Worst gaming-related purchase you've ever made

Warhammer Online, after months of anticipation, finally comes. I install it and what I get is an appcrash because bink32.dll (the codec for the intro movies, the logos) is "missing".

The usual .dll fixes didn't work and after days of frustration I end up shelving it along with my extra 2 month prepaid subscription. Talk about disappointment.

I did get it to run eventually and had a blast months later though.

Final Fantasy XIII. Almost sold my ps3 and quit console gaming completely because I found myself playing it despite fucking hating the piece of shit game. Truly felt like an addict.

Probably not the worst purchase, but I really regret buying a Razor Deathadder mouse

I suppose it is affordable but the build quality and general feel of the thing are pretty awful. It's the worst combination of attracting a ton of dust/oil and being totally obnoxious to clean.

Atari Jaguar by far. I only ever had 3 or 4 games for it (even though at the time Alien vs Predator was pretty epic).

Ordering an imported copy of GTA 4, not being patient enough to wait for it, and buying the local version as well. Ended up with two copies of a game I didn't like.

Asking and getting for Christmas...

250USD Turtle Beach headset for 360. It doesn't really work for nextgen consoles and on top of that sound quality is pretty shitty.

The latest in my collection would be the Arkham Origins game on my 3DS. I didn't even want to finish this game.

An older one was Brute Force on Xbox (my friend recommended it before it came out and I got it day 1).... so bad.

Brutal on Sega CD I got pretty early and returned it pretty quickly.

Sonic '06 at launch, The Old Republic CE at launch, eBaying a PS2 at launch for an insane price, importing a Japanese Wii and Brawl to play less than a month early...

Okay I'm depressing myself. I'm done here.

Really? Why? I was actually thinking of getting one.

Well, kind of the same reasons most people have that are unhappy with the platform. It's pretty sad. I love the hardware and there are a few gems on the Vita. In the long run it's just not enough though. Sony basically dropped all the support and the machine is just surviving on Indy stuff and obscure Japanese games. I rather play the Indy stuff on PC and don't really need those other games. Bought the thing early on so it cost me a lot of money. Played a few games on it but in the end it was just not worth it.

It's a tie between:

FFXIII - the only final fantasy game in the series I haven't beaten (I count endgame FFXI for a long time as close enough). I just really disliked it and didn't get far at all.

And Black Ops 2. It's still in the plastic. I don't know why I haven't traded it in tbh... I haven't really liked CoD in years but I let my friends talk me into it in a moment of weakness (and to be fair I've enjoyed the zombie horde mode in world at war and black ops quite a bit so it was mostly for that).

$60 Advent Children import for FFXIII demo
Then $100 FFXIII import

Never again Square. Never again.

Not that I bought it myself but..my dad bought me both a Sega Saturn and a Sega Nomad....

Looking back I know I was a spoiled child and he wasted hundreds because those two systems were never used. I look at them collecting dust (literally) today and realize that I suck.

Also, Spice World for PS1

Definitely is making me second guess picking it up. Thanks.

Only read the first and the current page, but I think I got most people beat.

Superman 64, full price.

And people wonder why I became a game critic.

Turtle Beaches for my 360. I had only heard good things about them, but I realized the truth when I had to buy a special adapter for them to work and had to have like 4 extra cables plugged in.

All in all I probably spent $100 bucks on that headset. Most of the time I just used the Xbox standard one.

The Wii. I loved Metroid Prime 3. I loved Sin & Punishment 2. But holding up the wiimote to aim got so old and tiring real quick.

ITT, people who don't like Nintendo games, but buy Nintendo systems.

I'm surprised there aren't more responses about launch games. That's the only time I've made game purchases I truly regret. You know how it goes, you have a new system and need "something to play on it". You know you should probably stop with the 1 or 2 actually good launch games, but it doesn't seem like enough, so you end up biting the bullet on at least another couple of games that were crapped out for the launch window.

My choices would be Assassin's Creed 3 for Wii U and the 3D version of Street Fighter IV for 3DS. AC3 is garbage on any platform, let alone the mediocre Wii U port. SFIV was an impressive port and I actually liked the touch screen features, but I don't particularly need SF on the go and there's no reason to own this instead of the superior console versions.

Edit: ^ here are your launch game examples.

Rayman Raving Rabbids at Wii launch. Shitty minigames, you have to play single player to unlock them and hardly any are multiplayer anyway. Great party game, Ubisoft.

Then Rayman 3D at 3DS launch, because I'm a fucking idiot I guess. I think Amir0x told me Rayman 2 is a classic so I blame him. :P Atrocious port job--atrocious framerate, glitches everywhere, ghosting, headache-inducing abuse of 3D, missing 3D in cutscenes, missing content, missing lighting, and the game is pretty overrated to start with. By the way, Rayman 2 was also around a decade old when this came out. And then there's the somewhat shady matter of the title and box making no indication it's a port and not a new game.

This is around the time I started to hate Ubisoft.

I felt kind of stupid buying a full-priced 20GB Xbox 360, just to have it discontinued and price cut a week or two later. If I had of just waited, I could have either saved some money or got an Xbox with a bigger HDD, as space is very scarce on my current 360.

Looking back probably Warhammer Online. Bought the boxed copy day 1 for the hell of it and played about 2 hours. Forgot to take my credit card off after the first free month as well so I got charged for another month.

Socom: Combined Assault, literally thought it was such shit that i threw it in the toilet. Little bro went in to use the bathroom later that night and couldn't stop laughing when he found it floating there.

