Woman convicted of assault for slapping groper

Wonder what punishment he'd face if she playfully grabbed his ass, and he turned around and broke her nose.

In Sweden of all places, the fair nation of equality and justice:

Justice? We have justice down in the good ol U.S of A as well. We just serve our own type of justice outside of the law.

But seriously this situation doesn't seem all that equal from what I got from the story.

Noses don't break from slapping, we are talking viking women here.

Really digging how much Vikings is catching on in gaf haha.

While I of course don't know what really happened, I think it's kinda weird that a court in a free country deciedes one thing and the media outlet reports the opposite.

Edit: OK, they say "serious provocation", but how come the case is dropped, yet the sexual assault is reported as a fact?

Without seeing the actual text of the entire decision, I wouldn't read too much into that portion. They may be assuming he did it arguendo or simply stating that something was provocation without attributing the touch to any particular party.

Slapping someone so hard you break their nose is pretty serious. I don't know the exact details, but it seems like some kind of verbal warning would be appropriate beforehand.

Everyone would see this as just if the genders were reversed, so I don't see how it's unfair.

I've grabbed a lot of ass and had other guys take the blame. It's not really hard on a crowded dance floor!

Women are in a weaker position in society.

It's kinda like affirmative action, for butt grabs.

What does position in society have to do with assault?

It's either acceptable for all or acceptable for none! ............ can't discriminate based on gender, that's sexist.

I recall a thread here once where the general consensus was it was not okay to react with violence when groped.

I remember that thread as well, it was also homophobic to react negatively to being groped by a guy in that thread as well.

I've had women grab my butt before, and I didn't ask for it. Should I have broken their nose?

Obviously not the same thing, but I think breaking the guy's nose is a bit much for what is unfortunately a pretty common thing in clubs.

"She instinctively turned to confront the man who grabbed her and hit him in the face so hard she broke the 27-year-old's nose."

What I heard was that she was groped and didn't do anything. Later she spotted him and went up to talk to him, he touched her shoulder and then she broke his nose.

That depends really. If the groping is a persistent thing and someone fears for the their safety then proportional violence would be acceptable. The court found that she did not have that fear and it was probably just a reaction. Might not have been the right guy or it could have been an accidental thing.

The investigation into the 23-year-old's sexual assault complaint was dropped, however, due to a lack of evidence.
Of course the grope should have left a visible bruise on her buttocks.

If you're having trouble sympathizing with the guy, turn the situation around. If some girl grabbed my junk at a club and I hit her in the face, breaking her nose, there'd be no defense force. He did something wrong, but you don't launch a nuke after you've been hit by a slingshot.

Why did this turn into a gender bias thread? I think anyone has the right to violently defend themselves if they are sexually violated.

I think you've been here long enough to know that things go south like this. I guess it would have helped if OP didn't mention equality in his post.

This seems pretty straight-forward. There's no evidence he sexually assaulted her but there is clear evidence she assaulted him.

There should be consequences for sexual assault but they should be legal, not physical violence. (If a person is in clear and present danger then force is warranted, obviously)

well I agree with the court decision.

you cant hit a person and break his nose and think you will get away with it.

But that guy is an asshole

Depends.
Can self defense be used against a sexual assault?
Is groping considered sexual assault?

I'd go with:
If someone gropes you and walks away and you hit them that's revenge, not defense.
If someone is groping you right now and you hit them to make them stop that's defense.

For context this is what actually went down:

He grabbed her ass, a friend of the girl pushed him away.

He left.

She ran after him, yelled some more.

He put is arm on her shoulder.

She broke his nose.

Swedish self defense laws are pretty strict, and there is no way to argue self defense here, honestly. If she had hit him at once i'm sure she would have been aquitted.

In most countries I think the above scenario would result in assault charges. I'm surprised that he wasn't charged considering there was a witness.

Ok. She is a BAD ASS. Given your description of law there, I understand the criminal penalty, but I still can't understand why he would get damages especially after touching her shoulder.

He got roughly $280 in damages. I initially assumed for medical bills but I'm not sure there would be any in Sweden.
