World of Warships Enters Open Beta

I played this a bit last week before going on vacation. Managed to get my brother hooked as planned!

I worked my way up to the Myogi so far. I HATED the Kawachi so much but have been doing okay in the Myogi.

I have had some very good games, and looking forward to working my way through the tiers.

In the Myogi RNGesus was not with me. The Kongo was the first ship that really felt like a BB to me.

You're not alone. The popular consensus is that Kongo is an excellent ship, with Myogi being a bad ship and the Kawachi being even worse. I personally had little issue with the Kawachi and the Myogi, but again I was just giving the popular consensus.

The good news about this arrangement is that once you get used to how one ship performs, you'll most likely just become happier and happier as you go up the tiers. Some of the perceived worst ships in the game (Pensacola, Colorado, Furutaka, etc.) are actually fine ships in their own right, but end up with a terrible reputation because they don't live up to the other ships before and after them in their respective lines.

Matchmaking was slow early morning, rolled my Myoko (T7) and ended up with a TX Yamato and Midway. they rolled over the enemy team. Yamato was two shotting Iowas. Midways cleaned Izumos like it was nothing. I was just setting shit on fire so they could wreck them. It felt lovely

Oh god please let the ocean map disappear somehow. This map is so boring, I always want to leave the game right in the beginning.

80% of the matches are draws, take forever (of course) and nothing happens, because no one got the balls to move into enemy territory. Bah.

That has never happened to me. Never got a draw on this map.

I recently bought the Murmansk, what a great little ship that is!

I finally downloaded this around a week ago. It's fun I really like it, I've been waiting a long time to get my hands on it. Met the devs at pax east back in March which only makes me enjoy it more

I guess since this is the latest thread and no OT yet I'll ask here.

Just started playing the game so I'm new (only been playing 2 days now). Loving it so far and I like the F2P model.

Any way, got my first battleship - the Kawachi. I'm having trouble adapting to battleships, they're quite slow but I love their firepower. I think the Kawachi is terrible though. It has 8.9 km main battery range and the only upgrade I can get adds 0.9 km onto that. My tier III cruiser Tenryu has 11 km... how is this possible? How can a battleship that is slow/cumbersome have such a terrible range, isn't range supposed to be the advantage of a battleship? The slow speed of the Kawachi and it's main battery range of 8.9km just gets me killed the whole damn time. I move slow and I need to get closer to enemies than a damn cruiser to actually engage... I look at the other battleship from the U.S in the same tier and it even has better range.

Basically how do I use the Kawachi? Lol. :/

Well, the Kawachi is not only a bad ship, it also had terrible terrible matchmaking (most of the time I was thrown into T5/T6 matches) for me.

I used it like a shotgun I would say. I drove right into the action, used both sides of the ship (the only real strength it has!) to fire on whatever I saw and tried to get rid of it as fast as possible. :)

Its worth it I would say. Especially the Fuso is an awesome ship!

Yeah the later Japanese BBs look really good which is why I want to stick to the line. I'll try the shotgun approach now as well and see how that works. I had a match where I tried to rather escort/protect carriers from cruisers/destroyers trying to sneak up on them which worked okay. It seems if some players are silly enough to get so close to me it works out just fine lol but the reloading times actually get me killed then. I can't find any advantage to this ship.

What you say about the matchmaking is true, I noticed it. I have been put with people 3 tiers higher than me, In fact I was the only tier 3 in the whole match, most were Tier 5 and 6 with 2-3 Tier 4s. Every single match has been like that but if I go to one of my cruisers the matchmaking is way better. Wonder what's up with that.

Something I read (don't know where anymore though) explained this as the intended behavior for low tier BBs. I stopped grinding US because I hated the Wyoming.

They have to be hard to play to control the amount of people playing them, as a deterrent I would say.

For the Kawachi I did not care for any statistics or results, all I wanted was some hits and points, died, played something else, repeat. :)

You're right in that you pretty much have to play the bad ships in a way where you're happy to get hits and points, but not really care about multi-battle statistics.

It's also true in World of Tanks/Warships thatall of the most powerful or immediately appealing vehicles tend to have some of the worst vehicles in the game as predecessors as, whether deliberate or not, population control. This is why the Maus has the VK 30.01 P before it in the tech tree in World of Tanks, and why the Yamato has the Kawachi, Myogi, and Izumo, among some debated others, along its path and the Iowa has the Colorado and Wyoming. Another good example is the Shimakaze being a ship-destroying monster of a super-destroyer sitting at the end of a gauntlet of poorly-performing ships.

