Working 3.5mm jack added to the iPhone 7 plus

That's not really too surprising. But the question is really whether there'd be room for one on the iPhone 8, 9, 10+.

Ok, and what about the regular 7? If it works in the larger phone but not their flagship model this isn't really news

.

it's probably it doesn't fit in the smaller phone so they killed it on both

or it would've fit fine in both if they went with a normal capacitive home button like they should've instead of shoving their taptic engine nonsense in there to justify its existence

That was interesting to watch, especially cool that he basically just did a bike ride to pick up his custom printed flex board. He ultimately broke some meter to fit in the legacy port though, didn't he? He swept that under the rug in the end.

And of course it was a conscious decision by Apple. Nobody except some keyboard warriors will give a shit about the non existent jack this year.

E: What I meant to say was that nobody except for your usual suspects will go up in arms this year since the new iPhones won't have a 3,5mm jack either. Pretty sure they dropped it last year so it doesn't "overshadow" their anniversary line up. Or do you except sites to put out "iPhone 8 won't have a headphone jack" headlines this year?

if that was actually the case this video wouldn't exist

that second dude hanging around in shorts with semi-industrial equipment in his living room, using a fucking xbox controller to control the drill is so proto-cyberpunk.

Pretty courageous of him to try this.

The fucking Note 8 has a headphone jack and a stylus slot and it is even more waterproofy than the iPhone 7.

Apple is full of shit.

S7/S7 Edge also, ya know, the phone that came out a year and half ago.

Apple just wants that accessory $$, not sure why anyone would think otherwise...as if removing a feature ever benefited the consumers.

Shit, Apple's own 6s had decent water resistance.

I know.. I was just giving the most recent example.

Taptic home button rocks. I'll take that over 3.5mm jack any day.

To be fair didn't actually just squeeze it into the phone as is, he had to remove the "barometric vent".

...and shave down the insides and order a custom circuit board and solder a buncha shit

good video

but he still can't charge it and use the headphones at the same time? ...might as well just use the fucking lightning->headphone cable

Do you honestly think most ppl will bitch because this years iPhones won't have a 3,5mm jack? They've either moved on to some Android phone if the stupid port is so important to them or have accustomed to it and won't care.

Yeah... I was like "What's the point then" when I realized he had to unplug the phone to charge. (Just for the record, I'm totally aware that he himself did it for the experience and journey but some attribute actual usability benefits to this mod)

There have been super thin Android phones made with headphone jacks. Anyone convincing themselves day 1 it had to be removed for technical reasons were in the clouds. It's just annoying people gobble up anything if it comes from their favourite company.

Google can now too piss on an electric fence for doing it with the Pixel. Thank goodness the Android market has a million handset manufacturers.

The process of doing this seemed fun.

I wish I had an interesting personal project and biked around a chinese metropolis, picking up custom circuit boards, sitting in a cafe and designing my PCBs, going to my friend's small apartment to use his cnc mill.

why...why is this not my life....

In the end he only used the headphone jack once or twice a month....

j/k

The work involved in putting the jack in was mind boggling. It just got more and more complicated as the video progressed. I'm sure he got a lot more fun out of the whole project than whatever satisfaction having an audio jack brings.

I give a shit, still. And I sigh every time I find myself dropping an android phone from consideration because yet another company decided to follow in Apple's footsteps. Shame that I now have to actually look out for whether a phone has a 3.5mm jack.

So yeah. Thanks, Apple. I stopped using your phones and you're still screwing me over.

Dude is just a coward.

Very well done and impressive modification. If he is able to make it work on the iphone 8 reliably (and not to time consuming) he could start making profit out of this, for a premium price of course and rightfully so.

What is a "keyboard warrior" and why do keyboard enthusiasts care about a headphone jack?

Here's an idea, why don't you speak about what you do or do not care about instead of speaking for everyone?
Also, if you don't care about the 3.5mm jack, why are you in this thread?
I promise you, Apple will remain a successful company that makes successful products that many people enjoy even if you don't defend their honor in this thread.

the guy standing in the apple store with no shirt on. like wtf.... who does that
China is a shirt optional establishment.

Amazing. Apple are so full of it.

I dunno if they are though.
like, yea, there was room for the little 3.5m input, but he really didn't add a headphone jack, he just kind of internalized the lightning->headphone adapter. it didn't seem like connecting the 3.5m straight to the logic board or whatever would have really accomplished anything

Wut?
My brain hurts. Afermarket solution will always to take more space than Integrated solution.

As someone who often listens to podcasts for hours a day (travelling around a city a lot for work'll do that for you) it brings me sweet joy every time the concept of removing a frigging headphone jack is brought down for the pure money-grubbing BS it so clearly is.

I'd rather lose the camera than the jack.

we all know the main reason apple got rid of the headphone jack is so they can sell the dongles and their $130, easily misplaced airpods.

The fast turnaround time between sending in his design and receiving the pcb's is amazing. Makes me want to move there. The shops there is a goldmine for electronics too.
