witcher 3 suddenly charging for dlc

I guess it will be another rip-off like that sham crap for Baldur's Gate 2, what was that? Throne of Baal? Yeah, should have been free.

Expansions....not some little weapon DLC...full expansions with story and new areas to explore. Seem well worth the money to me.

What if it's 5 hrs of of content and 25 hours of filler like DA:I was?

Then you don't buy it.

But why would you possibly think that this expansion pack, made by an entirely different company than DA:I, a company with a fairly lengthy and promising track record of not making filler, would have anything in common with it?

How old are You?
Do any of those subtitles rings any bells to You?

Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal
Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir
Old enough to not buy into bullshit that publishers might promise that's so far from release.

What's funny is the first line of that quote has proven to be scarily accurate:

"First and foremost, I think the word DLC has been extremely devalued."

That and people picked out the words they wanted to hear and ignored the rest.

The question I'm asking is, do you really expect a developer from poland to add a whole new region + 30 hours of gameplay to their most expensive game to date and give it to you for free? Gamers and their entitlement these days really sickens me.

CD Projekt Red should be rewarded for putting out 30+ hours of gameplay, assuming the expansion content is high quality which I will assume it is as Witcher 2 was amazing.

Common sense isn't so common. Did people think if they made a big expansion with a lot of original assets they would release it for free to please the fans? this is a business.

DLC and Expansions are different.
Free DLC, Paid Expansions. They really need to release a statement to clarify this. A lot of people are angry even on their facebook post of this yesterday.

Well, that's good, since in the press release the developer expressly states that you should wait, see and decide with your own money and opinion.

So, good for you!

I'm happy that someone is going back to expansions instead of DLC. Ten dollars for 1 hour of gameplay is not worth it to me. Bring on some real content.

So, it'd be better for them to make a new standalone game for that 20 hour experience and charge $60?

Yeah, makes total sense.

No. But the distinction been made is totally ridiculous. "Expansions" are DLC. Expansions more or less are a marketing term to describe "meaty" DLC: "expanding" the game. But any type of DLC= more content by default. So the point is moot.

What's interesting about all of this is people arguing about semantics on the term DLC and taking sides.

There is only one side. Expansions are DLC period. Whether you're ok with CDPR calling DLC, "Expansions" got nothing to do with the term itself.

Lets take TLOU: Left Behind. It's DLC. Story DLC. Give it to a publisher like Activision and watch it be called an "Expansion".

Edit: I've been corrected, I was wrong about what their original statement about DLC was.

They have every right to charge for this, but I feel like people are buying into their spin a bit too hard. They did say something that implied DLC would be free right? And this is DLC by definition of how the term is used in 2015. Ultimately it doesn't matter but there is a bit of a contradiction in their marketing.

Yes, let's crucify CDProjekt, one of the most consumer friendly developers in the gaming industry, for having the audacity to charge money for a 30 hour expansion.

I bet the 30hr content was in the original 200 hr game. They are cutting it and then charging us to see the ending.

pretty unclear right?

Ubisoft, rockstar, EA, etc would've been mauled to death right now.

You're right. And those companies have repeatedly shit on consumers in any number of ways.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is straight up saying "don't buy it if you're weary of whether or not it's worth it."

Did I miss when Witcher 3 came out? Why is there already DLC/Expansion talk?

Game has been done since December. Just polishing and bug fixes have been implemented since, meaning yeah, they've had 4 or so months minimum to figure out if/what they wanted to do for DLC/expacs.

Thread whining, I know...

But we really don't need two of these threads, Especially when OP didn't even see the main one on first page

Because you have to give reason for people to keep hold of your game. The incentive of more content later down the line will keep many from trading it in.

What's the big deal with announcing more content?

funny thing is...dragon age origins had an expansion called awakening, and everyone was ok with that at the time...that was 10-15 hrs long. cdpr is promising more. so people seem to forget, they are so butthurt with ubi and EA practices that they are blinded by when a developer tries to do something right, or better, which is the case here.

CD Projekt RED imo unintentionally made a lot of enemies by announcing paid expansions prior to the game's release. They should have sticked with the positive "we're giving DLC's for free" theme right until the premiere and then wait a few months before announcing big expansions.

There's a difference between releasing a successful game and then later releasing an expansion and straight up charging for a season pass before a game is even out. Sure, dude came out and said to wait for reviews and such but that's still a dirty ass practice. This shit aint kickstarter.

pretty unclear right?

Nope that is crystal clear if that was the original statement. I thought that they had only made statements like this after announcing the expansion. That's what I get for getting news through the GAF spin machine <_<. Thank you for the correction

So, again, people want to be kept in the dark about game development and the future of a title they're going to spend 60 bucks on.

Weird. So weird.
