Words that automatically turn you off from games

Cinematic, definitely. Most of the times it just sounds like a poor excuse for constrained gameplay. Of all the games I played the Metal Gear saga (at least the first three) actually marries both gameplay and cinematic feeling in an effective way, other games not so much, as they feel a drag to play.
Additionally, since the thrid person shooter genre is now almost exclusively tied to the 'cinematic' moniker I could say they are another major turn-off for my interest in a potential buy.

Nice work!

Awwww yes, turn based that's me

Microtransactions

First post nails it again.

I will say that as long as Microtransactions aren't required or "pay to win" type of situation, I can ignore that word. I will just refuse to do them.

For me the word is "multiplayer", because when I see it and cringe it's usually when referring to a game that was previously single-player only, and now has tacked-on multiplayer because they need a bullet point on the back of the box.

I'm thinking Mass Effect and Bioshock here. Wasting development time on unnecessary multiplayer takes resources away that could've been spent fleshing out the only part of their game people want, the single player experience.

Pffff there are tons, here are some in no particular order.
Cinematic
Mature
Indie
AAA/Triple A
DLC
Microtransactions
Reboot
EA/Electronic Arts
Immersive
Experience
Online

Hardcore, full-frontal nudity.

On opposite day.

- Procedurally generated

- Voxel

- Terrain

- Retro

- Inspired by "x"

All that, and when the creator says "We are really excited about how the game is coming out". I dunno but that lack of self-criticism is just... turns me off.

"Zombie", "open world", "online" and "shooter" usually makes me tune out. It's an uphill battle from there on to win my attention back. Luckily there have been games in all of those categories that have successfully done so.

Mobile
Free to play
Electronic Arts
Microtransactions
Bungie
Bethesda
Bioware
WRPG
Molyneaux
Season pass
Digital edition

cinematic

And all the buzzwords that EA uses to describe the so called improvements in AI and animations for FIFA.

shooter

Mobile
F2P
Microtransactions
Flash
FPS (unless correlated with a 60)
TPS
America
Dudebro
Cinematic
Gun
Mature
Cool
Epic

...and a few others I can't think of at the moment.

Multiplayer-focused
Social
Community

I get plenty of human interaction throughout my regular day. When I play a game I want to be left the hell alone. The future of games is not looking good for me.

Always-online.

Multi-player only

Oh, I forgot 'QTE'.

This too.

Multiplayer-only or just Online-only.

Virtual Currency.

Used to love the NBA 2k games until they introduced that garbage.

Don't even get me started.

Motion Controls

F2P, Freemium, Ransomware.

Multiplayer only

So yeah, it's not even a type of genre (outside of MP only) or the story, the graphics. I give almost anything a chance (outside of RTS). It's all this stuff.

Fucking stupid decisions for the gamer, but great for the stockholder. It is what it is. I try my best not to support it.

Always online

Mobile
Indie
Lightning (FF13)
DRM
Motion controls

Could probably think of more

I wish people would put their money where their mouth is, and stop buying games with these phrases included. Perhaps that would bring some change, and force publisher's (like EA's) hand. Unfortunately that ain't gonna happen as long as people feel the need to have the next big thing from them.

To be fair, I'd guess a lot of the most vocal detractors (I.e. us) don't buy into a lot of this stuff, but the mass market loves it, and that's what we get. We are a niche.
