Worst JRPG you have ever played.

White Knight Chronicles, couldn't handle that game. I made it about 5 hours in before I put it back in the case and never played it again.

I had a blast with this one. What I'd give for a new Takahashi game that had a story as meaty as Xenosaga.

It's true. I remember thinking while playing Xenosaga that it couldn't really stand up to Xenogears, but now looking back the story and scope of Xenosaga is pretty amazing on it's own.

I actually don't find the game to be terrible. It's certainly not good, but the hate heaped upon it feels excessive. The game feels like a relic of the 16-bit era and something that probably should have shown up on the Sega CD or some such, not the PS1 where expectations were very next gen focused at the time with people salivating over Final Fantasy VII, Grandia, and the like.

Beyond the Beyond came out in 96, was one of the first JRPGs to come out in the US for the PS1. Nobody cared about FFVII at the time

Of the ones I've played, hands down

Just an insufferable mess. As much as I'd want to say XIII, at least stuff happened in that game. XII was just a repetitive let down pretending to be way more grand and epic than it actually is. I've had a more engaging time at the wait lobby in the DMV.

Best logo at least.

I cannot understand the hate for FF 13. The game itself isn't bad. What's bad about it?

And you are probably comparing it to past titles too. As a stand alone jrpg it's perfectly serviceable.

With that said worst for me would go to evolution for the dreamcast

I absolutely hated the story and every single character. Probably my all time worst cast outside of Star Ocean 4.

FFX for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are worse games out there, but I don't exactly play every JRPG under the sun.
I really didn't like any of the characters in FFX (aside from Rikku) and the plot I didn't much care for. The voice acting was also absolutely god awful. I remember playing it as a kid back in the day, getting to that scene where Tidus and what's her face are laughing, and just immediately wanting to turn it off.

Persona 3 & 4(coming from persona 2 to this is hurting my soul.T_T while I know this series had many fans, till now I still feel that these two titles is one of my hated title here. And I am SMT huge fan who had played almost all SMT games.)

Ni no Kuni (everything is nice and dandy until the battle system. It is slow and simply not fun to play sadly. One of the jrpg I bought and never finished till now.)

White Knight Chronicle( so boring. T_T the battle is so slow and the movements is stiff. It is just not fun.)

Disgaea series (Too much grinding for my taste. After one, I never even bother to try the others anymore.y

Never feel the problem with Lunar Dragon Song lol. Or maybe I am still young that time/no taste? But I finish the whole game and loved the game for what it is lol.

I'll add my vote for Enchanted Arms on the X360. There's been a number of JRPGs that just make me go "meh" but man did this one leave such a sour taste in my mouth. It was a Gamefly rental though, so I just sent it right back after giving it a weekend.

Quest 64 for me.

Runner up: Grandia III. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned more in this thread. Great battle system, but the rest of the game was so bad that I called it quits after about a third of the way through. Even Grandia Xtreme is far better (I actually think it's pretty solid).

Final Fantasy XIII for me. Literally everything but its graphics and musics are horrendous. Yes, I even played FFII and Mystic Quest and had more fun with them.

To be fair, I haven't the chance to play the infamous Quest 64.

I will have to comment the OP for his extensive arguments and not making a name calling thread... oh wait...

Breath of Fire V. I just remembered paying $50 for it day 1, playing it, getting bored and confused, hated the art style and just how divided it was of the previous games which I played through and loved.

It was ugly. It was weird. It was different. But I want to give it another chance one day. I owe it to the series to play the finale.

I'm the only one who really wants to play some of this games now?
Curious to see if some of then are really this bad

Specially Unlimited Saga

Hmm probably Quest 64. Yeah, that one definitely takes the cake. A friend of mine sold it to me back when we were younger... I don't know why I'm still friends with him. D:

Posts like this hurt my soul. I like all of these except Disgaea. I'd guess it's most likely a difference in defining worst though. A good chunk of people here seem to define worst as least liked. While I'd define worst as most broken. I like a lot of bad games and can't get into many SRPG's becuase most of those mechanics make me far to OCD and burn me out quickly but I wouldn't call Disgaea the worst game I've played it's just not for me.

Worst game I've played would probably be Evergrace. I even kind of like Ephemeral Phantasia. The time of day mechanic was pretty good. the battle system was very blah, but the music part I liked even though I really suck at it or is that cause it's bad same difference.

I also love Drakengard despite the fact that I have never quite fully beaten it cause I can't win the freaking rythm game thrown in out of nowhere at the end.

You're probably thinking of The Granstream Saga.
I really like it, though. :\

I briefly remember this game, I think my friend from high school brought it over. Do you think it's still worth looking into?

