Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap - Gameplay video from GameSpot

A perfect remake for a perfect game.

Shame about PC release a bit later...
I usually buy all multiplats on PC but this one is perfect for Switch. Can't wait to cry myself to sleep after some late night devilishly hard retro platforming in bed ;)

Hold on... what the hell is going on here? (From Giant Bomb's Quick Look Ex)

The outside is reversed! Yes, that actually makes sense as you've gone through the door and you're now on the other side of this wall... but if applied to the rest of the game then the level layout and the way areas connect don't make any sense anymore. X)

Wow, I didn't notice that.

I can't think of any area that this would outright break, but it is weird. Go left to go to the beach (isn't that where the jungle is?) and then take the upper exit and enter the town on the right side somehow? Really weird.

...and I think this reskin is not faithful to the original at all. Just talking visuals. Considering how plain the original looks today, it would've been way too restrictive to give this a more faithful appearance anyway.
Well yes okay. It's an incredibly faithful gameplay recreation. IMO too faithful, it will be to its detriment as all the slippy controls, clunkiness and plain/poor level/enemy layouts will be retained instead of streamlined like the best remakes (see Metroid Zero Mission, REmake)

The graphics have a completely new look and personality and are honestly incredible to me. The original is pretty homely IMO (Mark III/MS carts were always very small ROM sizes because Sega were cheapasses).

I think if they streamlined the game MZM style, with these graphics it would have a chance to be one of the greatest 2D games ever made. But as-is it will be held back by the too-faithful gameplay. I'll play it just to see it though ;)

I am super excited for this game and really hope it gets a physical version. Would be one of the few full digital games I would buy on console if it doesn't though.

Edit: Also I know it's from a separate group, but has there been any word on that other original Monster Boy game? Cursed Kingdom I think?

IMO the best 8-bit game ever, with some of the best controls, structure and graphical charm of the generation. When the developers said that the new version would be faithful to the original, literally they sold it to me.

Did anyone ever play the 'first remake' of this game on PC Engine? "Adventure Island: Dragons Curse"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6lQCgl01r4
It retained most of the originals charm.

I think it's even better. At least better graphics and sound. The main character has a different sprite depending on which direction you face, to show the shield behind or in front of the arm.

This is a game that basically defined my tastes as a child with Master System II and I'm really happy to see the new remake is basically perfect.

Can't wait! The Wonderboy series has always been a favorite of mine. (I was one of those weird Sega kids in the 80s and 90s),

Would love to get a remake on Wonderboy 2 in MonsterLand - at the time, that game was my favorite out of the 3 on the SMS.

Had no idea this literally is monster boy 3 only reskinned. Far less interested now. Sorry retro gamers, but many of these games feel a bit, well, "janky" these days. Sure is beautiful though.

WB3:TDD (not to be confused with WB3: Monster's Lair on the MegaDrive) has really solid controls compared to many of its contemporaries and holds up well to this day. Jumping and stabbing Meka-Dragon in the face still feels amazing. :)

I think length is where newcomers should keep expectations in check, it's not awfully difficult. edit: Turns out, they added a Hard Mode! Awesome.

Eh, I think it has pretty average slippy controls. Tier 2 for the era. It ain't Contra or Super Mario Bros, but it's better than ultra loose controls of say Psyco Fox (and its predecessor Kid Kool).

What is actually good about this remake is they have added in additional animations that make sense of the slipperiness. That will actually make it easier and better to play IMO, rather than having slipperiness and no animation as a 'tell'.

I see what you see mean about "sliding" without an animation, but the actual movement is great imo. As for the animation, I'm glad they dodged the pet peeve of mine with indie games, which is overly animated characters on the extreme end where they can't even stand still in an idle pose without looking like they're out of breath.

I'll agree with you on Psycho Fox though, as much as I liked that game. :)

Looking some more at the GiantBomb video, I see one (rather minor!) change in the visuals I don't really care for:

Exiting the Captain Dragon's boss the door is not in the ship's side. In the original it's neat because that "thing" you see early in the game turns out to be the ship that you entered underwater and you come directly out of it. I would have preferred the ship to be in the foreground like in the original, or, perhaps firing Lion-Man from a cannon onto the shore?

New visuals are fantastic!! But the new music is terrible. It has a heavy french style that I don't like at all (just a personal opinion here). I will buy the game for Switch and play with the original 8-bit music.

Agreed, and will be doing the same also.

Hopefully 'Spring' doesn't mean right at the end of the season. I'll probably purchase the Switch as soon as it's out.

Yeah, this new soundtrack lacks energy. Same basic composition, but the mood's all wrong. It's good that you can use the original 8-bit themes because this game has some of the best music of all time.

And for those who've never played this... It's basically in the Metroid/Castlevania/Zelda category. The flat level layouts aren't as much of a problem as you think because the game is designed around exploration elements, and platforming is not really the main attraction. Your main focus is timing your weapon attacks and learning enemy patterns. There's also quite a bit of grinding if I'm remembering correctly. It's not an intricate platformer at all even though it looks like one on the surface. This is an action RPG/adventure game.
