Working at Target, Executive Team Lead

I am currently in the interview process for an Executive Team Lead Asset Protection position and wondering what the job is like.

I'm reading through Glassdoor and it's not pretty. 2 full weekends a month and scheduled 50 hours (salary) but it's more like 60 hours.

Can anyone confirm?

Is it the same for the ETL AP? Usually Asset Protection has a little more wiggle room and free time than the full sales floor managers, is it like that at Target also?

Thanks.

I interviewed for an entry level management position with Target coming out of College. They sold the weekends as "you also get 1 weekday off every week, so you still get 4 days off every 2 weeks you work".

Can personally confirm. But from my experience you're right on the AP ETL. Which city are you working in

Just from what I saw as a Team Member at Target, ETLs have a lot of responsibilities that sometimes extend past their core duties. God speed, OP.

Yeah it's loss prevention. Team lead is the one who generally watches the cameras or handles plain-clothes patrols around the store and supervises the uniformed AP that stands near one or both of the entrances.

It's exceedingly boring, and you're under pretty strict requirements to catch shoplifters and produce results. I did it for a couple months and absolutely hated it.

Isn't that the person that manages the lines and how many counters are open in addition to sometimes running a cash register, picking up popcorn and getting yelled at for stuff that happens during their shift?

scheduled 50 hours?

Scheduled 40 and works 50 is one thing, but scheduled 50 with salary? It's gonna be more than 50 hours. Fuck that.

Get out of retail.

I worked in retail at various places for roughly 5 years. I've never worked with worse people or been more miserable at my job than I was in retail. Also in my experience, the higher you climb the ladder and more money you make, the more likely you are to be fired for some bullshit. I saw an assistant store manager get fired because he took 30 minutes to drive to the store when an alarm went off at 2am (the alarm also automatically calls the police).

If you work in a target that's located in like say New York City you're gonna have a rough time as AP. But if you're somewhere in suburbia it won't be as bad from what folks tell me

This was in the Houston suburbs, it was soul-crushing. I wouldn't want to do it in a city or somewhere with a high crime/shoplifting rate, though honestly I think it would be easier to hit your goals at a store like that. Either way it's kind of a shit job, and unless you end up at the corporate level it's pretty much a dead end.

People work on weekends, if youve been able to live well with weekends off thats great but I dont think its a good idea to become expectant of it. Depends on salary, honestly a lot of good jobs are pretty much what youre describing. Work weekends and 50-60 hrs a week

Eh being in loss prevention isn't as bad as other areas of retail. Plus if you want to transition into any law enforcement jobs it is a pretty good way to get your foot in the door.

Source: I was retail manager and had multiple LP associates use it as a jumping board into law enforcement.

Dude Target is horrible place to work. And yes you are going to work more than what they tell you. And be prepared to cover any department besides AP. They'll throw you to any department with 0 training. And even though you'll be ETL for AP you will still be responsible for the entire store several times a week. You will be the LOD and everyone is going to come to you for answers to EVERYTHING. Good luck.

this.

edit:
honestly though, for what the OP signed up for (ETL positions at my target started at $55,000~) it's not the worst thing in the world. Say goodbye to your weekends/Holidays though.

My brother worked a few years at Target. The only good thing he had to say about the job were the plushies of the store's mascot, Bullseye.

Is cute though.

wtf most people dont actually work weekends.
and a good job is not 50-60 and working weekends. You people need to change your expectations, our the man is going to walk all over you.

Wow. What was the store?

If you have a good resume or experience - stay the fuck away.

Retail is a meatgrinder meant only for the desperate (those with no other options or intense masochistic tendencies).

To clarify for those unaware, ETL is one of the management positions (usually 3-4 ETLs in a store) in a Target right below the store's general manager (or STL in Target's terms). They are above the TLs (or Supervisors in other retailers).

I've always disliked their terminology from the hierarchy to referring to customers as "guests". Management really hates it when you refer to them as customers.

working salary at the retail level seems like an open invitation for your employer to fuck you hard and good. Especially come holiday season.

Yep. Salary at retail is a giant "AVOID" signal.

I worked at Target years ago. I was just a "Team Member" but I remember hearing Execs make good money but work 60 - 80 hr weeks.

It probably sucks, but I bet you could ride that experience into something better. I knew a guy who did LP at the corporate level for Sports Authority (RIP) and made bank. Not sure what he's doing now that Sports Authority is dead.

glass door is horrible for any retail, and for a lot of places honestly. Think about the people who actually would use something like glass door.

It all would depend on the store itself and the managers. Some stores suck, some are probably great.

The ETL AP guy I worked with was my favorite of my bosses. He spent a lot of time back in electronics with me. Mostly he did security type stuff with the cameras and dealing with shoplifters that they catch red handed and interacting with the police for ones that get away.

The important thing is that you will be an ETL which means that some days you will be the go to boss so in top of your regular job you'll be responsible for closing, sales, morale, red card sign-ups, etc. On the days where you are leader on duty.

I liked Target a lot, but it's still retail and it's really metrics based which sometimes you just get screwed on.
