World of Ruin: Does it ruin FF6?

I suppose if I hadn't had a FAQ open it would have been painful, but as it was I didn't get too lost and enjoyed it. There were parts of it that I could see as annoying, though.

I agree that what the World of Ruin brought to the game was fantastic. However, for me personally, it was a huge turn off in that I had to go re-find all my characters. I thought I was nearing the end the game only to be slapped with another couple hours of play that I believe didn't really need to be part of the game. I know its optional but man, when you've already spent all that time upping your characters, it almost feels forced in that you don't want to put it to waste.

The world was ruin was okay. I liked the search for all the characters and having the little stories of how everyone got on during that time. And I liked that the main character changed over to Celes, who was always awesome (for some reason, I never liked Terra that much--perhaps because she seemed a little too weak in personality).

Anyway, the only thing that really bugged me about the world of Ruin was just that: it was ruined! Too much brown and environmental decay! Last dungeon was just 10x that. Vengeance on Kefka for that was sweet.

I found it vastly inferior to the "live" world. Mind you, I still had a blast.

Then again, I can't stand non-linearity in my RPGs, let alone JRPG. Now that I think of it, it might be the main reason I enjoyed it less.

I don't like it. I didn't like the game very much to begin with, I found it too depressing and dark. World of Ruin was the icing of the cake (a cake full of sad). The non linearity and character fetching... I didn't mind that tough.

Setzer's scenario always made my heart lurch a little.
It was just so well done. The cool ass dungeon. The sad little interludes, as you descend towards the new airship. The mournful as fuck music that plays during that entire sequence.

Edit - And I never even really liked Setzer! But still, what an amazing sequence.

And the emergence. Ooooooooooooh my fucking god the emergence.

Honestly, there is no greater 16-bit epicness.

Oddly enough, FF6 is the game that turned me from linear to non-linear RPGs. I guess that is why I have a lot of good nostalgia for FF6 even though most fans of non-linear RPGs hold it in contempt. Awesome game, and I hope for a good DS remake.

SPOILERSSSSSSSSSS :D

I do really enjoy the very beginning of the WoR. I'm not a fan of "ruined" things in general. It makes me feel uncomfortable. Which I guess is the point.

Hell yes. Once Setzer activates the new (old) airship, and the new, no-long-dreary overworld theme kicks in... goosebumps. There's still a hint of sadness in the new theme, but it verily defines the phrase "new hope."

I agree! Kefka's an asshole :o. And recollecting characters, I don't know, I always enjoyed doing that, even though you technically
don't need to find them all to go to Kefka's tower, you just really need Celes, Edgar (Not Sabin), and Setzer I believe it was, though it'd be hard as hell to pull that one off..I might be a character or so off, don't completely remember

I absolutely loved the world of ruin, and definitely prefer it to the world of balance, though both are pretty much amazing, given that this is my favorite Final Fantasy ever. Though my favorite part definitely has to be the opera scene. Celes and Setzer <3

At this point I can breeze through the world of balance in my sleep, but the world of ruin I sometimes get confused, but it's still awesome.

Definitely the best part of the game. The game starts out awesome enough, but once it opens up in the WoR it becomes the classic that it is known as today. I will suplex all haters.

i'll join you :D

If for no other reason, WoR wins for having some of the most amazing dungeons ever in a JRPG. No other FF has managed to match it, to my unending disappointment!

WoR is amazing storywise. I think it's universally beloved for its emotional impact.

I can see how a certain vocal minority would rag on it for non-linearity, but if they'd rather the sequence was gone altogether they'd neuter the game. The non-linearity and optionality of uniting your friends is what makes it so poignant.

add to the fact that no FF sequels endings have compared to how long and epic FF6's ending was. 30 minutes of closure and satisfaction.

And awesome music!

I remember the World of Ruin surprising me because Square somehow snuck teenage pregnancy past Nintendo's then-strict censors.

:lol that part of the game always had me weirdly entertained..especially beating up Phunbaba.

WOR is the height of creativity in a FF game and since i dun expect SE to ever reach such heights again.... FF6 REMAKE with fleshed-out writings, cut scenes and 5.1 blueray audio!!!

The WoR is awesome, and one of the best game worlds ever created. The event leading up to the WoR is the single greatest moment in all of gaming.

The WoR was non-linearity done right. Every quest was just so well crafted. You were never bogged down by the WRPG fetch quest bullshit. Locations are easy to get to, and none of the quests/puzzles are nearly as cryptic or ambiguous as in many other RPGs/JRPGs (except for Shadow, I suppose).

i had no idea that people exist that doesn't like the world of ruin, total news to me and for the record i may have loved it even more than the beginning.

True that, but I always liked the WoB airship theme better. Really feels like you're flying.

The WOR is probably one of the few times an event in a videogame actually surprised me i really wish we could see something like this again but i highly doubt it is ever going to happen.

Same here.
I thought it was the best part of the game actually.

Actually, you only need
Celes, Edgar, and Setzer
.

I managed to beat it once with just those three. Lots and lots of levelling outside of Doma Castle for me, got them to about Lv 75 or so. Made it all the way up Kefka's Tower, and Setzer was the only one left for me for the very last fight. I barely survived.:lol Definitely a very tense battle when you limit yourself to a few people (but still an awesome fight even if you don't).

I'm half tempted to try that lol. Oh and thanks for the fix, I knew it was one of those two.

Yeah WoR is awesome. I so didn't expect it, I thought the game would be finished, than a whole new game openend up... Actually I always felt that the WoR is the real game, while the first part is more of a prelude to that.

How often in a JRPG does the evil bad guy succeed at his insane plan of destroying the world?

The world of ruin was a stroke of genius.

Except for never remembering how to save Cid, the World of Ruin is a fantastic follow-up to the first part of the game.

You're better off imo. You get the cool cliff jump scene.

I won't say I adored it, but FF6 wouldn't be nearly so good if it didn't have it either.

It was a unique, huge plot twist right after you had searched the world (of balance) for all these champions and kicked the crap out of most everything.

And all of a sudden you're alone struggling to survive against single monsters encounters, building your party up again up to the final dungeon. Fantastic stuff.

Favorite game ever, whee. =p

Exactly, you get together this totally awesome superfriends group of warriors to take on the evil dudes, and you FAIL. Then get to live with the consequences.
