes/blog/51/315/

why not? the thread starter is whoring his blog.

I'm glad every videogame venue is giving their opinions on the film like you guys are film critics or something :lol

I watched it I thought honestly it was an extended videogame cutscene...if your fans of the RE games and RE2 in general it's a nice addition to the RE verse.

They made the plot to be shallow to allow people with lesser RE knowledge to still be able to know the story. Furthermore, there's nothing left to expand upon Claire/Chris (since they have reunited in Code: Veronica and the purpose here is served. Claire can go do her stuffs feeling safe knowing why Chris went missing that year), and Chris/Jill/Wesker's current situation is a major selling point for RE5. Why will you want to destroy that in RE: Degeneration? That really make no sense.

The Leon/Claire reunion is an incredible let down. It's pretty much destined that these two are nothing more than acquaintances :lol. Damn you'd think they'd have more to actually say to each other after the RE2 history, Leon as much as saving her ass twice (actually reported her CV issues to Chris), and what with Leons recent RE4 problems.

But then you realize that it's RE, and no serious character development has ever really been considered anyway.

*sigh*

But I still love you RE. :(

I kind of agree with this. The relationships between Claire and Chris, or Jill and Chris were so much better done in the series. However, I guess we can say that Ada and Leon have an interesting dynamic going on. Too bad she didn't show up in Degeneration. Damnit Leon, don't forget about Ada. :lol

I thought the Street Fighter II Animated movie was good. It was entertaining, though not completely faithful to the game nor did it showcase enough of the characters. However, the action was good, presented an alternate story (which was adopted in the Alpha games) and was respectful of the original material.

I also thought the second and third Fatal Fury OVAs were decent too.

And most adoptions, comic to film or video game to film do end up failing, unless the director, actors, etc get "it" like Iron Man or Dark Knight.

It's the oddest thing ever imo. I'd love to talk to the writers and just get some reasoning for why the two have such little interaction or acknowledgment of each other. You'd think the possibility of a romance would have been there, and if not that then surely comrades? But they aren't even partners, they just seem to be two people who were part of a car accident and moved on.

Ada/Leon is probably the most amount of emotion I've seen in the RE series. So I was pretty annoyed with the spy flick interaction between the two in RE4 as well as the very brief sentences shared between them. RE5 does seem to hold the most development though. The interaction between Sheva and Chris seems to pretty good, and the Wekser/Chris rivalry should be a nice present for RE fans.

You should watch .45. Getting fucked from behind by a guy named Big Al. Only superpower she has there is making her nipples erect to extreme sizes.
I love that film.

Hell yes.

That guy from Saw 3 and Californication (The one who plays Big Al) is really starting to grow on me.

Anyways, I'm about to watch this, if only because they decided to bring back my favorite character from the series (Claire). Damn shame she won't be getting another game any time soon.

so this like the Advent Children of the Resident Evil world?

Advent Children really wasn't that bad.

I don't understand the hate. The animation was top-notch; the music was, as always with the Final Fantasy brand, excellent; the dub was above-average as well. Now, in regards to the meat of the film--the plot--I'll admit that it wasn't an incredible story, but it was an interesting hour and a half of watching beloved characters "kill the bad guys."

I think I just summarized every single Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay film with the statements above (if your replace "animation was top-notch" with "amazing action scenes").

This was my first Blu Ray purchase, that and the HDMI cables...and frick does it look hawt. It's too bad the faces don't really have a deep range of expression...but mostly I felt the animation was fairly smooth. Textures on HD blew my mind by the way.

Anyhoo, I don't regret picking up RED, from an artistic point of view (outside of writing) it's fantastic, lots of eye candy. I found myself pausing the movie just to soak up the talent in some of the frames...it just looks that good.

That said...well the plot, dialog...the whole story sucked. None of the characters really grew or evolved from where they started at the beginning. Leon is Leon, and the virus is a virus, whether it be T or G...it doesn't matter, the end result is the same.

This is definitely a movie for the fans, if you're not, rent it or pass it up entirely...you're not missing much in terms of a solid movie experience.

I thought the most ridiculous part was at the end when
Leon was hanging from the ripped metal bridge with his legs and was also holding, with just one hand, the girl and the huge monster that was her brother. He must be Wesker strong or something.

The first half hour was decent. Then they moved away from the zombies onto more compelling plots like that new woman who I've purposefully not learned the name, her stupid brother and an incredibly lame monster.

More zombies please.

I'm a super duper RE fan, so I guess I will be buying this. Not sure why AC gets all the hate though.
Final Fantasy sometimes suffers from smelling its own farts syndrome and taking itself way too seriously. Resident Evil has never had that problem.

