Words that automatically turn you off from games

"100+ hours of gameplay!"

Oh how i loathe this shit, on almost every occasion this means all the crappy, boring added padding is counted to make the number seem impressive.

Anime

Do not care for this style 99% of the time. It looks goofy, the characters these days look like popstars bordering on looking like strippers (females). I cannot take any of these worlds seriously.

Microtransactions
No need to explain this shit.

Motion controlled
Motion controls suck. They never worked. Never. Regardless of the platform, regardless of the publisher, regardless of the developer, no game with heavy use of motion controls ever functioned 100% of the time. Anyone who says otherwise is lying. I consider my copies of Donkey Kong Country Returns, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Galaxy 1 and 2 as great games that suffered somewhat because of the shitty motion controls added to them. They are like diamonds that were harmed by greedy miners, like escaped prisoners, who despite all odds made it, somewhat unscathed. If there was a gravestone with "Motion Controls" somewhere, i would go take a piss on it right now, i am that thrilled its mostly gone. /rant

Yes, Indie. I was one of those who really liked the trend some years ago, but now all the games are basically some kind of 8-bit pixel/cartoonish graphics, side-scrolling gameplay and annoying puzzles all the way to the end.

And soon enough, the industry will be able to describe a new game with all those words in a single sentence. This is sad.

'Mature' when used to refer to adolescent-bait games with showers of blood, tits and awkward sex everywhere. I'm cool with it being used for decent stories that aren't appropriate for kids for various reasons though.

'Cinematic' when used to refer to games that make me watch thirty-minute-long cut scenes as if it's a good thing in an interactive medium. This doesn't apply to games that build storytelling into actual gameplay.

'Social' when used to refer to annoying the shit out of your friends with stealth viral marketing. I quite like Streetpass though, or other online functions where you only bother other players who are already playing it. The pawns in Dragon's Dogma were fun.

'Downloadable content/IAP' when referring to things that should have been included with the main game. I'm cool with RPG expansions etc though. Skyrim is a good example- I thought 'hearthfire' was a complete waste of money and something that should have been on the disc, but 'dragonborn' was an excellent expansion to the campaign for someone who wanted more.

'FTP' when referring to games that are free to download but it's quickly apparent that, if you don't intend to pay anything, they are mindnumbingly tedious busywork and have cooldowns measured in hours rather than enabling fun play. They need a new description, 'FTD' is more generous, or how about 'CFW', for Crack For Whales.

I guess in that sense it's more when it's in the phrase "Action-RPG" (as opposed to traditional turn-based RPG)

I started making a detailed list and then I realized that I hate modern gaming. Everything from more shooters to micro-transactions belongs on my list. I guess that's why I tend to play retro games more than modern games, by a large margin.

I also like this reply very much.

day one DLC

If it's available dat one then it should be in the game. This guarantees I'm buying the game four years later at a 75 percent discount just to mess up your balance sheet. Devs somewhere mad as shit 20,000 new players access their servers for the first time.

"Cinematic". Just no. Take your endless cutscenes and story out of my game, thank you.

Also, turn based. Turn based battles are boring.

The usual shameful shit here -- "mature" translates to "there will be blood, cuss words, awful characters and lots of brown," any variation of "DLC," "microtransactions" or "season pass" translates to "we didn't quite finish this game, but we'll definitely make you pay for it when we do, little by little."

On a related note, I immediately stop reading any review that begins with the phrase "let's face it."

Not so much the choice of words but usage.

If I see a game trying to hard to sell itself then it just turns me off. Games that have

"10/10 Gamespot, IGN GAME OF THE YEAR, DLC CODE INCLUDED, etc." just make me cringe.

'Season pass' translates to me as 'wait for the GOTY edition: we haven't finished it yet.'
'Kinect' translates to me as 'tech demo.'

"Epic"

"Like Skyrim"

And by far my most hated to the point where I assume people who use it are oblivious to video games

"Like Dark Souls, Dark Souls in [x] form, ect" - Welp Dark Souls is the hardest game I played better use it as a synonym for difficult xDDDDD

And the sad thing is people are using these more and more.

Pre-order bonus ...
Day-one DLC ...

Nailed it.
Pre-order at Best Buy for this, Gamestop for that, and Wal-Mart for some other thing.
Worse yet when games have physical things you can only get with each edition : Gears of War 2 had an RC Car at Best Buy or life-sized Lancer at Amazon. If I want both I just get two games?
Fucking
nonsense.
