Witcher 3 - sell it to a series newbie.

Low on funds so I decided to get witcher one and two for 5 dollars during the steam sale. Will beat them both first and play the Witcher 3 for the winter sale or something. I really love open world games and from everything Ive heard Witcher 3 does it best. Looking forward to jumping into the franchise.

Wish I could erase their memories and play them again.

You are lucky.

Game of the decade and I got it Day 1 without knowing anything at all about the Witcher series. Actually I can't say I even watched a trailer. After a few hours you'll probably feel comfortable with the story. Far better than Skyrim, better than all three Mass Effect games combined. The game it reminded me the most of was Red Dead Redemption and it felt more like KotOR than any BioWare games in the last few years.

The story, the characters, the environment. All are beautifully connected to form something greater than the sum of its parts. Love The Witcher 3. Haven't played a game with such consistent quality since The Last of Us (for me personally anyway).

Don't worry about the rpg part. Gameplay wise, you'll find nothing deep or complex here. Just enjoy the story and wander the world in search of more stories.

Its on sale now and holding off on the game since the beginning. Dont know why but i am scared i get overwhelmed with the amount content really. Something i could easy manage when i was younger but now i am older and have less time i am scared i will stop playing it very fast because of it. Happened to me a couple of times these last years with some games. But next to that. Everyone says you need to play it and its GOTY 2015. Its difficult.

To anyone concerned about taking an extended break from the game and being lost weeks later: The Witcher 3 is very good at getting you back up to speed. The quest log and character entries are updated constantly with new information.

The RPG elements aren't much of a consideration. I mean, yeah, the game is presented as an rpg, but I'd go as far as saying The Witcher 3 is an adventure game (you know those old lucasarts adventures) with combat thrown in. You should approach the game for its story -both main and sidequests- more than anything else, because by a certain point you will become over-levelled and only die through complacency.

Witcher 3 is the only game in the series that can be considered open world. The Witcher 1 has some open environments as well, but 2 was rather straightforward with very little exploration.

I had never played a witcher game before this one. I bought it last month. I think it is my new favorite game ever. I think it's the GOAT.

I might try Witcher 3. I can say Witcher 1 and 2 held my attention for less than 3 hours together.

I tried many times to get into Witcher 2 but for some reason I just couldn't stand it. However, I did try again with Witcher 3, and luckily enough for me it feels like a.completely different experience. it took me just a couple of hours to get hooked, and I loved it from there and to the end.

I can't because there's a fuck ton of content that will not impact you in any way unless you actually played the other two games or have read the books.

I really hate that this was the first post.

It's not really true at all.

Knowledge of the lore will enhance the experience a lot but isn't a prerequisite.

Never played 1 or 2, but my initial impression of Witcher 3 after my first few hours was that the combat was shitty and the main story was boring ("hey go here and see if this person is there", "WHOOPS JUST MISSED THEM", repeat in the next city). Over time, I fell in love with the side quests and contract missions since they are awesome; there are so many of them and they are very well written, so it's well worth putting up with the disappointing combat/main story (disclaimer: I haven't beaten the main story or touched the expansions yet, so maybe the main story improves at some point).

Someone in the OT suggested using the alternate movement option, which made combat slightly better; I also switched to easy so I could focus more on the story/side quests instead of how much I disliked the combat.

Op is probably past the point of caring now but .... I want to try for my own sake -

Witcher 3 is a great game that should be played if you like some or all of the following things - RPGs, Action, Graphics, Characters, Story, World design, high fantasy (more conan then DnD), crafting , adventuring, open world.

This game really tries to have it all ! an early trailer for it is what sold me on it , made me think it was like a medieval Grand Theft Auto and at times because of the high production value and polish for many of the main story quests it really does feel as well made as something like GTAV. This game is an RPG though , so you spend as much time reading and exploring as you do fighting. The combat system is often called the weakest link in Witcher 3 and although I'm trying to sell the whole thing for you OP , I can't really fully defend this one area. I think it's serviceable but I kept the difficulty on "normal" which means I wasn't really challenged by an encounter after the halfway mark. It's a combat system that feels like Dark Souls mixed with the ability wheels present in something like mass effect (although you don't have guns in witcher). When it all works properly it can feel like a visceral gory slaughter house , when the combat system falters, it can be frustrating. BUT to keep selling the game , I'll say that no matter how annoyed I would occasionally get (it wasn't that often at all) at the dodgy combat that the story/world/characters would pull me back in at a moments notice. This is the first time I've played an open world-ish RPG that I've not only finished but very much loved to sit and play. Bethesdas games by comparison have piss poor art direction, no real story and a sea of boring uninteresting characters. I have no investment in their worlds and so I never feel attached to anything , no reason to keep playing them. Witcher I wanted to keep going to see what town might be over the next hill or passed the next stream because I knew each town would have a story to look into , a quest filled with some level of heart break for some random towns person, a monster to kill.

I guess to sum it all up , Witcher 3 was one of the most immersive experiences I've ever had while playing a videogame. If you value being part of a huge living world within a game but want more direction (and better combat frankly) than a Bethesda game (eldar scrolls/fallout) then go ahead and give Witcher 3 a whirl.

Also , here is a link to the trailer that got me to buy the game last year at launch -

And for the record my experience with the series/books prior to this entry was pretty small. I knew they existed and I do own 1/2 but after 3 tries with 1 I haven't made it out of the first real area (it's a PC RPG with janky mouse based combat and it's built on biowares neverwinter nights engine). All I did with witcher 2 was load it up on a couple of occasions to see how pretty it looked but I intended to finish 1 before 2. Even with 3 I had plans to play it later , after completing 1 and 2 but I got hooked by 3 so quickly that I just kept playing.

I wouldn't sell you on Witcher 3, I'd say you should buy and play the much cheaper and much better Witcher 2. Open worlds can be cool, but in this case it just detracted from all the stuff that made the Witcher series so amazing. What happened to the story/plot that was actually interesting and made you excited to see what happens next, a plot that actually had intrigue and politics? What happened to the meaningful 'only shades of grey' choices with dramatic repercussions that you might not expect or might not become apparent until later in the game? What happened to the much more finely crafted side-quest stories?

I cannot think of a circumstance where I would ever replay the Witcher 3, but I replayed the Witcher 2 immediately after finishing it (I did the same thing with Witcher 1 too). Act 2 of the Witcher 2 is actually two completely different acts based on a choice you make earlier in the game. The Witcher 2 delivered on the "meaningful choices" design goal so hard that they literally had the game/story branch off entirely based on your choices; I can't think of another game in recent history with that kind of commitment.

Don't get me wrong however, Witcher 3 is not a bad game, it's just not a great Witcher game. The series kind of followed the same trajectory as Mass Effect. The first one was really plugged into RPG mechanics in ways that weren't always fun to play but were unique and different, the second made dramatic mechanical improvements that weren't as RPG-y but took all the stuff that made the original so great and took it to a new level, while the third ends up kind of losing the plot.

Got Witcher 3 day 1 having never played 1 or 2. Together with the expansions it has become the best game I've ever played. I'm now reading the books and they're good too. Can't recommend the game highly enough

I have to say you're not in a lot of company with that opinion. Whereas that opinion is a fairly common one for mass effect.