Also this. It was so frustrating because I wanted to like it so bad and it seemed to have such potential. But it was just so bland and annoying I couldn't finish it.
Ugh, don't remind me. The Wild Arms series had such awesome potential, and totally squandered it.

Final Fantasy VII. It wasn't horrible, just terribly average and incredibly overrated in every single regard.

I love JRPGs, but I'm very selective, so it makes sense I wouldn't have played a worst one as I usually pick beloved games.

Hyperbolically dragging VII down to compensate for its popularity is so 1998.

Worst JRPG I've played? Without a down, hands down, MUST be Persona 4 Golden!

...

... of course it's also the ONLY JRPG I've ever played, so by default that makes it both the best and worst JRPG I've ever played :D

Luv that P4G!

Huh. I remember enjoying Holy Magic Century, as we called it down under. To be fair, I haven't played it in some 15 years, so, ya know.

My vote goes to FFXIII, mainly because it ended my love affair with JRPGs. After that game, I just couldn't bare to play them any more. I haven't gone back to the classics yet, I'm hoping they'll repair the damage so I can dare to look forward to FFXV.

Is Dragon's Dogma a JRPG? Or is it considered a WRPG? Because if it's the former I'd have to say that's it.

If no... If not, I'd have to go with FF: Echoes of Time for the DS.

Do any mobile games count?

There's something called Gods Wars that is atrocious that I once downloaded. No hyperbole when I say it has the worse translations I've ever seen. So bad I don't even understand what they're saying. It looks like a JRPG but I'm not exactly sure if it is one.

You can get it here for free if your heart desires.

Star Ocean 4. Best combat. Horrible, terrible, wrongly indelible characters, plot, pacing, voice acting. Unless it's intentional in that meta sort. Then it's the greatest. Still won't touch it again.

BOFV
Unlimited SaGa
I don't even know what that was except for a waste of money

Don't do it

Yeah. Really bad pacing. Any game that goes off the wrong track is bad but this game does it the worst.

Yes I beat it. So I guess that's one bad RPG I played to the end. But as a PS2 game, it wasn't bad. Looking back, it is though.

Morbid curiosity caused me to try Hoshi wo Miru Hito which may be the undisputed worst RPG of all time. The game can't even display your HP counter in battle right! Hideously-drawn graphics, terrible balance, absolutely aimless direction, when you exit a town you teleport to a random spot on the world map... it's the RPG equivalent of Big Rigs in terms of how broken it is.

Watch Chrontendo ep 23 at 1h10m30s to see the madness.

Jeeeeeeeeeez.

I never even knew JRPGs could be that bad.

SaGa Frontier on the PS1. I don't remember much about it, I just remember being hugely disappointed in it and returning it for a refund.

Like I said, it wasn't that it was bad, I just don't have a habit of playing games that aren't already well regarded in the gaming community (I'm always a couple of years late to everything anyway because it makes more sense to me). It just wasn't nearly as great as promised in any regard. I've played FF X, VI, XII, IV, VII, IX and V (in that order)... It's not like I'm a FF hater or anything, I just expected alot more, the game is so average it hurts. It felt older and less inventive than IV, V and VI (seriously, what the fuck happened?), the story sucked (as with 99% of videogames), the gameplay was a bore (the oh-so-loved materia system destroyed the characters and made them all the same, hooray) and it looked like pure undigested ass (I really don't get those early 3D days... even at the time I thought everything looked absolutely hideous). Soundtrack was good, though.

I thank god it was as successful as it was because it launched JRPGs onto the mainstream and caused alot of gems to be born, but I just don't get what the craze is about. It's not terrible, at all, it's actually quite acceptable... but it's completely unremarkable (unless you played it at the time and it was one of your first JRPGs).

I don't have a habit of playing bad games, wise ass. Oo

Average/not bad is the worse I've tasted, JRPG-wise. Does that make me lucky?

I've "played" one that was worse (ff8), but I didn't even last 3 hours so I can't exactly say I played it, can I?

I never knew how much hate Quest 64 got until I started seeing "Worst RPG you've played" threads. I bought it back when it first came out because I wanted a new game and I saw RPG elements in the back of the box. At the time I had only really played Super Mario RPG and I believe FF7 so I wanted to see what else was out there for this genre.

I enjoyed it. Granted the game has a TON of flaws, it's difficult as hell, and I still have no idea what the story is, but I replay it every few years when I get an N64 craving. It's probably nostalgia talking though.

Also to all of you Blue Dragon haters:

GET HYPE!

Orphen: Scion of Sorcery. Bought it for $2 at GameStop at the tail end of the system's life cycle, played it for an hour and a half, then just tossed it in my closet. I could get past the graphics, but that was one of the worst battle systems I've ever played. Ever. Complete and utter crap.

Now, for bad RPGs that I still enjoy...