Titanfall at $40 on PC. The community wasn't there when last I played. I doubt it has grown considerably since then.

Quest 64 from a flea market in Toronto, CA

I bought a lifetime subscription to Star Trek Online when it came out, because I didn't want that monthly fee hanging over me. I played for about 3 months, got the ships i wanted, then put it down for a while. Then they went free to play.

Ultima IX. So much enjoyment from the series, so much anticipation, so much disappointment. Nothing today really compares to the half finished steaming piles of junk with pretty cover art that used to litter the shelves.

Rocket is leaving early next year as the game transitions into its release build. He isn't "jumping ship"

And yes, it is truly an alpha as the steam page goes into great care to explain.

Not sure why you put "jumping ship" in quotes when what I said was "abandoning ship". That is exactly what he is doing. He's leaving before it's finished, and moving on to something else before it's done.

Furthermore, if you think there will be a "release build" ready early next year, you are delusional. The game has gone nowhere in the last 6 months. Day Z beta by Q1 of next year would be a miracle.

I took full responsibility for buying something in alpha. I didn't expect a final build game, but I didn't get any fun at all out of it either. I saw the sales numbers and assumed it was going to be fun for me. It wasn't.

What I am saying is, it was a very poor decision that didn't pan out at all, which is what we're discussing in this thread. Had I known Rocket wasn't sticking around to see his vision through to completion, I wouldn't have tossed my support their way so I don't take FULL responsibility for it being a poor purchase, but I'm sure the 8 year old in us who saw the InterAction peripheral really thought it would feel like getting punched in Mortal Kombat too, when we probably should've known better.

Wii. A lot of money for about 15 hours of use.

Oh wait, fuck, it might have to be this. I played RE4 (a game I'd already played on GameCube), brought Wii Sports to one party, and uhh, yeah. Tried Zelda, bored the crap out of me.

Complete waste of money.

Every Nintendo product that came out after 2006's Twilight Princess gamecube edition.

Didn't like the direction Nintendo went, wish I hadn't purchased any of the multiple Wii's I kept buying. Virtual console + Nostalgia beat the hell out of me.

Wii and 3DS. Will never buy a console from Nintendo again.

the Wii. Nintendo should apologize.

Wii, wii u and psp.

Not my bag baby.

I've been very lucky, apart from a handful of games, generally purchased on the cheap, the Wii is the only disappointment and definitely my worst purchase.

I tried games from a variety of genres, but the controller, ultimately, made me play the thing, which I got at launch, for a very limited amount of time. I actually used it as a GameCube for a while.

I'd say my Wii but it was a gift.

Another vote for the Wii. Got tired of Wii Sports in about 40 mins, which is roughly how long it takes to realise how shallow it is. I liked Twilight Princess, and Loved Metroid Prime 3 and Galaxy, but that was about it. 1 console for 3 games

Oh, and I bought a Wii and even Wii Fit fith the f'king board. Both of those are pure dust collectors, but Bf3 was probably worse because I just fucking hated it.
At least I got some use out of the Wii with Wii Smash and Wii Mario Kart.

a wii and 3ds then just yesterday

I'd have to go with the Wii. Ended up being mostly used for the virtual console.

After giving it a lot of thought, the Wii.

There were some games I loved but I didn't have inbetween games. I either loved them or hated them. The amount of games I loved was 4 or less.

The hardware was really bad.

I have to go with the Wii. It was "cute" for a few days, but it quickly started collecting dust and I ended up just putting it away in the closet. I found that even with parties that the Wii just wasn't that popular. Serves me right for listening to the hype heh.

This... but I did buy a launch model and was able to turn it around quick for about the price of a new PS3, which then became one of the best gaming-related decisions/purchases I've ever made. Always look on the bright side!

Same. I've tried playing some of the critically acclaimed games, but the waggling thing just ruins my enjoyment of most of them.

After only a few months - and while still hard to find - mine stayed in a box in my closet for 9 months, only leaving because my family wanted me to bring it when I visited on vacation.

Yea, Wii.

Wii - got caught up in the hype, sold it after a few months.

Haven't even touched my Wii in two years.

The Wii. I loved Metroid Prime 3. I loved Sin & Punishment 2. But holding up the wiimote to aim got so old and tiring real quick.

Wii at launch to get Zelda 2 weeks early.

I'm one of those that's gone back and forth on picking up a Wii for 5 games I may not like. Guess I should keep thinking about it lol.

I waited until February to buy Battlefield 4, but it still seemed pretty crappy to me.

Also, Matrix Online was fun for a little bit, but I held onto that subscription for longer than I should have.

Wii has good games that are worth playing.

For ppl who said the 3ds, I can't even... 3DS is amazing with an amazing library.

In 93 yah this would suck, but today? These are the easiest way to get into amiga gaming today. No need to deal with dying floppies anymore. It's a snap to convert a floppy game to a booting cd, or if you can't do that, you can find isos ful of hundreds of amiga 500/1200 games. Plus the actual cd32 ports usually have better controls (4+ buttons!) Or extra stages (zool 2).

I have an sx-32 inside mine with mb ram to expand it to a full a1200, then I have a cf kit installed that boots into classic workbench.

Not nostalgia talking, I got my cd32 maybe 3 years ago. Easily my favorite commodore product, and I say this as a fan of virtually everything they made.

Yeah, considering the arse that is Amiga emulation you've got a point. But at the time I wanted a PlayStation :D
