Worst offenders of bullshots(false advertisement)?

From the examples I can think of, this isn't really a problem anymore is it? There are laws against false advertising. Edit: maybe not in the US because, freedom.

There's not a lot wrong with "target renders" and high res images of games very early on in development. The problem is probably the way we hype/attack games years in advance.

I still cant believe MS had the balls to show that concept, obviously for internal use only Kinect reveal video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9NWS_f96gI

Some of that stuff is simply science fiction. Absolutely not possible.

Almost all of it has been done one way or another in kinect1 games. The only things where it could not have been precise enough was gear switching in the racing game, and maybe the buzzer gesture for the quiz (although you could "cheat" your way through simple motion detection)

Rockstar get a pass for being Rockstar, but GTAV was marketed with a full suite of bullshots and bulltrailers that, IMO, fell further short from the final product than Watch Dogs did.

What?

This looks exactly the same as the final game. The only bullshot part is the speed of the character switching. All the screenshots were definitely from the console version of the game but they just happened to have perfect lighting from the time of day and angles that only developers can use. I don't know how you can even compare it with Watch Dogs.

Lol no. GTAV was not downgraded. I remember how 80 percent of the people in that gameplay reveal thread were so sure of themselves that footage was bullshot or pc version, and the final game turned out like that. I'm still gobsmacked how great GTAV looks on PS3. Watch Dogs looks like a completely different game.

So in short, Ubisoft: the thread?

Dark Souls 2's downgrades were disappointing to me, but less so than the more linear approach to the levels.

Mission Impossible (N64)

Haha, I remember that one.

I remember Unreal Tournament 3 claiming the in-game graphics and models looked this good.
0000003794.1920x1080.jpg

The game didn't look that good (graphically) in-game.

Like the Gears of War promotional screenshots, This seems to be a habit of Epic Games.

Now, I can't actually vouch for the authenticity of this claim - maybe if someone here is in printing, they can shed some light on it - but when I expressed concern that we had a high-resolution screenshot outputter for a game I was working on, I was told that print media needed higher-than-real resolution screens to look 'about right' on the final printed page.

I was sceptical at the time but I know very little about printing, so it might be true for all I know.

Really?

Really.
Ok, that wasn't technically an Xbox game (I chose that example because it was so similar to the proof of concept), but you can consider instead the augmented reality part of Kinect Party, which is technically the same thing.
In that specific case, the only detail in the video was the "grabbing" gesture, which wasn't supported by kinect1. But that's nitpicking (there are other ways to select an item in a menu through gesture), and it is supported by kinect2 anyway (and the first demos were done with kinect1), so it's hardly "science fiction".

HAHA!!! Looks real good ;p love the idea, but come on how did that get into shops? Although the fact it detected that the person was facing away/backwards is pretty impressive :) But overall no, its a bullshot...

Kinect is a cheap 3D camera with a powerful SDK behind it, so it's not strange that it ends up in all kinds of places. Kinect 1 is used in research, helping children, shops, etc. Expect the same with Kinect 2 when that's released for PC.

Sure there where no games that used Kinect in all the ways it was displayed in the original reveal trailer. However Kinect itself is capable of all that, as proven by games and the countless of uses outside of the gaming industry.
You played it already? How is it?

I've heard this before as well. It might have been here on GAF someone said publishers send out media kits with different screenshots for print and digital but some websites just put everything up online. It made some sense for Skyward Sword because the screens that were being released were a mix of actual resolution and higher resolution shots. It doesn't really explain why some games only have higher res screenshots though.

You do realise where you're posting dude? That "easy nerds there just video games" shit won't fly around here.

The ''you played it already?'' comments shouldn't fly here either but they do thanks to people who get overly attached to products that aren't even out yet.

Given the media that's out, there is certainly room for concern wether this lives up to the hype especially given the size of the team / resources and stuff yet for some reason it's taboo around these parts to critize anything.

How can you post a game that's not out yet though? We don't even know what the final product will look like. It's clear baiting and it's surprising you'd defend it.

then lets post pictures of every game still in development. great reasoning.

aw yiss

I guess this is the motion-control equivalent of a bullshot, right

I still almost can't believe they did this. Of all of the Kinect nonsense in the past few years, this is the low point.

Jason Schreier could write up an awesome behind the scenes story about this- who was responsible, how did they think this was a good idea, where are they now, etc.

this is why we can't have nice things Junior.. this is a bullshot thread. until NMS is out just drink the koolaid.

Dude the game is still in development.. will it live up to the promises? who knows but I am sure it will look like that. This is a thread about graphics and pre/post release.

How is it taboo around these parts to criticize anything when this entire thread is about criticizing developers and publishers for lying to consumers? The difference is, until a game is released we can't conclusively criticize pre-exposed media because we have no final product to compare it to. Pretty simple don't you think?

I disagree. Kinect (the first one, because the one introduced with Xbox One is much more advanced) isn't precise enough and has some lag so sure, things shown in this video wouldn't work as good. But other than that - it's not science fiction, everything shown here is available today. What is shown in the video is basically skeleton tracking, gesture recognition, voice recognition and augmented reality. Even the virtual dressing room app - IMHO the most advanced thing that was shown there - is possible with Kinect (the first one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jbvnk1T4vQ

(You can find more videos with other virtual dressing room applications developed with Kinect/Kinect SDK on YouTube - some of them are even already available in some clothing shops - but this one I find most advanced looking)

Of course, 1:1 skeleton tracking in games, while cool looking in videos, would be impossible (or rather very impractical) to do because, let's be honest, playing games where the character on screen maps exactly what you do in real life would require a lot of motor skill from the player. As a player - would you be able to kick someone in the face or do a jump forward in your living room so that your character on screen could perform those moves?

It's true.

Printed matter usually gets put together at 300 dpi. At native resolution, a 900p game would be maybe 3" tall, and previous-gen games would be even smaller.

Like with a fixed-resolution screen, the closer you can get to native res, the better. So, you render based on the largest needed representation, and then let your publishing application scale the image down for smaller photo boxes.

Oh, yes! The Junior remark! Don't I love it when reasoning boils down to number of posts.

I like you :)

GTA V doesn't look exactly like the trailers, the PS3/360 can't handle that level of lighting (the real game has that trademark last-gen "flat" look), shadowing, and ambient occlusion. But saying it's anywhere close to the visual downgrade Watch_Dogs recieved is also ridiculous.

GTA V looks really good on current gen consoles though. I didn't feel tricked after seeing the bull shots and buying the game if anything I was even more amazed by how good it looked on 8 year old last gen tech.

it should be a crime to lie like this. The more informed and outspoken we are as gamers the less companies will get away with stuff like this. My mind is still blown about how UBISOFT deceived the people with that watchdogs E3 2013 footage only to turn around and put out some BS. I am waiting before I pick up the division and I hope everyone else does too.

Not a valid point because it's the same for every other game, the engine can handle it but ultimately what matters is how the game was when it released.

it's a valid point on PC because it depends on variable hardware. crysis did look like that when it was released, when run on very high-end hardware with the correct settings.

My point was only that 3 Titans would be more than enough and that it's possible with the engine. I know they released the game with very bland looking lighting and colors.
