Words that automatically turn you off from games

_____ meets _____
A mix of _____ and ______
A homage to ______

Just like "retro", it's basically saying "we can't do something better/original so we'll try to cash in on stuff you liked before".

Indie in a nutshell, really.

Quick Time Events. Its a automatic no-buy for me. It basically means the dev was lazy and couldn't think of a better way to implement shit. I know some decent games have them but I stand by my decision.

Edit: and Turn based RPGs, never saw the allure.

"New ....."

Sums up a series pretty well when they have to start it with New so you don't confuse it with all the previous titles.

These. Along with "COD-like."

An example. "We wanted to grab the COD audience, so we made our game more COD-like in its gunplay."

That's how to automatically turn me away from an FPS. If I want to play COD, I'll play COD. I don't need other games going for their audience, or trying to make the game more like it.

Oh man yes. And back in the day... "Halo Killer".

Mobile/handheld, Microtransactions, and Multiplayer only/focused are probably the big ones. Though I think I might need to start adding dark, gritty, and mature to the list as well.

Depends on the genre, I suppose.

I don't pay too much attention to 2D games that, well, allow me to quote myself:

Every time I see the descriptors “retro” or “old-school” (usually followed by “indie”, “metroidvania”, “RPG”, “procedurally generated”, “rogue-like”, or all of these) on a 2D action (or belt-scroll, etc.) game my learned reflex to roll my eyes kicks in.

What's in the parentheses, particularly.

I started making a detailed list and then I realized that I hate modern gaming. Everything from more shooters to micro-transactions belongs on my list. I guess that's why I tend to play retro games more than modern games, by a large margin.

--Exclusive: Exclusive content, preorder exclusive, store exclusive, console exclusive (Only availible on consoles) games should be on everything that can play them (if they are third party.) if a game is only XBONE or only PS4 or only PC that's fine but if a game isn't on PS4 or XBONE or PC because of money hatting, that's pretty lame.

--Mappack: split up the community, usually overpriced.

--Esports: games that tend to be declared this are usually not my cup of tea.

--MOBA: I always feel bad about myself after a game of DOTA.

--F2P: Usually, there are exceptions. F2P usually means a dearth of stuff I do like. RIP Mechwarrior franchise

Here are some words I do like!

++Expansion: New units! New faction! New maps! New story!

++Modtools: Make your own units, factions, maps, and stories!

++Codex: Gimmie dat plot dump. What do the people of these land eat? What's the social structure of this alien government? TELL ME.

++Mech: In every game I play I have the urge to get into a giant machine and punch other giant machine or monster in the face.

++Sandbox: Gives me feelings of Crusader Kings 2, Freelancer, and Mount and Blade. I like when NPCs do their own thing and you're just a cog in the design.

++Tactical: whether it be the simulation in Arma 3 or verisimilitude in a wargame like AirLand Battle, I like to put my thinking cap on, not memorize counter units.

Cinematic, visceral, immersive.

I want to play games not movies, so that first one does nothing for me. As for the other two, fuck those buzzwords. I don't even know what those words mean anymore because they're used so much to describe every video game.

If Tetris was made today it would be visceral and immersive

This thread has covered most of the bases (I don't like F2P, can't get into MOBAs, can't get into RTS...)

But one other one: Metroidvania.

Now, don't get me wrong... I fucking love Metroid, and Castlevania is cool too. But don't use that term in your official description of your game. It looks tacky.

Micro transactions
Monetization
Experience Doublers
Accessible
Streamlined

Also, unless I'm playing a strategy game or an rpg, any game whose marketing material mentions the word 'economy' is pretty much imediately ignored.

What equally concise and readily understood term would you offer instead?

I'm thinking "exploraction"

which is terrible, i know

"gunplay"

When that is used to describe a game it's usually one which focuses far too much on features I really don't care about in the least.

Randomly/procedurally generated levels. I like my levels finely crafted.

Cinematic. I like to play my games not watch them.