I watched it again and enjoyed, the blu-ray has some nice features and some of the voice outtakes are ROFLMAO. I felt I got my money's worth on it.

My friends and I are playing too watch it along side video gaming (RE5 demo of course) for our NYE party.

so uh ..

leon took a blow that sent him over a hundred feet, but managed to get up un-affected and managed to pull off that superb acrobatic move ..

..

RE has a better chance of being a good film if Capcom works on it. The intro to Code Veronica was more entertaining than all of the live action movies. Hell, DMC3 had better action in the cutscenes than most movies period.

That was nothing compared to what happened in RE4. :D

Actually, that might explain why Leon's so stoic in this movie. Compared to his experiences in RE4, Degeneration was a walk in the park.

claire's brief moment with a gun in her hand
was the best bit of the movie for me .. and was it just me or did they actually throw in a little code veronica esque sound track for that scene .. ?

its weird that all three of them had spare side arms, but no one bothered to offer one to claire from the start, even though they all knew she's one of the raccoon survivors (i-e much more highly capable compared to anyone else).

I lol'd at this, it's the first thing I thought when he pulled a spare, errr I'm sure giving that one up earlier might have been a useful for the others.

I enjoyed the movie personally, I didn't go ape for it, but it's a decent movie all the same.

Leon comes off a lot darker in this movie than what I'd expected compared with his RE4 character.

Oh and Angela's boobies are massive, didn't notice till the very end when she was out of her SRT uniform. Those things are massive.

when I saw him so all that I was like hot damn! :lol

but I agree with you he does seem a bit darker and to the point, overall I enjoyed the movie especially when leon/claire gun toss action was going on. I was semi disappointed that
no wesker was around
or that Chris was only mentioned once and no mention of Jill.

Also, yeah her tits were HUGE! her uniformed covered it up.

I got a good laugh out of that. :lol :lol

The movie was a cheesy as I expected it to be.

I'm also a huge RE fan (hoping for an RE2 vibe in this one) but the impression are starting to worry me. Is there absolutely no tension or horror? If not then I'll feel pretty letdown.

There is absolutely no tension or horror and yes, the lip synching is really bad. I still enjoyed it though, but i'm use to watching really really bad horror movies so something decent with zombies and my love of RE still made it okay.

The RE2 vibe isn't there at all. I wouldn't compare this to any of the games in terms of atmosphere. Also no...there isn't any tension whatsoever in the film. Strangely enough I didn't actually expect any. I don't think I've ever heard of horror in the form of CGI.

Seeing as I supported 2/3 of the live-action movies, I could not stand and let this decent effort go to waste, so I bought it.

Overall, this movie is okay. It's the best movie-based RE, for sure.

I just finished watching the movie. Not bad, but not that good either. For a horror movie, I wasn't scared once. I think Leon may have been killed and replaced by an emotionless cyborg. He couldn't even nudge a smile one.

Why did this get an "R" rating? There wasn't even any swearing and the gore factor was fairly low considering. It's an easy PG-13.

I think I enjoyed the Paul Anderson movies more. At least they have a fun "B" movie quality to them. I think the 360 could've produced better CGI on the fly than what was shown in this film. Barely T.V. quality.

A lot of things are better than Advent Children. The only nice thing about AC is the animation.

The amount of cheese in this movie is unbelievable. I liked it. :P

Leon is now Capcom's official pimp, especially since Angela is a 99% no-show in whatever Resident Evil Leon is in next.

Oh well, the movie should have had Ada anyways.

And yeah, I was wondering about the side-arm thing too, as well as the weight issue and the superpunch. :lol

Oh, and why did Claire
vent the atmosphere of the dome?
Was it supposed to clear out the chemicals to prevent more fires?

It's a perfect rental for fans of the Resident Evil series. I wasn't blown away nor annoyed by it, but sorta entertained.

This wasn't a very good movie, but getting to see cyborg Leon was pretty funny.

Also interesting that Motosada Mori (Metal Gear Solid military adviser) was also the adviser for this project. Watching the movie might make you wonder where that knowledge was actually used...

Also, the cameraman for the making of documentary is named "Hideo Kojima." Hmm...

Holy hell, the lip syncing is so terrible I thought there was something wrong with my TV for a second...

Yea at times :lol. I still thought it was awesome though. I could imagine it being boring if the viewer wasn't familiar with RE2.

If you see the trailer with the RE music I was really looking forward to the film but that aspect is ignored in the movie.
