Might as well go further, decreasing the salinity of the ocean would cause the gulf stream to stop, outside of obvious temperature results it would cause on europe and north america, it can stop the ocean conveyor belt globally, ocean stagnation results, anoxia (lack of oxygen) kills majority of aquatic lifeforms, and related to the permian extinction from wiki