The Fuso has become an absolute beast with this patch. Dayum! I've just done a 6 kill match without doing anything different than normal. And I've one shotted two other BB's after each other that were 70%+ in hp.

Fuso it the top of the IJN BB line before the Yamato. Honestly, I don't see myselft grinding throught the terrible Amagi, Nagato, Izumo just to try Yamato.

Same for Isokaze. tier 4 is the top of the IJN DD line. Minekaze brings nothings. After that its all going south until TX and the grind is unbearable.

IJN Cruiser line is where it's at once you get past the abyssal Furutaka. Aoba is glorious. Myoko is better. Mogami is god tier. Ibuki is okay. Zao is incredible

Well, that settles it. I've unlocked both the mogami and nagato with enough money to buy only one. I knew the mogami was great, so mogami it is.

Nagato is hit and miss for me. Some matches are great with the next one being an absolute disaster with a Omaha burning me down because: RNG.

I will stick to it though, YAMATO!

Anybody here playing high tier JP DDs? I can't justify the pain anymore (currently driving Hatsuharu). Its so much luck involved and the moments a BB gets tunnel vision driving in straight lines for 5 minutes are so rarely, thats not fun.

I find that sometimes while playing this game, the scale of what I'm watching will just hit me.

I also find that this happens most often when I am watching a ship sink, especially mine:

r0jfWvG.jpg

This was late into the sinking, which is why the water is so calm, but the air bubble effect that happens during much of a ship's sinking looks great in my opinion!

I am almost to the Kongo now, the Myogi is okay but the dispersion is really bad on it it seems. Also been playing the Kuma along side it, I think I may enjoy cruisers more. Either the Myogi dispersion is killing the enjoyment or BBs aren't just for me. I know there is a little RNG with BBs in that regards but when I watch other players that aren't in Myogis their dispersion is waaaay better, even my Kawachi was better.

One thing I'd like to also see is maybe increasing the duration of the sinking. I think they sink too fast and it would look cooler and chaotic with sinking ships on the battlefield being more apparent/lasting longer.

A little RNG in BBs? There is a ton of RNG!

It depends on the ship though, I think. Thats how it feels to me at least. The spread of the cannons can be seen in the ship stats. But the fact that full broadsides of my Nagato hitting an Atago, showing me its broadside itself, dealing only about 3k damage can't be explained otherwise. You will get used to it, and Kongo and Fuso are awesome and fun to play.

Some people love the Nagato, too. I'm not one of them, but I manage to get decent games with it from time to time.

An ability for ships to fully capsize when the damage calls for it would also be nice, and maybe list as damage is taken.

I will definitely say that I'm very happy that ships can break into major pieces as they sink, though!

I don't get to play everyday, but when I do manage to get some free time, I always end up coming back to this game. It's so well put together.

Is there a community for it in off-topic? If not, I'd like to make one but I'll need help.

It's just addicting as fuck, damnit. It's worse than War Thunder for me :)
Same, and that's saying a lot... .War Thunder is insanely addictive. :)

Been playing WOWS for a while now and I think I'm going to just focus on a single ship type like cruisers or something. I'm liking that combination of mobility and AA.

Yeah, I play to many different ships, too. I have my Nagato at 80k XP now (55k to go urgh) and unlocked the New Orleans a match ago (and can't afford it, because I buy all the other ships :D)

I'm playing Murmansk now, money maker.

I focused on the Japanese battleship line until I reached the top, and then I branched out and started leveling up the branches more evenly. Now, however, I am back to focusing on a single line again: US aircraft carriers!

Tried searching for new thread, but didn't find anything. So this game had like the most quiet release in the history of games or something? Launch was this past Thursday, and it introduced ranked matches. I have only dabbled a bit and reached rank 20, but I've only had the Cleveland at T6, and it is probably my least favorite cruiser yet (apart from the pre-buff Furutaka).

Anyhow. Just got my Aoba unlocked a few hours ago, and I'm in love. This game is still going strong after 400+ rounds played for me. Suspect it is going to be my go to pick up multiplayer for quite a while.

Edit: You got the damage stat or base xp for that game Rommel? That's absolutely insane.

Ha I saw your post on reddit...

Can't wait for the German cruiser line, training my capt I'm the Tirpitz as we speak.

Anyone want to put up an official thread?

ugh. I hate Japanese battleship players. Playing as the Warspite I singlehandedly drove a Fuso, a New York and a Furutaka out of a cap zone in a Domination map. After about 5-10 minutes of playing whack-a-mole with them as they'd pop out from behind islands, I checked the map only to find that the 2 kongos that were travelling with me at the start of the match were hugging the edge of the map like they'd never see it again.

it was only as I died that one of them had the sense to move in to help.

