Would a 2.5D Sonic using the Unleashed engine make you guys happy?

Really I think that Sonic Unleashed was a test for this new team more than anything else. The day levels were to get down the speed portion, and the night levels to get down the platforming. And why force in the Werehog? I think instead of using an established character like Knuckles who would have generated far less controversy, they want to move the series towards being purely focused on Sonic. So the only playable character is Sonic, he just comes in two forms.

So with that, the next mainline game is going to be a compromise of the blinding speed and platforming puzzles, and really that's what they should be doing.

they should also bring back the Chao Garden

I haven't enjoyed a single 3D sonic game.

Somewhere along the line, Sega felt that solid gameplay and good platforming where less important than speed...which is a shame...because while speed is what drew many to first try out the Sonic games; the skillfull platforming, multi-path level designs*, and gameplay where what kept people coming back for more.

*Hitting a QTE to reach a new platform doesn't quite compare

Sonic Unleashed does look a very pretty 3D title - not quite the Sonic I always enjoyed but it's still vibrant and polished. And those videos do look quite good.

As much as I would think making a 2.5D Sonic game using the Unleashed engine makes sense, in the end it's still Sonic Team that are the trouble. They would inevitably find some way to fumble it up via clumsy physics or new characters or a plot forced down your gullet which nobody has any right to care about. I enjoyed Sonic Rush as much as any sane man or woman, but it's still got some fallible design problems and it still has a plot with characters who try to make an epic out of a bunch of furry multicoloured animals.

I would suggest to give the task of a 2.5D Sonic game using Unleashed's engine to an entirely independent team to work on, but I get the feeling Sonic Team would be far too protective of the franchise to let anyone walk over what they've tried to create over the years.

I agree completely.

i just dont know why the fuck they have to have sonic in the 'real world'. fuck the story just give us a grass/green level, a factory level, a lava level, ice level etc.

You do know the Sonic Team who worked on Sonic Unleashed was an entirely new Sonic Team, right? The previous Sonic Team, called Sonic Team USA, has been disbanded. This was a new team.

Additionally, Sonic Rush's level design was made by Dimps, who also did the level design for the noticeably inferior Wii version of Sonic Unleashed.

And you must not be familiar with the history of Sonic the Hedgehog if you think that all Sonic games have been developed by Sonic Team. Sega lets more people touch the Sonic series than just about any other company would let their mascot-franchise be touched.

Well we still got some of the level cliches in Unleashed.

Arid Sands - desert level
Cool Edge - snow/ice level
Skyscraper Scamper/Rooftop Run/Windmill Isle - city level
Savannah Citadel - forest level
Jungle Joyride - jungle level
Eggmanland - final fortress level

Dragon Road was the only one that was firmly placed in a real location.

It's not a new team. Sega Studios USA hasn't done a Sonic game since Shadow, and the last game they did before disbanding was NiGHTS. The Unleashed team was regular Sonic Team, ostensibly the same team behind Sonic 2k6.

There have been 2 Sonic teams for a while now. Sonic Team USA, which has disbanded, and Sonic Team (japan). Sonic Team USA has been disbanded, they handled all Sonic games before Sonic 2006.

Sonic 2006 was handled by Sonic Team (japan). After Sonic 2006, Sonic team (japan) was gutted, and a new crew was brought in. The current Sonic Team (japan) is not the same Sonic Team (japan) which made 2006.

But as you said, it was gutted, and new talent was brought in. It is important to keep this in mind.

BTW, this is off-topic, but when did Sega VE Animation get founded. Was it really last year?

You know what would make me happy?

A good Sonic game.

I don't care how many dimensions, I don't care who does it.

I just want it to be good.

I think a remake of Sonic 1 (Sonic 2 is better, but whatever) in that engine on PSN/XBLA for about $20 would be insanely awesome, and it'd be massive numbers.

I've said the same thing in pretty much EVERY Sonic thread.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are excellent games. Especially 1.

The Sonic hate started with the Shadow game I think, and then Sonic 2006 turned out to be the most rushed, worst Sonic game of all time.

Haven't played Unleashed, but it's not like it's impossible to have a great Sonic game in 3d. We have two of them, but that was ten years ago.

It sucks because of the same reasons all post-Genesis 2D Sonic did.

It's too fast without a tight enough control and focused like it was a racing game or something. It lacks platforming intricacies, that's the problem. The game doesn't feel like a platformer at heart.