I always have to rant in chat when a BB player turns away from cruisers incoming... almost every cruiser is a one-shot if he gets close enough, if RNGesus is on your side, of course.

Yesterday I had another great match in the Murmansk with >220 hits multiple kills and confederate. In the end I died and watched a nearly full health Wyoming fighting a not so healthy Omaha... sadly he did not read the chat where I wrote, that he has to turn his ship becaus: TORPEDOES... well, we lost of course :(

btw: will they ever nerf Cleveland fire damage? It's crazy how many fires this ship causes because of the amount of shells flying through the air.

I really love the game, but WTF why don't they stop that border abusing shit. Just make it a solid wall after 10 seconds touching it and no one will ever do it again...

The next patch will address the border huggers. FINALLY!

Update 0.5.1 marks a new round of dealing with the fans of unsporting play by “surfing” on the edges of maps. The targeting system now correctly calculates the trajectory of these “drifters”. However, taking into account their spontaneous and uncommon motion pattern, most players still struggle to hit them. Good news for everyone that plays fair: now if a ship makes a contact with the edge of the map, they will suffer a 75% decrease in engine power. Thus the usual abrupt changing of movement direction when drifting will become impossible. We are keen to hear your feedback on this.

I got the Fletcher some days ago, and I like it a lot. Loosing and sinking is pretty expensive though... Murmansk in heavy use to grind that thing :)

Goddamn, the Russian destroyers are total trash in the low tiers. 3KM torpedos.

I suppose the tier 2 being able to fire 10 of them is nice, but good luck getting close enough to even fire them.

I had some pretty entertaining matches in the Derpzki, but the range is way too low.

Right now I'm using the T4 DD, and it's pretty fun. Hunting other DDs is great, and shooting BBs at max range works kind of, too. Fire seems to be much more likely than in US DDs.

Can't wait to get the higher tier DDs, I love the cannon boat play style!

I played a bit of the closed beta. This one was a missed opportunity. I expected it to have War Thunder style damage effects but it was actually really bland and boring

I hit two different South Carolinas in a game yesterday with it, but they don't seem very useful if you play against people who aren't idiots. Fortunately t2 is a very short tier. Hopefully the guns and speed will be enough to make them playable in mid tiers. I don't have high hopes for the higher tiers though, but that is more of a general problem with DDs.

I have both amazing and incredible bad games in my Fletcher. Things are uncomfortable especially if you have one or (even worse) two carriers in each team. Once they spotted you, you will stay more or less spotted until you die. ;)

I really looked forward to playing the soviet gun boats, but it looks like WG nerfed their detection ranges for release in a way, that invisible firing isn't possible anymore.

http://forum.worldofwarships.eu/ind...03-patchnotes-or-how-russian-dds-are-screwed/

That's a huge bummer and I will stop playing them if this is not a bug.

I'm only at the Farragut, and while I have amazing games in it from time to time, I can't help feeling that I could probably be a better asset to my team if I was using almost any other ship at that tier. I might be negatively biased after I had a 9 game lose streak in it last week though. Worst of all was the game where I sunk 4 enemy ships while my team sunk exactly 0. Also the fact that taking my Minekaze for a ride almost feels like cheating, and that is after the nerf. I really want to love the idea of a gunboat destroyer, but those Japanese torpedo temptresses are hard to resist.

Well,
the grind to the Fletcher was painful in times. I tried to hunt down enemy DDs. This works pretty well, the Hatsuharu is the first JP DD with some decent guns though. Try to catch them with their turrets on the wrong side ;) Later DDs are even better and when they hit it hurts.

For me it's not so much about the result, damage done etc. I play them because I have the most fun in them, and the encounters with other ships at close range can be so thrilling, I love that.

Anyway, my go to have fun DD is the Isokaze. This thing is so op when played in it's (or better lower) tier, it's ridiculous.

The past few days have been absolutely glorious for me. I've had amazing results since I bought the Murmansk. It's so much fun to get into lower tier matches with beginners and pummeling them to death. But also matches with the Fuso and Mogami have left me amazed at the result scree. It's as if my aiming and positioning have improved massively or something. Even crappy games (to me) end up with me getting the highest XP and often 3+ kills.

Also got into a match against iEarlGrey today during his givaway. Got a few hits on him but the match was over before serious damage could be done.

Played the US line up to the South Carolina today. This is pretty much what I wanted Navy Field 2 to be. Exited to see how CVs handle.

Played with my Sims a few rounds.
Damn I like when torpedo range is greater than detection range.
Such a shame no american destroyers are able to do stealth torpedo strikes.
